This work may be performed by instruments only; the percussion part being performed by one, two, or three performers.If a mime performer, or one or more dancers, also perform, the instrumental ensemble must be on the stage with them. The mime or dancer(s) enter the stage at measure 20 and either 1) perform until the end (m. 91), or 2) perform from m. 20 to m. 41, then leave the stage, and then return at m. 67. Costumes: the instrumentalists may be in costume as well as the performers, if desired. See the title page for suggestions. This piece is meant to be energetic, theatrical, and fun to perform as well as to watch.Program Note Dance of the Wind-Up Toys was composed in April-May 1968, when composer James Siddons was 19 years old. It was inspired by mime performers as well as the mechanical toys common in the early twentieth century.

Introduction:The Lament of Tou-Ehr, for Suona, Timpani, Percussion, and Chorus 　　This work was composed for a Chinese dance drama Snow Festival. The drama was based on an extremely touching story about a lady named Doue E, and was written by the author Guan Hanqing during the Yuan Dynasty. It is divided into three sections in a cyclic form, with one theme. The instrumentation includes voices for male and female, suona (Chinese cornet), there are more than ten traditional Chinese percussions are used, such as the wind gong, large and small luo (as used in Beijing opera), and the Chinese clapper, Paiban. The sound of suona indicates the lady Dou E with her battle cry and strong faith. The music begins after lady Dou E’s faint narrative. ※The Lament of Tou-Ehr was commissioned by the Neo Classical Music Group. The dance was arranged by Fon-xuei Liu, with orchestra and chorus conducted by the composer, Shui-long Ma himself. One of a series of fourteen accompaniments to texts published between 1886-1899 Duration 4:45 approx. For percussion (three players) and narrator Narrator text - from 'Le Horla' by Guy de Maupassant (1850 - 1893), published 1887. English translation by Jonathan Sturges (1864–1911) published 1890. Guy de Maupassant was a French writer, remembered as a master of the short story. It has been suggested that the word horla is a blending of the French words hors (outside) and là (there) and the title can be interpreted as the what’s out there. Percussion: Wind wand or bullroarer and two guiros (or similar). Players read from the score. Narrator cues are shown in the score in boxed text and below in square brackets. Between rehearsal letters [D] and [H] the percussionists maintain tempo; the narrator cues are for guidance only.
