Solo Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.899138 Composed by A. Scriabin. Arranged by Rod Whittle. 20th Century. Individual part. 1 pages. Maggie Creek Music #4349093. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899138). for solo classical guitar (tremolo) 3 pp (4 min.)Alexander Scriabin 1872-1915 Some relevant facts about Scriabin are: He was Russian – he was born and died in Moscow. He was a child prodigy of the piano, and a great admirer of Chopin. His piano and orchestral compositions are finely crafted, the latter uniting aesthetics with religion. Both are naturally laced with the Russian temperament, and show an embrace of the harmonic revolution of his time. The prelude (Op.9 No.1) is an early piece exhibiting Scriabin's melodic flair. It's form is a kind of condensed sonata – ABA with a coda. The 'B' section of roving, moderately distant, harmonies, and the 'coda' with its binding bass line are equal to the theme, as they should be. I am very fond of the tremolo style, and here it highlights the marvelous counterpoint of the piece.

Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.742404 Composed by Matteo Carcassi. Arranged by Arte Nova Music Lab. Concert,Romantic Period,Standards,World. Individual part. 3 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #3007597. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742404). Carcassi was born in Florence, Italy, and first studied the piano, but learned guitar when still a child. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuosoconcert guitarist. He moved to Germany in 1810, gaining almost immediate success. In 1815, he was living in Paris, earning his living as a teacher of both the piano and the guitar. On a concert tour in Germany in 1819, he met his friend Antoine Meissonnier for the first time. Also a famous guitarist, Meissonnier published many of Carcassi's works in his Paris publishing house. For Meissonnier he also arranged a number of popular songs for guitar that were originally written for piano, including works by Théodore Labarre and Loïsa Puget. From 1820 on, Carcassi spent the majority of his time in Paris. In 1823, he performed an extremely successful series of concerts in London that earned him great fame, both as a performing artist and as a teacher. However, in Paris, a long time passed before his talents were truly recognized, partly because of the presence of Ferdinando Carulli.Carcassi was in Germany again during autumn 1824. Afterwards he performed in London, where his reputation now gave him access to more prestigious concert halls. Finally he returned to Paris. For several years, he made concert trips from here to the most important cultural towns of Europe, including London. After a short return to performing in 1836, he quit his concert practice around 1840 and died in Paris in 1853. Taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matteo_Carcassi

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.914739 Composed by Sol Paul Levy (1881-1920). Arranged by Eric J Roth. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Individual part. 6 pages. Eric J Roth #4593125. Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914739). 6 pages (2 pages of music) formatted for 8.5x11 printing.Sol Paul Levy, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1881, was a composer, arranger and performer of silent film music. He attended All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland and served as first clarinetist in bands led by John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor. Levy led the foreign orchestrating department for Victor Records – which was the first music company to produce the disc record – and was a founder of Belwin Music. Levy compiled a series of photoplay cues for piano that was published in H.S. Gordon’s 1914 Motion Picture Collection. He also wrote songs, the most famous of which was That Naughty Waltz. Sol Paul Levy died in New York in 1920. During the Silent Film Era (1896-1936), showings usually featured live music, which helped to provide dramatic and emotional cues for the audience. The first public silent film shown in 1895 was accompanied by a guitarist. Soon after, films were commonly accompanied by either a pianist, organist, or chamber orchestra. Accompanists often improvised or compiled music from the classical, theatrical or popular repertories using a cue sheet identifying the effects or moods to be conveyed. While some films produced full scores or detailed cue sheets containing excerpts of music unique to that film, a repertoire of generic music soon developed to provide accompanists with music that they could adapt as needed. With titles such as Dramatic Conflict, Dramatic Tension, Heavy Mysterioso, and Weird Oriental Theme, Sol Paul Levy’s scores clearly served this purpose. The Vampire: A Dramatic Theme, composed in 1917, could have been easily adapted to any of the more than twenty films about vampires that appeared between 1909 and 1930. The score exists in three versions: one for small orchestra with piano conductor, one for chamber orchestra without piano, and one for chamber orchestra without timpani. Instruments included piano, flute, clarinet, two cornets, trombone, two timpani, two violins, viola, cello, and bass. Despite being composed for small orchestra, the piece, composed in A minor, is well suited to the guitar once instrumental and octave doublings are removed. While a solo guitar cannot produce the power and volume of a chamber orchestra, it certainly can evoke the intended mood. Except in a few instances owing to the limitations of the guitar, all original dynamic markings have been retained. All fingerings, of course, are editorial. Please note that some of the fingerings in the score may differ than those used in the linked YouTube Video.

