Guitar - difficult - Digital Download First Sonata on Shakespearean Characters. Composed by Hans Werner Henze (1926-). This edition: Sheet music. Guitar Archive. Downloadable. Duration 25 minutes. Schott Music - Digital #Q4978. Published by Schott Music - Digital
My idea of developing music from Richard of Gloucester's monologue 'Now is the winter of our discontent', and of generating more music from that material, was conceived during the 1960s. Ten years later it took a more concrete form, when Julian Bream suggested to me that I should write a substanial new guitar work for him. More time went by, and only having finished 'We Come to the River' could I begin to realise our plan. Then began a collaboration with the instrumentalist that went through various phases, from which I gained a more profound knowledge of the technicalities and of the sound-world of the guitar. I would even go so far as to say that this collaboration gave me a new concept of how to write for an instrument with a rich tradition. The guitar is a 'knowing' or 'knowledgeable' instrument, with many limitations but also many unexplored spaces and depths within these limits. It possesses a richness of sound capable of embracing everything one might find in a gigantic contemporary orchestra. but one has to start from silence in order to notice this: one has to pause, and completely exclude noise.<br> The dramatis personae of this piece enter through the sound of the guitar as if it were curtain. Through masks, voices and gestures, they speak to us of great passion, of tenderness, sadness and comedy: strange events in people's lives. Into this, the whispering voices of spirits are mingled. The epilogue is spoken by Oberon, pacified and reconciled, as though Nature had been subjected to Man.<br> - Hans Werner Henze.

English.<br> <br> Style &. Craft - Troubleshooting 1 - The Fingerboard Map: Chords. The Guide To Twentieth-Century Guitar: Praxis is the first instructional book of its kind. It takes a strikingly new and refreshing approach to learning guitar, and it is carefully designed to guarantee efficient practice with rewarding results. Establish Your Own Musical Direction: Whether your playing falls under one of the more traditional conventional styles, or whether you're a composer and arranger or exploring new musical regions and establishing your own musical direction or personal fusion of musical ideas and influences, Praxis has what you need. Unlock The Musician Within: The name of the system (Praxis comes from the Greek word meaning practice and to do) accurately reflects its general orientation. Play it first, getting sound and satisfaction out of the guitar immediately, and musical understanding will naturally follow. Praxis lets you choose the precise subject you want and immediately provides relevant musical examples. And these examples are presented in such a way that the principle behind the example is always clear, thus allowing you to apply it directly to your music. One Step Beyond - Originators Vs. Imitators: Traditional guitar books try to teach you to play someone else's music. That approach tends to produce imitators rather than originators and real musicianship skills are picked up slowly and almost by accident. Praxis takes you directly to being able to play anything that you want ... someone else's music, your own music, and everything in between. Praxis takes you one step beyond. Efficient Learning: Guitar instruction books are traditionally written in a progressive fashion. Book 1 first, then Book 2, etc. However, the selection and sequencing of material is usually determined by the book rather than the reader, and the familiar result is that, while the book progresses, the student doesn't. Again, Praxis reverses this. You don't have to start with Book 1, there is no Book 1! You go where your interests lie. Just begin work on any one subject in any volume that attracts you. Composed by William Bay. Solos. Achieving Guitar Artistry. Style. E-book. 104 pages. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #WBM23EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music
ISBN 9781619117143.<br> <br> This is the flagship book in Mel Bay's Achieving Guitar Artistry series. Herein you will find an extensive collection of linear pieces with interesting melodic content. Frequent performance of these etudes will not only enhance technique, but offer the guitarist a wonderful opportunity to improve tone, touch and lyrical phrasing. We suggest playing each etude at a slow tempo at first, the goal being to achieve a clear and beautiful tone on every note. The next objective is to develop a sense of lyrical completeness to each musical phrase. Make the phrases sing! Once you have achieved the desired quality of tone and expression, increase the tempo to work on the technique.Mel Bay's Guitar Journals - Mastering the Fingerboard: The Reading Book (MB20903) would make an ideal supplement to Linear Guitar Etudes as it presents etudes in all keys and positions. The pieces in Linear Guitar Etudes are multi-positional. That is, the player will be required to move from position to position on the fingerboard. The music is presented in standard notation only, with left-hand fingering included on the more complex passages, and circled numbers to indicate the strings where certainnotes and passages are to be played. These etudes sound good on both nylon and steel-string guitars, and will be a valuable addition to the music library of any guitarist, enhancing their abilities regardless of the style of music played.

