Paul Williams's beloved tune from the Jim Henson Company's timeless Christmas special Emmet Otter's Jug-Band Christmas is now available as an arrangement for percussion ensemble!Originally performed in December 2019 by the University of Iowa School of Music's percussion studio, under the direction of Dr. Dan Moore, this lively, jazzy arrangement was lovingly crafted by Iowa Percussion's own Jilly Cooke, a music education major who was a junior at the time of this arrangement's premiere. As a lifelong fan of the Muppets (and a promising aspiring puppeteer herself), Cooke cleverly weaves in numerous references to various tunes and styles that have influenced her musical preferences and career (with notes in the score to bring out these musical quotes). Beginning with a faithful adaptation of the original gospel-waltz ballad feel from the TV special, the arrangement swiftly transitions into a toe-tapping, New Orleans-style second-line groove with a solo section and a witty trade-off section in the middle.Instrumentation of 8 players includes: Vibraphone 1 (preferably includes E3), Vibraphone 2, Marimba 1/Accordion (optional use of amplified Melodica), Marimba 2 (preferably includes F2), Bass Marimba (premiere performance used Bass MalletKAT, optional use of Bass Guitar and/or Keyboard Patch), Piano, Drum Set, and Auxiliary Percussion (includes Mark Tree, Suspended Cymbal, Triangle, and important gospel-style Tambourine).

The starting point of the composition was: film music. Inspired by well-known works by Hans Zimmer, Brian Tyler, John Williams and works by De Efteling. The composition starts in a fairly small composition in which, with the help of crescendos and several instruments, it works towards a strong, but above all open and cheerful part. This is followed by a short untuned percussion solo. After this, theme A is closed in a calm, non-violent manner. Immediately theme B comes in which is built up through crescendos and multiple instruments over time. Theme B also comes to a quiet end afterwards. After this theme A and B return at the same time, which builds up and closes in a grandiose way.NL:Deze compositie is geschreven voor één van de onderdelen van het D examen van Frits Renting. This piece is ideally suited for the Marimba Workshop (Pty) Ltd marimbas.www.marimbaworkshop.co.za  It was arranged for the Goede Hoop Marimba Band to be performed at the 2016 Education Africa International Marimba & Steelpan Festival in the Strictly Classical Category where the composer for this category for that year was Antonio Vivaldi. This performance has gone viral on YouTube. These young girls were aged between 11 and 13 at the time. It is written for African diatonic marimbas in C with an African feel but can be played on a variety of different instruments. Feel free to roll (measured or unmeasured) on the long notes.Whenever I teach this arrangement my students fall in love with Vivaldi and his music. The medley consists of music from Vivaldi's Four Seasons: Spring and Winter and his famous Gloria. Premiered at Colorado State University, October 16, 2016.It is common knowledge that the universe we see is composed of tiny particles known as atoms. For much of scientific history, it was thought that atoms were made up of three indivisible particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.Thanks to contemporary advances in physics, we now know that these particles are, in fact, made up of much smaller particles and that these constituents sometimes behave in ways that confound what we thought we knew of the physical universe.In this piece, I have portrayed one type of these subatomic particles, the quark. There are six types (or flavors) of quark: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. These are differentiated by the type of charge they carry and their masses.The first movement is Strange Quark. This flavor has a negative charge and is relatively light. Much like the particle, this movement often behaves in unusual ways.Top Quark, the second movement, portrays the quark flavor that is by far the heaviest. Slow and massive, this particle allowed for the study of the famous Higgs boson.The final movement, Up Quark, is light and decays quickly, much like this particle that contributes to both protons and neutrons.The universe is indeed a wonder to behold and its scale is hardly comprehensible to the human mind. And yet, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there exists an entire universe yet to uncover in the most infinitesimal pieces of matter. It is my hope that the wonder and mystery this inspires be conveyed through this piece of music.

Stardust Inferno is a soca written for a steel band with the following instrumentation: Lead (Low C), Double Tenor, Double Seconds, Cello, Bass, and Drum Set. The motives found in this were written on a lead pan first, and then added variations and a solo section. The bass voices have a time to shine with their own melody, the double tenor and double seconds add harmony, and the drum set has group hits written in, rather than having a repeated pattern with slash notation on top. This was a fun piece to write, and is one of my favorites in my works for pan!
