Advanced Intermediate level.Commissioned by Chris Nadeau for CAn-Duo. Premiered at Colorado State University, October 16, 2016.It is common knowledge that the universe we see is composed of tiny particles known as atoms. For much of scientific history, it was thought that atoms were made up of three indivisible particles: protons, neutrons, and electrons.Thanks to contemporary advances in physics, we now know that these particles are, in fact, made up of much smaller particles and that these constituents sometimes behave in ways that confound what we thought we knew of the physical universe.In this piece, I have portrayed one type of these subatomic particles, the quark. There are six types (or flavors) of quark: up, down, charm, strange, top, and bottom. These are differentiated by the type of charge they carry and their masses.The first movement is Strange Quark. This flavor has a negative charge and is relatively light. Much like the particle, this movement often behaves in unusual ways.Top Quark, the second movement, portrays the quark flavor that is by far the heaviest. Slow and massive, this particle allowed for the study of the famous Higgs boson.The final movement, Up Quark, is light and decays quickly, much like this particle that contributes to both protons and neutrons.The universe is indeed a wonder to behold and its scale is hardly comprehensible to the human mind. And yet, it is becoming increasingly apparent that there exists an entire universe yet to uncover in the most infinitesimal pieces of matter. It is my hope that the wonder and mystery this inspires be conveyed through this piece of music.

This piece is ideally suited for the Marimba Workshop (Pty) Ltd marimbas.www.marimbaworkshop.co.za  It was arranged for the Goede Hoop Marimba Band to be performed at the 2016 Education Africa International Marimba & Steelpan Festival in the Strictly Classical Category where the composer for this category for that year was Antonio Vivaldi. This performance has gone viral on YouTube. These young girls were aged between 11 and 13 at the time. It is written for African diatonic marimbas in C with an African feel but can be played on a variety of different instruments. Feel free to roll (measured or unmeasured) on the long notes.Whenever I teach this arrangement my students fall in love with Vivaldi and his music. The medley consists of music from Vivaldi's Four Seasons: Spring and Winter and his famous Gloria. The COVID Awakening is a marimba quartet for two 5.0 octave instruments. This piece is inspired by minimalism and minimalist compositional techniques combined with layering found in West African drumming, though it is not the only source of this specific technique. It was written during the beginning of the summer of 2020, when the Coronavirus, COVID-19, had started its grips on the United States in the forms of illness, death, and economic and emotional distress. This piece reflects on these early feelings of quarantines and sheltering in place, and using the techniques listed above the listeners are pulled in to listen between the notes. These reflections are found not in the music itself, but is different with every listen. The listeners’ ears will venture as they wish, and make this piece new with every performance, even though the notes and rhythms never change. Instrumentation: Two 5.0 octave marimbas, though only one marimba needs to be the full range. Marimba 1 can be a much smaller instrument if necessary. I’d suggest using rubber/latex mallets. Unless the performance is in a reasonably dry hall, this articulation and tone benefit does wonders for this piece. Each player needs only 2 mallets.

Written for the FCIP Senior percussion ensemble 2021, this piece for 12 players draws inspiration from the many cultures that surround the Straits of Gibraltar. The fusion of ethnicities and trade that surround one stretch of water inspires images of belly dancing in a middle eastern bazaar, staring at the ocean from the coast and travelling into the wonders of the desert. Straits of Gibraltar is for Intermediate/Advanced percussion ensembles with access to 2x4.3 Octave Marimbas, 2x Vibraphones, Xylophone, Glockenspiel/Bells, Timpani, Concert toms, Darbuka or Djembe, Drum Set and Auxiliary Percussion.