Guitar - Intermediate - Digital Download SKU: ZY.DO-1522 Composed by Francis Bebey. Arranged by Ingrid Riollot. Score. 5 pages. Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) #DO 1522. Published by Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) (ZY.DO-1522). Son originalité continue de résonner dans le monde entier depuis son décès àla fin du mois de mai 2001.Francis Bebey was born in Douala in July 1929, into a large family where his father, a pastor, struggled to feed his children. But Francis had the opportunity to go to school. Admiring his elder brother, Marcel Eyidi Bebey, he educated himself, distinguished himself, and eventually received a scholarship to go and take his baccalaureate in France. We approached the end of the 1950s when he arrived in La Rochelle. More than ever, in this France where Africans were looked at with curiosity, condescension, or disdain, Francis relied on his intellectual resources. A diligent worker, he obtained his Baccalaureate, then moved to Paris where he started English studies at the Sorbonne. One day, he knew what truly attracted him: he wanted to do radio. Francis learned his craft in France and in the USA.After working for a few years as a reporter, he was hired in 1961 as an international civil servant in the UNESCO Information Department. In parallel, Francis had always been drawn to musical creation. His very serious daytime activity didnâ??t prevent him from frequenting jazz clubs in the evenings. In Paris, the Jazz, the trendy music of that time, but also rumba and salsa attracted him. He collected records and attended numerous concerts. With his accomplice Manu Dibango, Francis took the stage and played music.Francis liked classical music since his childhood. He grew up listening to the cantatas and oratorios of Bach or Handel that his father had sung in the temple. He became passionate about the guitar, impressed by the Spanish and South American masters, and decided to learn to strum the instrument himself. He started composing guitar pieces, blending the various influences that flow through him with the traditional African music he had carried within since childhood. His approach captivated the director of the American Cultural Center (then located in the Saint-Germain neighborhood of Paris), who offered him the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Francis gave his first guitar recital there (1963) in front of a mesmerized audience. His first solo album was released shortly thereafter.Gradually, Francis became recognized as a musician and composer. Several albums of the African guitar ambassador, as described by the press, were released. He also wrote books, to the point that his artistic career became challenging to reconcile with his career as a civil servant. In 1974, even though he had become the General Manager in charge of music at UNESCO, he took the bold leap and resigned from this prestigious institution to dedicated himself to the three activities that interested him: music, literature, and journalism. He explored the traditional musical heritage of the African continent, notably through the thumb piano sanza, and the polyphonic music of the Central African pygmies, or singing in his native language and composing humoristic songs in French!Success followed. Francis Bebey traveled the world: from France to Brazil, Cameroon to Sweden, Germany to the Carribean, or Morocco to Japan... the list of countries where he was invited to perform, gives lectures, or meets readers is very long. In addition to public recognition, he enjoyed the recognition of his fellow musicians, such as guitarist John Williams or Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, who invited him to be a part of the jury for a classical guitar competition in Caracas. His life was the journey of an African pioneer, a man rooted in his cultural heritage and carrying a message of sharing and hope for the world. His originality continues to vibrate around the world since his passing at the end of May 2001.

Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899139 Composed by Bella Bartok. Arranged by Rod Whittle. Folk. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #4349077. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899139). for solo classical guitar 4 pp (7 min.)BELA BARTOK Welcome to the enchanting world of Bartok’s folk music. These pieces have been transcribed from arrangements for flute and guitar. Bela Bartok, considered one of the 20th century’s most important composers, was born in Hungary in 1881. A prodigy, he was a professor at the Budapest Music Academy by the age of 26. His interest in traditional music led him to make many journeys (with his colleague Zolta Kodaly) through Hungary, Romania and Slovakia collecting songs and dances, the styles of which were synthesised into compositions of his own. He emigrated to the USA in 1940 where he died five years later of leukaemia. The pieces are deceptively simple, and it would be a mistake to take their natural forms, clear melodies, tonal harmonies and strong rhythms as an invitation to play inattentively. Quite the contrary. They stand any amount of playing, but only when the composing is heeded, the dynamics observed, and modulations anticipated.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1261509 Composed by Antonio Jiménez Manjón. Arranged by Rui Namora. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Individual part. 11 pages. Rui Namora #854571. Published by Rui Namora (A0.1261509). This beautiful étude, originally written for the 11-string guitar (7+4) that Antonio Manjón used, is practically unknown today. Although it was composed as an étude for this instrument, this arrangement for the 6-string guitar doesn't fail to capture its beauty. The 7-string version is faithful to the original, regarding the bass notes. This set includes a new engraving of the original in double staff and both 6 and 7 string guitar standard notation. Antonio Jimenéz Manjón (1866-1919)Antonio Jiménez Manjón was a Spanish guitarist born in 1866 in the Andalusian city of Villacarillo. Blind from an early age, he began his musical career at the age of twelve, performing in Spain and Portugal, where he played for the Portuguese King Fernando II.Soon after, the young Antonio traveled to Paris alone, where he studied violin at the Conservatory while pursuing his guitar career. He was surrounded by musicians such as Gounod, Saint-Saëns, and Sarasate. In 1887, Manjón returned to his home country and was invited by the Spanish monarchs to perform in the Royal Palace. During those years, he toured Europe with his Torres eleven-string guitar. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899142). for solo classical guitar 2 ppBenvenuto Terzi Benvenuto Terzi was born in Bergamo, Italy in 1892. A virtuoso guitarist and composer of numerous distinguished guitar pieces, his career flourished in the period between the two world wars, when he gave concerts in all major cities of Italy. In 1934 he co-founded the magazine 'La Chitarra'. In 1963 the publishing house Ricordi issued Terzi's book, 'The Self-taught Guitarist, A Comprehensive Approach to Classical Guitar'. The publication had numerous reprints. Terzi died in Bergamo in 1980, at the age of 88 years. I have changed the beautiful Trillo – Tremolo to a tremolo piece which suggests the trills, in order to make it more widely playable. It keeps all the subtle harmonic inferences of the original without the frustration of needing rarefied ability to play.