Guitar - Intermediate - Digital Download Classical. E-book. 49 pages. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #30947EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music
ISBN 9781513459844. 8.75x11.75 inches.<br> <br> This book presents 42 English folk songs arranged for the intermediate classic guitarist in standard notation with phrase and dynamic markings plus light fingering. The collection includes popular melodies like Sprig of Thyme, Seventeen Come Sunday, and Blow the Wind Southerly, but also lesser known but no less beautiful tunes like Cupid the Pretty Ploughboy, Dabbling in the Dew and Saucy Sailor. All the arrangements present the basic tune faithfully and simply before offering more elaborate and sophisticated variations suitable for concert performance. Without compromising their sophistication, these polyphonic arrangements are elegant and idiomatic to the guitar, all but devoid of excessive physical demands; even barre chords are kept to a minimum so the player can relax and focus on tone and interpretation. The primary objective of this collection is to draw attention to these deserving melodies, some of which are now rarely heard. Longtime fans of the genre will recognize a few songs once performed by folk-rock groups like Steeleye Span and The Fairport Convention, here presented anew for the solo classic guitar. Its an excellent collection - good to play for pleasure, good for learning and consolidating rhythm, good for sight-reading. Just marvelous. It should meet a lot of needs. Gilbert Biberian These are very accessible arrangements of 42 English folk tunes, some of which are familiar and many others which deserve to be better known. They are all tuneful and have interesting harmonies and rhythms in arrangements which will be well within the reach of intermediate guitarists. These fine settings would be useful pieces for a teacher looking for supplementary material and also for the performer looking for unhackneyed repertoire. They are thoughtfully presented with good fingering and phrasing, with idiomatic guitar writing and interesting harmonies. Congratulations to Peter Worley for presenting this compendium of gems from a lesser known tradition. Gerald Garcia.

Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas (1964-). Contemporary Classical, Modern, Etudes and Exercises, Repertoire, World. Score. 37 pages. Published by Silver Sickle Publications
Études for Solo Guitar<br> The subject of creating an educational aid for guitar students of an intermediate level that will serve also as a similar aid for theory and composition students fascinates me and motivates my compositional thought for quite a while. The objective was to create miniature complete works for the guitar, as J. S. Bach did with his fifteen inventions, in the “manner” of an Étude that deals with specific aspects of guitar techniques and musicianship in general.<br> <br> <br> These Études are gradually graded based on their difficulty and style. They cover all the positions of the guitar and explore known and some unfamiliar techniques for the contemporary guitarist.<br> I used a compositional language more familiar for the level of the intermediate guitarist but without sacrificing my original compositional voice so these pieces could be used as concert works by the advanced musicians as well. My intention is to educate students in a multilevel study environment and to be able to promote the music of our time. During my teaching years I found that students become better musicians when they have been taught to adapt certain performance difficulties and compositional techniques at an earlier level of their training.<br> Titles:<br> <br> 1 with false optimism<br> <br> 2 with moderate sadness<br> <br> 3 with just the two of you<br> <br> 4 with a touch of impatience<br> <br> 5 with a touch of grandeur<br> <br> 6 with a counterpoint attitude<br> <br> 7 with a touch of shame<br> <br> 8 with a touch of boredom<br> <br> 9 going and never coming back<br> <br> 10 with a peaceful anger<br> <br> 11 without the heavy ones<br> <br> 12 without hope<br> <br> 13 without sense of humor<br> <br> 14 with a masculine attitude<br> <br> 15 with two little bears in mind<br> <br> 16 without hesitation<br> <br> 17 with shameless vibrato<br> <br> 18 with a touch of distress<br> <br> 19 without fear of failure<br> <br> 20 with this and that<br> <br> 21 with a kind motion<br> <br> 22 with a rondo attitude<br> <br> 23 with suspense<br> <br> 24 with everything you may have

