Score and Full Set of 4 Parts This well known children's song is based on the old German folk tune Lauterbach Hab' Ich Mein Strumpf Verlor'n dating back to 1827 and was first published with lyrics by Septimus Winner in 1864. It has been arranged for the younger Orff Ensemble performers using simple rhythms and basic note values. Sop Glock and Alto Met play the tune throughout. Alto Glock provides some harmony with a simple bass line played by Bass Xylo. Arranged in the key of F Major, players will need their Bb bars. Dynamics and tempo markings are suggested ones only and Marimba makes a nice substitute for the Bass Xylo.

This original nonete (Flute, 1st Bb Clarinet, 2nd Bb Clarinet, Alto Sax, Baritone Sax, Bb Trumpet, Tuba, Timpani & Percussion) was first premiered at the University of Leeds in the UK. As a composer I utilized melodic serialism, consonant whole tone harmonies, intriguing chromatics, frequent syncopation, and a jazz flavour in several sections. Solos are presented by: Flute, Bb Trumpet, Baritone Sax and Tuba. The timpani and percussion (suspended cymbal being used in a high hat style and a woodblock keep things moving well. Stardust Inferno is a soca written for a steel band with the following instrumentation: Lead (Low C), Double Tenor, Double Seconds, Cello, Bass, and Drum Set. The motives found in this were written on a lead pan first, and then added variations and a solo section. The bass voices have a time to shine with their own melody, the double tenor and double seconds add harmony, and the drum set has group hits written in, rather than having a repeated pattern with slash notation on top. This was a fun piece to write, and is one of my favorites in my works for pan!

This composition begins with a 12/8 rock tempo. Although it is written in C, the composition is begins in D Minor. The Marimba keeps the 12/8 going while the other three become punctuations. The punctuation continues while the Glockenspiel plays the melody. At measure 15 the song moves into a 6/8 feel. At measure 34 the song returns to the original 12/8 feel. The composition then splits to where the Vibraphone takes on harmony in the 12/8 feel while the Glockenspiel and Xylophone take on a 6/8 countermelody. A short bridge is created by stacking the other 2 on top of the Vibraphone and Marimba 12/8 feel. Then it splits again to where the Xylophone stays with the Vibraphone and Marimba pattern and the Glockenspiel goes off on it's own. During this time the Glockenspiel folds in the 6/8 melody, creating a pleasant conflict. The song D.C.'s to the original 12/8 content. The Devil's Rag is a fun little xylophone rag based on some of the famous Green brothers' rags that really made xylophone literature catch on. This is more advanced and requires some quick hands, but is really entertaining to play and listen to. It is mostly in C minor, but plays in C major as well to depict the xylophone player trying to entertain the devil while keeping their own sanity. The player is the jester of the underground, making some interesting music and harmony while keeping rhythmic ideas quick and steady. Truly a joy to play. This composition is a Bolero in 12/8. It begins with the initial rhythm that is played throughout the piece. The piece begins at ppp and increases in volume as each instrument plays the melody section. As each instrument enters, it forms a round of the same melody. The bridge begins with the continuing rhythm with each instrument adding their own note with the same rhythm until the complete quartet is playing the same rhythm in a chord. The bridge leads to the climax section where the initial rhythm continues with the third instrument imitates a tympani while the upper two instruments play the melody in harmony at fff volume. This begins with a 7/4 time signature in A minor. The initial passage was created to sound like an industrial region in a run-down town. The machines continue to progress until the complete building is running like a well-oiled machine, to quote a anecdote. As it continues the business runs smooth like a waltz in 3/4 time. For a moment the initial passage returns before a climax in A major. The finale concludes as the day ends with the original passage returning in 7/4 time as the business closes for the day. The title of Dandelion Wind comes from watching the white seeds blow off of a dandelion head in a strong breeze. Once in motion, the seeds travel with the wind until they come to a final resting place on the ground below. This piece flows along in that vein of a seedling's windblown journey.Although two marimbas were used in the sound file, the piece works equally well with vibraphones, xylophones, or a vibe/xylo/marimba mix. It has a slight Celtic feel to it, and it comes in at just over 1:30 if played at the minimum suggested tempo. It's a great choice for your percussion ensemble or to showcase a pair of mallet players in your program. Beat it! is a piece for 7 musicians using untuned percussion. I was finding it hard to find ensemble pieces for mixed ability groups so decided to write my own. Within the piece you will find parts suitable for very new players alongside some for the more experienced musicians. The instruments involved should be easy to find in most band room environments but, as the parts are all non-melodic, they lend themselves easily to replacement instruments and duplicating parts for additional players. There is a strong focus on groove and interplay between musicians, perfect for developing cohesion in your ensemble. The piece has been well received in national festivals within the UK.
