The COVID Awakening is a marimba quartet for two 5.0 octave instruments. This piece is inspired by minimalism and minimalist compositional techniques combined with layering found in West African drumming, though it is not the only source of this specific technique. It was written during the beginning of the summer of 2020, when the Coronavirus, COVID-19, had started its grips on the United States in the forms of illness, death, and economic and emotional distress. This piece reflects on these early feelings of quarantines and sheltering in place, and using the techniques listed above the listeners are pulled in to listen between the notes. These reflections are found not in the music itself, but is different with every listen. The listeners’ ears will venture as they wish, and make this piece new with every performance, even though the notes and rhythms never change. Instrumentation: Two 5.0 octave marimbas, though only one marimba needs to be the full range. Marimba 1 can be a much smaller instrument if necessary. I’d suggest using rubber/latex mallets. Unless the performance is in a reasonably dry hall, this articulation and tone benefit does wonders for this piece. Each player needs only 2 mallets.

Rhythm of Life is built over a five beat pulse, representing the heartbeat of life on planet earth. The two basic pulses are played by different groups of instruments and passed from one group to another, but never ceasing, even as our heartbeats never cease as long as there is life in us. Over these fundamental patterns are built little phrases or solos for the various instruments, including conversations between pairs of instruments - first the timpani and tubular bells, later the marimba and xylophone, and finally the conga drums and the snare drum – these conversations represent various interactions among different groups of life on planet earth. This piece is ideally suited for the Marimba Workshop (Pty) Ltd marimbas.www.marimbaworkshop.co.za  It was arranged for the Goede Hoop Marimba Band to be performed at the 2016 Education Africa International Marimba & Steelpan Festival in the Strictly Classical Category where the composer for this category for that year was Antonio Vivaldi. This performance has gone viral on YouTube. These young girls were aged between 11 and 13 at the time. It is written for African diatonic marimbas in C with an African feel but can be played on a variety of different instruments. Feel free to roll (measured or unmeasured) on the long notes.Whenever I teach this arrangement my students fall in love with Vivaldi and his music. The medley consists of music from Vivaldi's Four Seasons: Spring and Winter and his famous Gloria. I wrote Nuevo-Nueve for an ensemble of nine new first-time percussion students. Nuevo meaning new or different, and Nueve meaning nine, seemed to be a good title for the piece. Going along with the concept of nine, the song is written in nine bar phrases and has a total of 99 measures as well. It uses simple and repetitive patterns to introduce students to the instruments that are utilized in the piece. Out of the nine students that I originally wrote it for, six were wind players and the other three had never read music. They had great success with it (and a lot of fun, too!). The first four parts are all listed as generic mallet parts, and all work pretty well with whatever mallet instruments that you have available. Part 3 and 4 double each other, but part 4 is in bass clef. They are written on the same sheet. If you have the equipment for it, I recommend the following instrumentation: Part 1: bells or marimba Part 2: vibraphone Part 3: marimba Part 4: (optional, bass clef, doubles part 3): bass guitar, keyboard, or mallet controller Part 5: hi-hat cymbal, suspended cymbal, mounted tambourine Part 6: guiro, castanets, maracas, two pitched toms Part 7: drum set Part 8: suspended cymbal, china cymbal, splash cymbal, triangle Part 9: concert bass drum, cabasaBe sure to check out my other small ensemble arrangements here on Sheet Music Plus, and thanks for taking a look!
