Published by Slide Ride (A0.784338). 1 Octave Scale Studies in 15+ keys for 4-part ensembles of like or mixed instruments If this is your first exposure to these scale studies, you are in for a treat! Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Die schöne Galathée (The Beautiful Galatea) is an operetta in two acts by Franz von Suppé to a German libretto by the composer and 'Poly Henrion' (the pseudonym of Leonhard Kohl von Kohlenegg). This arrangement of Einmal möcht' Ich so verliebt sein (one aria of the operetta) for orchestra and soprano voice is a very good Encore or an orchestral piece for your repertoire.Flavio Regis Cunha is a pianist, conductor and composer from São Paulo - Brasil. Franz von Suppé was obliged to compete with them by taking the time-honored traditions of Vienna and combining it with the new style of Offenbach. Die schöne Galathée was Franz von Suppé's first critical success. The sculptor Pygmalion has fallen madly in love with his statue of Galathée and accordingly does not want to sell it to Mydas, a patron of the arts. Instead he prays to Venus, the goddess of the love, that the statue be brought to life. The wish is granted but Galathée turns out to be a very independent-minded creature. She is unfaithful to Pygmalion with his servant Ganymed (because he is much more pleasing to her than Pygmalion) and does not reject Mydas, who offers her jewelry. When Pygmalion catches Galathée in a compromising situation, he successfully implores Venus to turn her back into stone. The jewelry offered by Mydas is also turned into stone, but the whole statue is sold to him.

In my search for great pieces, some were too hard, others too easy. So, I decided to write my own.The piece also draws inspiration from funk and Taiko drumming. It also pays homage to the great percussion composer Kevin Tuck and his piece Summon the Spirits, who has created drumming pieces that are the staple of percussion music all around the world.As always, the aim is that the ensemble has fun and enjoys the groove. Coming from a long background of Latin and African drumming styles, my compositions place a heavy emphasis on feeling the rhythm and hearing all the parts lock in, rather than being accurate.

For narrator (amplified if necessary), flutes (and/or tenor/bass recorders), clarinets, muted strings, percussion. Programme note: ‘The Ballad of Reading Gaol’ was written by Oscar Wilde in France on release from Reading Gaol in 1897 after being sentenced to two years hard labour. During his imprisonment Charles Thomas Wooldridge, who had been convicted of murdering his wife, was hanged. The poem was published in 1898 under the name C.3.3., which stood for cell block C, landing 3, cell 3. The text is a mixture of the first and second versions of Wilde’s poem.

In this movement, we can find sonata form elements as the exposition, development, transitions or coda.The central part of the first movement becomes in the slow movement, being more intimate and lyrical, free of the serials ties although it uses resources before cited -now called common practice-.The movement finish with a short re-exposition that concludes with the virtuosic of the soloist doubling the series and adding more tension until conforming the series in its full whole.II. Sharks’ Teeth, a Game for any Number of Percussionists. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . Dan Heslink Sharks’ Teeth is a musical game, or contest, between two or more percussionists. It is based on rhythm, and can therefore be executed on any combination of indefinitely-pitched percussion instruments. Its execution relies on guided improvisation governed by preconceived thematic material and manners of elaboration. In addition to the two or more contestants, another musician functions as a Game Meister (GM) who controls that game’s progress and evaluation. Enclosed are the game instructions for a contest of guided improvisation, and a notated example for two percussionists and Game Meister, Shark’s Tooth. This score can also be played on recital. After reading the contest instructions, the composer recommends that contestants next play the notated example before attempting the game through improvisation. Besides being fun to play, this game is also an excellent tool for fostering concentration, musicality, memory and an understanding of musical structure. I named this piece after my younger sister Noff, whose name means ‘a beautiful view’.The piece was written for SoundStruck in 2016, for their performance at the Australian Percussion Gathering.In this composition, each player represents a set of notes in a specific harmonic series associated with their whirlies. Together, the ensemble creates harmony and resonates within the space.This piece is beautiful when performed in large auditoriums, churches or halls.

It was written in memory of Ohio Band Director, Dan Meeks. In life we celebrate many occasions: birthdays, holidays, vacations, winning seasons, winning the lottery, anniversaries, marriages and births, just to name a few. But at times of loss we can also celebrate those who have left an indelible mark on us. Parents, mentors and teachers fit into this category. This piece is written to celebrate learning and though who guided us on our path. Specifically this piece is dedicated in memory of Dan Meeks, a teacher, band director, percussionist, husband and dad who touched so many lives teaching and guiding his family, friends and students through part of their lives. We are forever in debt to people like Dan and celebrate them. Dan would often say, Just Have Fun! This piece is written with that joy and love of life in mind. Thanks Dan, you always made it fun. The composition for six percussionists tells the battle of Kiev, the largest battle in history, as well as one of the largest in the Second World War. The scream performed by the percussionists tells of the clash that took place in 1941 between August and September during the early stages of the conflict between the Third Reich and the USSR. It was the Russians who capitulated, whose dead make up most of the 700,000 who remained in the field, letting the Germans penetrate the plains of Ukraine.

'Botsotsi' is Setswana (A dialect spoken in the Southern African country of Botswana) for 'crook' In this instance the term refers to someone who is cool and has some fancy dance moves as depicted in this vibrant and melodious composition.
