Night Visions was inspired by the night sky of Ada, Ohio. With very little light pollution, a step into the cool night atmosphere reveals the huge open sky. The piece depicts night falling, and as you step outside and watch the sky, you see the colorful sunset fade away and twinkling stars start to pop up from the darkness. They appear one-by-one, and as more and more collect in the sky they turn from several singularities into constellations, becoming the night visions formed in the cosmos.

For musicians, this piece is short, easy to setup, exciting for the crowd, a bit of a workout, fun to play and a challenge.My aim for this piece was to emulate the concept of ‘seeing sounds’ by only creating sound in the light. It was a challenge to get the lighting effect that provided us with a sharp difference between light and dark.Because it is such a physical piece, I would encourage the performers to add in choreography and to exercise the power of choice in terms of sticking (‘handings’ and ‘footings’) and the choice between standing and sitting. The performers may also experiment with visual mediums like talcum powder and other sound choices like using toy hammers instead of hands and choosing extremely thick shoes.

Paul Williams's beloved tune from the Jim Henson Company's timeless Christmas special Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas is now available as an arrangement for percussion ensemble!Originally performed in December 2019 by the University of Iowa School of Music's percussion studio, under the direction of Dr. Dan Moore, this lively, jazzy arrangement was lovingly crafted by Iowa Percussion's own Jilly Cooke, a music education major who was a junior at the time of this arrangement's premiere. As a lifelong fan of the Muppets (and a promising aspiring puppeteer herself), Cooke cleverly weaves in numerous references to various tunes and styles that have influenced her musical preferences and career (with notes in the score to bring out these musical quotes). The inspiration for the piece comes from Latin American folklore “mal de ojo†which is essentially staring or looking on someone with envy or praising them without touching them. This is the goal of the piece; to keep the audience engaged throughout the work with quick passages, rhythmic variety, and timbre changes, giving the performers ojo because there is no other option but to watch and listen intently.

The COVID Awakening is a marimba quartet for two 5.0 octave instruments. This piece is inspired by minimalism and minimalist compositional techniques combined with layering found in West African drumming, though it is not the only source of this specific technique. It was written during the beginning of the summer of 2020, when the Coronavirus, COVID-19, had started its grips on the United States in the forms of illness, death, and economic and emotional distress. This piece reflects on these early feelings of quarantines and sheltering in place, and using the techniques listed above the listeners are pulled in to listen between the notes. These reflections are found not in the music itself, but is different with every listen. The listeners’ ears will venture as they wish, and make this piece new with every performance, even though the notes and rhythms never change. Instrumentation: Two 5.0 octave marimbas, though only one marimba needs to be the full range. Marimba 1 can be a much smaller instrument if necessary. I’d suggest using rubber/latex mallets. Unless the performance is in a reasonably dry hall, this articulation and tone benefit does wonders for this piece. Each player needs only 2 mallets.

They still worked together - and built this song in a tiny warehouse using whatever technology they could get their hands on. In a day where most music was produced in the large studios backed by industry money - they pioneered a hit without the big studio. Securing a loan, they procured essential equipment—a compact setup comprising an 8-track tape recorder, mixer, effects processors, synthesizers, a drum computer, and a compact dynamic microphone. Some of the emotions from their lives went into the song - a fresh start on the heels of emotional events. Reflecting on that period, Lennox candidly remarked, “I was feeling very vulnerable. The song was an expression of how I felt: hopeless and nihilistic.â€This version is not a cover. Fragments of musical elements are translated into the ensemble. While occasionally exhibiting moments of dance, the composition evolves into a more profound expression, capitalizing on the musical possibilities of a percussion ensemble. (For this piece, both score and parts are included in a single PDF file.)This quietly beautiful music began as a simple piano piece in memory of the composer’s late wife. Because her ‘English’ name, Sansan, sounds like the number 33 in Mandarin Chinese, the piece is based on the numbers 3, 33 and various multiples of them. The numbers were used to shape all aspects of the music, but in performance the piece still flows simply and naturally. It is technically not difficult for performers, but they do need good ears for color and balance, and they must work carefully as an ensemble.