Preferred Contact Information: RMonteverdi@comcast.net Performing Rights Organization: BMI Website: robertgreenbergmusic.com Facebook Band Page: facebook.com/RobertGreenbergMusic Duration: ca. 21 minutes Year of composition: 1996 Program Note: I. Toccata/Hands of Steel II. Strum/Serenade III. O Tanenbaum (Toccata reprise) IV. Two-Part Contention V. John Doe VI. True Pluck A number of years ago, the great English guitarist Julian Bream told David Tanenbaum - the dedicatee of tonight's premiere - not to premiere a guitar work unless he knew for a fact it was the composer's second guitar work. Sage advice. The guitar is an instrument that gives up its secrets to a non-guitar playing composer only reluctantly. Indeed, the timbral, digital and chordal subtleties of this most subtle and intimate instrument are truly understood by the guitarist only. Pity the outlander who composes for the guitar for the first time! With this last thought in mind I had, until last fall, managed to avoid writing a guitar piece. However, even the most abject compositional coward will relent when a musician like David Tanenbaum asks for a piece and offers his assistance and critical judgement in its composition. So it was with PLUCK, composed between November of 1995 and January of 1996. Bream's advice notwithstanding, PLUCK is my first guitar piece. Tanenbaum is brave. The title, PLUCK, thus refers to both the action of plucking strings as well as pluck - bravery, grit, true grit. PLUCK is written in six interrelated movements. The first movement, Toccata/Hands of Steel introduces much of the essential pitch and harmonic material of the piece, as well as Flamenco-style rasgueado strumming which, try as I might, I could not resist using. Movement two, Strum/Serenade, explains itself in its title. Movement three, O Tanenbaum (a designation for which David has forgiven me) reprises the Toccata and describes, well, a sort of musical tree (David has forgiven me for this, too). Two-Part Contention is a combatative, argumentative movement that pits the treble strings of the guitar against the bass. Movement 5, John Doe is a lyric and mysterious moment of rest before the manic finale. Movement 6, True Pluck, is a fast, furious and virtuosic finale. PLUCK is dedicated, with greatest respect and affection, to my friend David Tanenbaum. May he only want to play my second guitar piece.

Solo Guitar - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1139670 Composed by Brian Streckfus. Instructional,Jazz,Singer/Songwriter. Individual part. 12 pages. Brian Streckfus #739941. Published by Brian Streckfus (A0.1139670). This is a 12-page PDF showing 7 guitar chords on each page. Rather than selling each PDF seperately (which is a bit overpriced and too much of a hassle), I decided to combine them and offer a great deal! Learn how to compose chord progressions like a pro while having fun and playing! Objective:Teach yourself the seven chords that belong to each type of scale. Rather than bombard you with a thousand guitar chords (which is easy to happen when browsing the internet or playing random songs), I'd rather show how a select few chords are working well together in common contexts. The hope is that you would then be able to see this happening in all 12 keys. What Scales/Modes are being harmonized? C Major (+jazz version) A (natural) minor (+jazz version) A harmonic minor (+jazz version) B Locrian D Dorian E Phyrigian F Lydian G Mixolydian Features: Slowly increases in physical and theoritcal difficulty at the same time. Many music theory books seem abstract and impractical whereas these chord charts show music theory applied to guitar. These chord progressions are a great composition aid. Guitar chord diagrams Traditional notation with letter names on the note heads Roman numerals color coded Modes included. The Beatles and jazz musicians use modal chord progressions to give their music uniqueness. It's almost as if one note is wrong intentionally. Practicality and flow on guitar is emphasized more then music theory conciseness. Letter names are not in a perfect order (as that is sometimes impossible for the guitar to do). Sometimes a more complex chord is opted for because it's actually easier to play physically. Tips: Order = Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue for stereotypical classical style chord progressions. Rock and blues often do more of a chord succession; red going to yellow happens often, even though it is breaking a rule. The professional names for blue, yellow, red: tonic, predominant, dominant respectively. I did not invent this theoretical concept, but I am probably one of the few musician's to color code the categories regularly. The colors explain the situation elegantly; the professional words seem like abstract PhD education, whereas saying blue is relaxing and red is uncomfortable is something a child can understand quickly. One fantastic tip I hardly hear anyone say: it doesn't so much matter that you play the same chord as the other musician in your ensemble (unless you are getting paid to do exactly that). It matters more that you simply play the same color as them. You will have a deeper understanding of how music works if you think like this, and mistakes will no longer be seen as mistakes. What happens when a C Major and A minor chord are played at the same time? Hardly anything! It's just a Am7! Big whoop! It isn't a horrendous sounding mistake. Circle a key on the circle of fifths. Now circle the two keys next to it (-1b, +1#). This leads to six chords that belong diatonically to the first key you circled! Memorizing these will allow you to better predict what composers are about to do, especially if you know ahead of time that the song does not change key. Get away from the echo chamber of common are arugably bad cowboy chords and be able to build your own.

