Solo Guitar - Level 4 - SKU: A0.914746 Composed by Auguste Franchomme (1808-1884). Arranged by Eric J Roth. Romantic Period. Individual part. 10 pages. Eric J Roth #5178787. Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914746). Auguste Franchomme was one of the most well-known and respected cellists in 19th century France. He was born in 1808 in Lille and went on to have a long, celebrated career in Paris as a performer, teacher and composer. Of the three pieces arranged here for guitar, one is drawn from the Twelve Caprices, Op. 7 and two are from the Twelve Etudes, Op. 35. The Caprice, No. 9, Larghetto con dolore, retains its original key of B minor. Etudes, No. 5, Allegretto, and No. 6, Andante con moto, have been transposed to new keys. All transfer well to the guitar, offering novel textures while still seeming idiomatic to the instrument. .

Guitar - Intermediate - SKU: ZY.DO-1522 Composed by Francis Bebey. Arranged by Ingrid Riollot. Score. 5 pages. Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) #DO 1522. Published by Les Editions Doberman-Yppan (digital) (ZY.DO-1522). Son originalité continue de résonner dans le monde entier depuis son décès à la fin du mois de mai 2001.Francis Bebey was born in Douala in July 1929, into a large family where his father, a pastor, struggled to feed his children. But Francis had the opportunity to go to school. Admiring his elder brother, Marcel Eyidi Bebey, he educated himself, distinguished himself, and eventually received a scholarship to go and take his baccalaureate in France. We approached the end of the 1950s when he arrived in La Rochelle. More than ever, in this France where Africans were looked at with curiosity, condescension, or disdain, Francis relied on his intellectual resources. A diligent worker, he obtained his Baccalaureate, then moved to Paris where he started English studies at the Sorbonne. One day, he knew what truly attracted him: he wanted to do radio. Francis learned his craft in France and in the USA.After working for a few years as a reporter, he was hired in 1961 as an international civil servant in the UNESCO Information Department. In parallel, Francis had always been drawn to musical creation. His very serious daytime activity didnâ??t prevent him from frequenting jazz clubs in the evenings. In Paris, the Jazz, the trendy music of that time, but also rumba and salsa attracted him. He collected records and attended numerous concerts. With his accomplice Manu Dibango, Francis took the stage and played music.Francis liked classical music since his childhood. He grew up listening to the cantatas and oratorios of Bach or Handel that his father had sung in the temple. He became passionate about the guitar, impressed by the Spanish and South American masters, and decided to learn to strum the instrument himself. He started composing guitar pieces, blending the various influences that flow through him with the traditional African music he had carried within since childhood. His approach captivated the director of the American Cultural Center (then located in the Saint-Germain neighborhood of Paris), who offered him the opportunity to perform in front of an audience. Francis gave his first guitar recital there (1963) in front of a mesmerized audience. His first solo album was released shortly thereafter.Gradually, Francis became recognized as a musician and composer. Several albums of the African guitar ambassador, as described by the press, were released. He also wrote books, to the point that his artistic career became challenging to reconcile with his career as a civil servant. In 1974, even though he had become the General Manager in charge of music at UNESCO, he took the bold leap and resigned from this prestigious institution to dedicated himself to the three activities that interested him: music, literature, and journalism. He explored the traditional musical heritage of the African continent, notably through the thumb piano sanza, and the polyphonic music of the Central African pygmies, or singing in his native language and composing humoristic songs in French!Success followed. Francis Bebey traveled the world: from France to Brazil, Cameroon to Sweden, Germany to the Carribean, or Morocco to Japan... the list of countries where he was invited to perform, gives lectures, or meets readers is very long. In addition to public recognition, he enjoyed the recognition of his fellow musicians, such as guitarist John Williams or Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, who invited him to be a part of the jury for a classical guitar competition in Caracas. His life was the journey of an African pioneer, a man rooted in his cultural heritage and carrying a message of sharing and hope for the world. His originality continues to vibrate around the world since his passing at the end of May 2001.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1261509 Composed by Antonio Jiménez Manjón. Arranged by Rui Namora. 19th Century,Classical,Romantic Period. Individual part. 11 pages. Rui Namora #854571. Published by Rui Namora (A0.1261509). This beautiful étude, originally written for the 11-string guitar (7+4) that Antonio Manjón used, is practically unknown today. Although it was composed as an étude for this instrument, this arrangement for the 6-string guitar doesn't fail to capture its beauty. The 7-string version is faithful to the original, regarding the bass notes. This set includes a new engraving of the original in double staff and both 6 and 7 string guitar standard notation. Antonio Jimenéz Manjón (1866-1919)Antonio Jiménez Manjón was a Spanish guitarist born in 1866 in the Andalusian city of Villacarillo. Blind from an early age, he began his musical career at the age of twelve, performing in Spain and Portugal, where he played for the Portuguese King Fernando II.Soon after, the young Antonio traveled to Paris alone, where he studied violin at the Conservatory while pursuing his guitar career. He was surrounded by musicians such as Gounod, Saint-Saëns, and Sarasate. In 1887, Manjón returned to his home country and was invited by the Spanish monarchs to perform in the Royal Palace. During those years, he toured Europe with his Torres eleven-string guitar. In 1893, he crossed the Atlantic to the Americas, settling in Buenos Aires in 1902 after performing and teaching in several Latin American countries. In Argentina, he founded a conservatory and published his work Escuela de Guitarra.Antonio Jiménez Manjón passed away in 1919 in Buenos Aires.ISMN 979-0-9007524-5-1 Â