Solo Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.742405 Composed by Luigi Legnani. Arranged by Arte Nova Music Lab. Concert,Romantic Period,World. Individual part. 2 pages. Arte Nova Music Lab #3008973. Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742405). Luigi Rinaldo Legnani (7 November 1790 – 5 August 1877) was an Italian guitarist, singer, composer and luthier.[1]Born in Ravenna, Legnani was trained as a string player while very young but dedicated himself to guitar and voice. His debut as an operatic tenor was in Ravenna in 1807; his singing career spanned 17 years.[2] His career as a guitarist began with a concert in Milan in 1819; with his concerts in 1822 concerts in Vienna and return visits in 1833 and 1839 he tried to continue the guitar tradition established there by Mauro Giuliani.[3]Legnani is perhaps best known for his 36 Caprices op. 20 for the guitar, which cover all the major and minor keys, and which were probably inspired by Paganini's 24 Caprices for the violin. He and Paganini were friends from the 1830s; while it was once thought that he and Paganini performed together in public (Powroźniak mentions a concert in Northern Italy in 1837),[4] there is no evidence to support this claim. After the 1850s Legnani retired from active performance and became an instrument maker, concentrating on guitars and violins. The Legnani model guitar was popular in Central Europe through the middle of the nineteenth century.Legnani composed some 250 works, which were published in his lifetime throughout many of the major publishing houses in Europe. He died in Ravenna.

Catharina Josepha Pratten (15 November 1824 – 10 October 1895) was a German guitar virtuoso, composer, and teacher, also known as Madame Sidney Pratten. She was born Catharina Josepha Pelzer in Mülheim on 15 November 1824, the daughter of the German guitarist and music teacher Ferdinand Pelzer. On 24 September 1854, she married the English flautist Robert Sidney Pratten.Catharina began touring in Europe from the age of eight, and by 1844 was well known in England as a composer and guitar teacher. Her pupils included Queen Victoria’s daughters Louise, Princess of Wales and Beatrice, and the actor, singer, guitarist, and composer Ernest Shand. She composed some 250 works, most of them for solo guitar or voice and guitar. Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.971659 Composed by Jeffrey Hoover. 20th Century,Contemporary. Individual part. 11 pages. Musicart Publications #5793861. Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971659). Blue Wizard is inspired by American Jazz, Blues, and Flamenco traditions. For solo classical guitar, it is 6 minutes in length. The work begins as a Blues, with its familiar twelve-measure form and phrasing, but rapidly moves into a musical fantasy based on five-tone and modal scales heard in jazz. The music continues to travel through a variety of moods, colors, and textures. Ideas return and are transformed. The closing section of Blue Wizard possesses a dancing quality, with a final push to the end. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an interpretive painting Blue Wizard, painted by the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 25 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. His paintings are seen in exhibitions and in concerts where his paintings are projected while musicians perform his music. Hoover’s background as a performer includes both classical and jazz music, as saxophonist and conductor. His book The Arts and Society: Making New Worlds is published by Kendall Hunt Publishing.Hoover was born on September 11, 1959, in Anderson, Indiana. He holds a Ph.D. in Fine Arts (Composition and Interdisciplinary Fine Arts) from Texas Tech University, as well as an M.M. and Bch.Sc. from Ball State University. Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899152 Composed by Maurice Ravel. Arranged by Rod Whittle. 20th Century. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #5957569. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899152). Arranged for solo classical guitar 4 pp intermediate difficulty Maurice Ravel (1875 -1937) Ravel was born in the Basque region of France and much of his work shows a Spanish influence (this, together with his interest in jazz has produced some exceptional guitar transcriptions). He was a pupil of Faure and at first fell, like many contemporary composers, under Debussy's spell. However, his ascetic and intellectual bents produced from the start a refinement of composition and orchestration, and development of melody, all his own. Later music shows a fondness for the rhythmic features of jazz, and thoughtful incorporation of the innovations of modern music – strong dissonance, atonality etc. Piece en Forme de Habenera is from the 'Rapsodie espagnole', written for orchestra in 1907. Habenera is a Cuban dance that came to Spain in the mid-19th century and named after Havana (Habana).