Solo Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.942099 Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Contemporary,World. Individual part. 9 pages. Silver Sickle Publications #6227369. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942099). Nadir (1994) is written for prepared guitar, a term usually associated with a piano in which certain objects have been placed on the strings in order to alter the conventional sound of the instrument. Many composers have written music for prepared piano, among them John Cage, who, according to Mr. Paraskevas, was the inspiration for his transferring of the same technique to the guitar. It is quite possible that nobody has used this kind of technique on the guitar before. After experimenting with various materials, he decided on the use of two metal paper clips, which he puts at specific locations on the fingerboard, so that they best produce the desired sound effect, a sound both harmonic and percussive. Nadir suggests the lowest point, here associated with the notion of death. The piece bears many programmatic references to the struggle between good and evil, life and death, musically portrayed in the persistent ostinato rhythms and the fragmented melodic phrases. Death cuts through in the form of an abrupt strike on the wood, the fingers continue to play but no sound is heard, until two more strikes make their movement stop. Little by little life and sound start again, but the final strike brings about the pessimistic message that fate and death predominate in the end. The piece ends with the inscription ...but sooner or later we live forever - a final optimistic touch. Nadir was the outcome of continuous experimentation on the capabilities of the guitar as an instrument, and all the potential sound effects that one can draw from it. ...Dr. Paraskevas, is an amazingly versatile guitarist. He conquers the many technical challenges of this repertoire with ease, he can sing with the purest tone (try the opening work, Alfonsina y el Mar, and see). What makes Visions of Azure a wonderful guitar CD rather than simply a good one is the last 18 minutes. The guitarist saves his own compositions for last, and if the ear is fatigued at this point in the recital. Paraskevas gives it good reason to wake up....I am sold on Paraskevas's playing, and do not think hunting down the alternatives is necessary. In short, this is an essential CD for those interested in modern classical guitar.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899136 Composed by Alban Berg. Arranged by Rod Whittle. Contemporary. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #3874083. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899136). For solo classical guitar; 4 pp; first part of 2nd movement of the Lyric SuiteAlban Berg 1885 -1935Berg was a student of Arnold Schoenberg, and came to prominence with compositions using the atonalism of that school. He incorporated chromaticism and an absence of tonality into his compositions with complete facility, if not to public acclaim. His creativity was interrupted by World War 1, during which he served in the Austrian Army. He returned to composition as a champion of modern music, with his opera Wozzeck (1923) bringing both fame and notoriety. He died of blood poisoning in 1935. Over the past century dissonance increased in the compositions of serious music to a point where the semitones had equal value, which is harmonically a kind of wall. Berg was an early innovator. However, if when strictly followed such serialism reaches an ultimate dissonance that effectively sees off melody and harmony as emotional and structural entities, that still leaves elements around form, dynamics and rhythm for the purposes of expression, and these together with adroit note selection prove to be surprisingly potent for articulation and cohesion. The Lyric Suite (1927), which uses Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, is a case in point. The very name seems incongruous for an atonal work, yet lyric it is, and if the forms used are necessarily masked by the characteristics of serial writing they are not eliminated by them. In this excerpt a rondo form is used with the principle subject repeated on the third page (noted in the score) after a digression to more remote regions than this form usually adopts, due to the atonality. As well, Berg's writing is rarely purely atonal. In fact the integration of consonant elements are one of the music's most alluring features. It would be so easy, one feels, for melodic material to coagulate the mix, but in his hands the very opposite is generated, an increased clarity of mood. The music remains consistent, as it should, and the incorporation of (often only relatively) thematic material, if often arresting after so much dissonance, doesn't always always mean less intensity or gloom. It is simply effective, either way. Having said all that, it can hardly be denied that the substance of atonality (dissonance, clashing semitones, unharmonic bass) gives it a special suitability to express dark outlooks, and Berg is the author of Wozzeck and Lulu, no downtown musicals. It is hard to determine if Berg chose atonality because it could deliver the angst or because he was bored with obvious forms and romanticism. Probably both.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899109 Composed by Richard Strauss. Arranged by Rod Whittle. 20th Century. Individual part. 2 pages. Maggie Creek Music #25787. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899109). 