This fourth booklet is dedicated to ensemble playing through five trios and three quartets of various styles (tango, ballad, rock, etc.) appropriate for the end of primary school with a few years of experience and the beginning of secondary school. Some pieces are written in a homorhythmic manner and can constitute an introduction to ensemble music, while others are rather polyrhythmic. They can constitute a first contact with the following techniques and effects: staccato, pizzicato, accent, louré, natural harmonic, percussion or crossed strings. This volume is therefore intended for guitarists who already know the notes in first position. Two pieces include a more advanced part with an introduction to playing in 5th position. These are short pieces that do not present technical challenges other than those allowing you to achieve the effects and play expressively.You will find in the scores indications of nuances, timbre, attack and fingerings which constitute suggestions for work and not prescriptions. Teachers and students are therefore invited to make interpretation choices different from those proposed or to try to convincingly render those already written.The pieces were composed or arranged by UQAM music education students as part of a course aimed at equipping musicians for teaching guitar in the school system. Many of them are musicians from different backgrounds (composition, performance, world music, etc.), which explains the creativity found in the pieces. An arrangement of traditional themes of the Flamenco style (palo) Alegrias de Baile (Alegrias for dance) that I acquired during my years of study with Juan González ?Triguito? in Madrid in the late 1960s. The title of the piece that contains bright and happy passages in A major and slower more somber passages in A minor is taken from the name of a popular alcoholic drink that is a mixture of clear anisette (sol) and cognac (sombra). The composition is meant to resemble an Alegrias played in accompaniment to the dance, often performed by a solo woman dancer (bailaora) in a beautifully coloured long flowing dress. The piece finishes with a Macho por Bulerías (finale) that is almost twice as fast as the passages in the introduction and middle parts. There is a long beautiful tremolo passage that rounds off the middle part before the jump into the finale. The piece is recommended for students of Flamenco guitar at the intermediate to advanced intermediate levels.

Donut Music is an extended piece for solo guitar. It was commissioned by Keith Calmes and is on his CD All We Know is Now. The music was inspired by a line in a story written by my granddaughter Eillonwy (then 8 years old): Sitting in a dark room, eating a chocolate donut. The music represents a stream of memories, images, and thoughts as one’s life is contemplated over a donut. The composition is in 9 movements...or bites. The movements have varied lengths, from miniatures to developed pieces, and draw upon various roots-based musical styles including blues, Appalachian, tango, jazz, and samba. Miniature compositions have been an interest to me for many years. Donut Music's imagery gave me an opportunity to have several miniature compositions along with the longer movements. Although it was composed as an étude for this instrument, this arrangement for the 6-string guitar doesn't fail to capture its beauty. The 7-string version is faithful to the original, regarding the bass notes. This set includes a new engraving of the original in double staff and both 6 and 7 string guitar standard notation. Antonio Jimenéz Manjón (1866-1919)Antonio Jiménez Manjón was a Spanish guitarist born in 1866 in the Andalusian city of Villacarillo. Blind from an early age, he began his musical career at the age of twelve, performing in Spain and Portugal, where he played for the Portuguese King Fernando II.Soon after, the young Antonio traveled to Paris alone, where he studied violin at the Conservatory while pursuing his guitar career. He was surrounded by musicians such as Gounod, Saint-Saëns, and Sarasate.In 1887, Manjón returned to his home country and was invited by the Spanish monarchs to perform in the Royal Palace. During those years, he toured Europe with his Torres eleven-string guitar. In 1893, he crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, settling in Buenos Aires in 1902 after performing and teaching in several Latin American countries.In Argentina, he founded a conservatory and published his work Escuela de Guitarra.Antonio Jiménez Manjón passed away in 1919 in Buenos Aires.ISMN 979-0-9007524-5-1 ÂÂ

He was also director of the Paris Conservatory for 15 years (1905 -1920). He wrote many songs and short piano pieces, and a number of longer orchestral works, among them 'Pavane', Ballade for piano and orchestra, and Requiem. At its heart Fauré's music is the essence of French lyricism. Unforced and beguiling, its fine melodies and counter melodies invest the harmonic structures with subtle shifts to form a delicately balanced idiom.The lovely themes and counterpoints of the Cantique de Jean Racine suit the tremolo style. The text had been translated from a Latin hymn by Jean Racine in 1688.

These pieces have been transcribed from arrangements for flute and guitar. Bela Bartok, considered one of the 20th century’s most important composers, was born in Hungary in 1881. A prodigy, he was a professor at the Budapest Music Academy by the age of 26. His interest in traditional music led him to make many journeys (with his colleague Zolta Kodaly) through Hungary, Romania and Slovakia collecting songs and dances, the styles of which were synthesised into compositions of his own. He emigrated to the USA in 1940 where he died five years later of leukaemia. The pieces are deceptively simple, and it would be a mistake to take their natural forms, clear melodies, tonal harmonies and strong rhythms as an invitation to play inattentively. Quite the contrary. They stand any amount of playing, but only when the composing is heeded, the dynamics observed, and modulations anticipated.

With inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement of the song Over the Rainbow for solo acoustic guitar. In my childhood The Wizard of Oz was one of my favourite fairy tales, especially as I spent a few of my early years in the little town of Winfield Kansas where tornadoes were a constant threat. I still remember huddling in the cellar with my mother and little brother when a tornado warning had been broadcast.With this in mind, the first part of the arrangement is meant to resemble a whirlwind that takes us up to the dreamland of Oz portrayed in the slower second part. In the third part, we come back down to waking reality in another mirror image whirlwind. The arrangement has an afro-flamenco character with two tiers of rhythm. Tier one is the normal 4/4 rhythm with accents at 1 and 3. Tier two consists of accents falling on beats 2 and 2& and 3& of the 4 beat measures. Tier two can be highlighted by clapping or tapping with a table knife on a bottle at beats 2 and 2& and 3&, with the strongest accent on 3& (an upbeat). The piece ends with a chord of natural harmonics on the 3& upbeat. The natural harmonics in the rhythmic fingerpicking resembling a kalimba (thumb harp) add an African touch to the piece.The piece is within reach of advanced intermediate students of fingerstyle or classical acoustic guitar. Besides the polyrhythmic fingerpicking, in the second dreamland part the piece offers the opportunity to play a broken chord of right hand harmonics, usually a real hit with listening audiences. I give suggestions for left and right hand fingering where I think necessary. The suggested tempo is presto for the fast first and third parts, but they could be played even faster for dramatic effect. The slow dreamland second part should be played with the melody floating lazily over the beat.The piece is a good follow up to my arrangements, also available at SheetMusicDirect and SheetMusicPlus of Freight Train and What a Wonderful World that use the same fingerpicking techniques.

Edel had returned to St. Joseph to perform his competition winner’s concert. We met again at Classical Minds in Houston in June 2012 at which point we got to hear each others’ concerts. Edel is one of the most suave and subtle yet powerful players I have ever heard. I was thrilled that he asked me to write a piece for him.At the time of composition I generally used various techniques for generating musical ideas developed over the previous years. But I tossed those ideas out the door and wrote from pure inspiration. The result is my first piece that uses the octatonic, or diminished scale. It alternates between dramatic chordal outbursts and flowing bass melodies. Black Falcon is in two sections: Larghissimo in 4/2 and Allegro in 12/8. The second movement …and the Sky is the Limit written in an ABA cyclic form is full of rhythmic gestures starting with the combination of 7/8, 2/4, 5/8 and 3/4 in the first four measures that leads to a slow movement as an attempt to sing a Greek song in those vast territories and to portray the thankfulness of being there and experience the presence of the amazing beauty of it. When asked why he commissioned this piece, Holzman replied, My wife and I spend our summers in Stowe. We love being there, celebrate the summer and spend time outside. We have family and friends who come and share a few days with us and Apostolos is a dear friend who has been coming for several years. We talked about the possibility of him writing a piece that reflected Stowe and the mountains. When asked about the piece, Paraskevas responded, I always write music for the person behind the instrument, so while composing every note of this piece I had Adam in my mind; the way he plays, the way he breathes the way he lives his life. He and Paganini were friends from the 1830s; while it was once thought that he and Paganini performed together in public (Powroźniak mentions a concert in Northern Italy in 1837),[4] there is no evidence to support this claim. After the 1850s Legnani retired from active performance and became an instrument maker, concentrating on guitars and violins. The Legnani model guitar was popular in Central Europe through the middle of the nineteenth century.Legnani composed some 250 works, which were published in his lifetime throughout many of the major publishing houses in Europe. He died in Ravenna.

Études for Solo Guitar
The subject of creating an educational aid for guitar students of an intermediate level that will serve also as a similar aid for theory and composition students fascinates me and motivates my compositional thought for quite a while. The objective was to create miniature complete works for the guitar, as J. S. Bach did with his fifteen inventions, in the ?manner? of an Étude that deals with specific aspects of guitar techniques and musicianship in general.
These Études are gradually graded based on their difficulty and style. They cover all the positions of the guitar and explore known and some unfamiliar techniques for the contemporary guitarist.
I used a compositional language more familiar for the level of the intermediate guitarist but without sacrificing my original compositional voice so these pieces could be used as concert works by the advanced musicians as well. My intention is to educate students in a multilevel study environment and to be able to promote the music of our time. During my teaching years I found that students become better musicians when they have been taught to adapt certain performance difficulties and compositional techniques at an earlier level of their training.
