The band stand was forged by the National Heritage Ironwork Group as a gift to the city during their 2018 'BathIron' festival. The piece is written for 2 treble clef parts and a bass clef part and can be performed by any group of instruments. For the original performance it was performed on 2 Bb Clarinets and a Bass Clarinet.About the piece:'The Hammer & Anvil' is derived from the melody of an English folk song about a blacksmith (ironworker) which has been adapted and augmented to be used as a melodic foundation throughout the piece, similar to an isorhythm in medieval compositions. The piece is in two sections: the A section where the folk melody is confined to the bass and the B section where the melody is split between all three parts. A repeated rhythmic motif, representative of an ironworker using his hammer and anvil, is used to accompany and/or decorate this melody.

The COVID Awakening is a marimba quartet for two 5.0 octave instruments. This piece is inspired by minimalism and minimalist compositional techniques combined with layering found in West African drumming, though it is not the only source of this specific technique. It was written during the beginning of the summer of 2020, when the Coronavirus, COVID-19, had started its grips on the United States in the forms of illness, death, and economic and emotional distress. This piece reflects on these early feelings of quarantines and sheltering in place, and using the techniques listed above the listeners are pulled in to listen between the notes. These reflections are found not in the music itself, but is different with every listen. The listeners’ ears will venture as they wish, and make this piece new with every performance, even though the notes and rhythms never change. Instrumentation: Two 5.0 octave marimbas, though only one marimba needs to be the full range. Marimba 1 can be a much smaller instrument if necessary. I’d suggest using rubber/latex mallets. Unless the performance is in a reasonably dry hall, this articulation and tone benefit does wonders for this piece. Each player needs only 2 mallets.

One Hour to Madness for percussion septet. by Dan Heslink From its opening motto to its bold closing summation, One Hour to Madness explores a high degree of musical energy. The title is loosely inspired by Walt Whitman’s marvelous poem, One Hour to Madness and Joy (Leaves of Grass). The music presents a dark and exciting expression couched in pervasive contrapuntal development. A high degree of dissonance is contrasted with the second theme’s clear Bb major tonality. The work’s contrapuntal nature is distilled into a fugato in the second half. Predominantly a mallet ensemble composition, scoring is for orchestra bells (2 mallets), xylophone (2 mallets), vibraphone (4 mallets), 3 marimbas (each with 2 mallets) and timpani. The timpani part is best performed on the standard set of 4 drums (23-24, 25-26, 28-29, 32-30). The marimba 1 part requires the standard range of 3 ½ or 4 octaves; the marimba 2 part can be executed on the standard 4-octave instrument by omitting a few octave doublings, or on a 5-octave instrument if one is available; marimba 3 requires a 5-octave instrument. The composer assigns a difficulty level of advanced. It will serve any concert or recital very well. Audiences and performers alike will enjoy the flashy passage work and musical impetus afforded by One Hour to Madness. Duration is 3:41. Power Line: for 2 or More Energetic Percussionists is a two part ensemble for first year percussionist.  Performed on a drum pad, the work explores the sound a percussionist can make by playing on the head and rim of the pad and the metal stand on which the pad sits, and stick clicks  In addition, there are also vocal effects.  The performs say tzzzz imitating the sound or an electrical arc.  Rhythms include quarter note and eighth note patterns and a few instances of four sixteenth notes grouped into one beat (1e&a).  The performs are also asked to play flams, paradiddles and multi bounce rolls.  Finally there is a small section which features a drum to drum section where the performers will play on the pads on each side of the performer.  This is a fun and exciting work for your first year percussionist!  Enjoy!

I wrote Nuevo-Nueve for an ensemble of nine new first-time percussion students. Nuevo meaning new or different, and Nueve meaning nine, seemed to be a good title for the piece. Going along with the concept of nine, the song is written in nine bar phrases and has a total of 99 measures as well. It uses simple and repetitive patterns to introduce students to the instruments that are utilized in the piece. Out of the nine students that I originally wrote it for, six were wind players and the other three had never read music. They had great success with it (and a lot of fun, too!). The first four parts are all listed as generic mallet parts, and all work pretty well with whatever mallet instruments that you have available. Part 3 and 4 double each other, but part 4 is in bass clef. They are written on the same sheet. If you have the equipment for it, I recommend the following instrumentation: Part 1: bells or marimba Part 2: vibraphone Part 3: marimba Part 4: (optional, bass clef, doubles part 3): bass guitar, keyboard, or mallet controller Part 5: hi-hat cymbal, suspended cymbal, mounted tambourine Part 6: guiro, castanets, maracas, two pitched toms Part 7: drum set Part 8: suspended cymbal, china cymbal, splash cymbal, triangle Part 9: concert bass drum, cabasaBe sure to check out my other small ensemble arrangements here on Sheet Music Plus, and thanks for taking a look!