2 pages; for solo classical guitar; published by Maggie Creek MusicRichard Strauss (1864 -1949) Strauss's music amounts to a huge body of symphonic and operatic work written over 60 years. Full of vitality, endlessly melodic, brilliantly orchestrated, it begins and ends in the romantic tradition, but for the most part expresses something more modern and individualistic, not without controversy in its time. Variation of style and structure is drawn from the descriptive (literary) nature of compositions, and an extraordinary inventiveness enlivens the scenes, moods and situations. Strauss said once that he produced music the way cows give milk, and indeed his music rarely seems contrived. The opera Strauss wrote 15 operas on a variety of subjects and across the whole spectrum of drama. He acknowledged being enchanted by the soprano voice, and his writing for it highlights many of the works, including Adriane auf Naxos (composed in 1912). The opera has been described as 'sparkling', which sums it up well, and passages influenced by Bach, Mozart, Puccini, and Wagner add to the interest. The storyline is a play within a play, the second part being the mythological 'Opera' staged in the story. The three pieces transcribed* are from this Opera. The guitar arrangements All classical guitar pieces are compromises. The instrument has only six strings, the left hand four fingers able to be used, and with the right hand its rare to use more than three fingers and the thumb. So, despite the amount of noise possible, it's inevitable that passages occur where either harmony, bass or fragments of counterpoint that would be beneficial are left out. In particular, the higher up the neck music is played the simpler it tends to be, if harder to play, and unless the low bass is an open string there wont be any. So I think the main part of attaining a fair transcription (better to be called an arrangement if the original musical structure is not strictly followed, as in this case) is determining how a good compromise can be reached. Melody, counterpoint, bass and main harmonies demand inclusion, and register is important. One may generally assume the original score can't be improved on. However, if the music may sound well on guitar, and the above elements can be incorporated without the playing becoming very difficult, something enjoyable to play and worthwhile listening to should be able to be achieved. Overture; 'A golden time …' Here the Mozart influence, better, inspiration, is wonderfully evident. A gentle waltz time (only the first section of the overture is transcribed) carries the colourful harmonies, strong melodic threads and connecting flourishes that stamp both pieces. The aria is alluded to in the Overture several times, which as you would expect, is intricately woven with the hints themes later to be established in the Opera. It has a kind of 'jazzy' freedom, and it's always miraculous to me that composition so involved can retain its musical line, here done in Strauss's inimitable way. The aria, sung not far into the Opera, has the perfect inevitability of Mozart, but again it is Strauss. As explained, keys have been changed to suit the guitar. Chorus and Aria This selection from the finale has features well worth trying to translate. The device of having a strong chorus, in the style of a Bach chorale, stated and then counterpointed by a solo voice in a restatement, is potent, and that in the opera the chorus (of the three nymphs) isn't immediately followed by the accompanying aria (of Ariadne) means the latter comes as a moment of surprising beauty. Neither parts are complicated, and lovely arpeggios, a feature Strauss's music, often impart the assured progressions. A problem was to capture the distinct register o.

Individual part. 6 pages. JANDERSON GOMES DA SILVA #730798. Published by JANDERSON GOMES DA SILVA (A0.1130430). This is a tablature version of the homonymous title material: “I Surrender Allâ€; traditional Christian hymn arranged for solo guitar with classical music elements and dissonant chords. The objective of this variant is to reach music lovers who do not have the theoretical knowledge of musical reading (score). The arrangement was created freely according to the arranger's sensibility and instrumental experience. Although created by a professional, in this version the work can be appropriated by amateurs who basically contemplate reading tablature.

Published by Mfp Éditions (A0.1458184). Composer : Sylvius Leopold WeissArrangement & fingerings : Maël FauvyLevel : Medium – Grade II20 pieces for guitare : Suite in D minor — 20 pagesIn 1941, this manuscript was transferred from the Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky National Academy of Music to the Music Library of the Glinka State Central Museum of Musical Culture in Moscow.Revealed to the Western world only in 1963, we now know, thanks to his analysis, that it was neither written by Weiss nor written in Dresden, but in Russia approximately ten years after his death.A number of pieces are of doubtful origin and are still the subject of open debate. In his work “The Moscow “Weiss” Manuscript” (Orphée 494-02144, 1995) Tim Crawford sheds interesting light on the subject. The Moscow Manuscript can be ranked third in importance after those of London and Dresden. Especially since it contains many high quality pieces and some truly unique. This arrangement presents the first suite in D minor from the manuscript, arranged for solo guitar.