Published by Arte Nova Music Lab (A0.742404). Carcassi was born in Florence, Italy, and first studied the piano, but learned guitar when still a child. He quickly gained a reputation as a virtuosoconcert guitarist. He moved to Germany in 1810, gaining almost immediate success. In 1815, he was living in Paris, earning his living as a teacher of both the piano and the guitar. On a concert tour in Germany in 1819, he met his friend Antoine Meissonnier for the first time. Also a famous guitarist, Meissonnier published many of Carcassi's works in his Paris publishing house. For Meissonnier he also arranged a number of popular songs for guitar that were originally written for piano, including works by Théodore Labarre and Loïsa Puget. From 1820 on, Carcassi spent the majority of his time in Paris. In 1823, he performed an extremely successful series of concerts in London that earned him great fame, both as a performing artist and as a teacher. However, in Paris, a long time passed before his talents were truly recognized, partly because of the presence of Ferdinando Carulli.Carcassi was in Germany again during autumn 1824. Afterwards he performed in London, where his reputation now gave him access to more prestigious concert halls. Finally he returned to Paris. For several years, he made concert trips from here to the most important cultural towns of Europe, including London. After a short return to performing in 1836, he quit his concert practice around 1840 and died in Paris in 1853. Taken from https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Matteo_Carcassi

Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899143). for solo classical guitar 2ppAlexander Scriabin 1872-1915 Some relevant facts about Scriabin are: He was Russian – he was born and died in Moscow. He was a child prodigy of the piano, and a great admirer of Chopin. His piano and orchestral compositions are finely crafted, the latter uniting aesthetics with religion. Both are naturally laced with the Russian temperament, and show an embrace of the harmonic revolution of his time. The Opus 11 preludes are early pieces exhibiting Scriabin's melodic and harmonic flair. The form of No 4 is binary, with a surprising, very expressive and poignant coda. No 5 could be described as a theme (with a prominent ninth) followed by two variations. The first variation ends with a bridging section that briefly changes tempo. maggie creek music

Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899141). for solo classical guitar 2ppAlexander Scriabin 1872-1915 Some relevant facts about Scriabin are: He was Russian – he was born and died in Moscow. He was a child prodigy of the piano, and a great admirer of Chopin. His piano and orchestral compositions are finely crafted, the latter uniting aesthetics with religion. Both are naturally laced with the Russian temperament, and show an embrace of the harmonic revolution of his time. The prelude (Op.11 No.4) is an early piece exhibiting Scriabin's melodic and harmonic flair. The form is binary, with a surprising, very expressive and poignant coda.

Solo Guitar - SKU: A0.899137 Composed by Giulio Regondi. Arranged by Rod Whittle. Romantic Period. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #4349081. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899137). for solo classical guitar (tremolo) 4 pp (7 min.)GIULIO REGONDI (1823 - 72) Regondi was born in Switzerland, but lived in France and, mostly, the United Kingdom. He was a child prodigy of the guitar, with Fenando Sor dedicating a piece to him when he was just nine. He composed for the guitar and also the concertina. His works for solo guitar comprise etudes, a set of variations and some larger compositions. The tremolo section of the Nocturne (op.19) - subtitled 'Reverie' – must be some of the most wonderful music written for tremolo guitar. In the Nocturne it is split between sections of different style and content, but its effectiveness as a piece is fully satisfied without these interspersed parts, nice as they are, and its persuasive theme quite naturally repeats to end with a superb coda (which also finishes the actual Nocturne). The original score has no dynamics except for the end, and I have not added any. However, the piece is impossible to play without inferring some loudness, tempo and accentuation changes. There is that Romantic period element to it. I have added fingering. I like to settle into a barre position where possible – it often lets the bass accompaniment ring through (e.g. the D in the first few bars) and simplifies the playing. But it hardly needs saying that fingering, helpful if it is good, is a kind of curse if it is bad or just wrong, and it is never mandatory. It is always instructive with tremolo pieces to first play some of the top line (e.g. of the first few bars) without tremolo to properly reveal its melody. The style needs plenty of practice to achieve fidelity to this musical meaning; that is always the aim. Then listen carefully as the lower part is added. The bass is very important, as mentioned, but the harmonies of the broken chords are vital too. The Nocturne is brilliant counterpoint.

Both are naturally laced with the Russian temperament, and show an embrace of the harmonic revolution of his time. The prelude (Op.9 No.1) is an early piece exhibiting Scriabin's melodic flair. It's form is a kind of condensed sonata – ABA with a coda. The 'B' section of roving, moderately distant, harmonies, and the 'coda' with its binding bass line are equal to the theme, as they should be. I am very fond of the tremolo style, and here it highlights the marvelous counterpoint of the piece.

Solo Guitar - Level 3 - SKU: A0.899132 Composed by Maurice Ravel. Arranged by Rod Whittle. Contemporary. Individual part. 2 pages. Maggie Creek Music #3868243. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899132). For solo classical guitar; 2 pp; intermediate difficulty.Maurice Ravel (1875 -1937) Ravel was born in the Basque region of France and much of his work shows a Spanish influence (this, together with his interest in jazz has produced some exceptional guitar transcriptions). He was a pupil of Faure and at first fell, like many contemporary composers, under Debussy's spell. However, his ascetic and intellectual bents produced from the start a refinement of composition and orchestration, and development of melody, all his own. Later music, including the Concerto, shows his love of the rhythmic features of jazz, and thoughtful incorporation of the innovations of modern music – strong dissonance, atonality etc. Ravel wrote both music and lyrics for a number of songs including Trois Beaux Oiseaux du Paradis (Three Lovely Birds from Paradise - see below), composed in 1916 while he was posted in the French army during WW1, this at significant physical and mental cost (ref. Wikipedia). Thus the tragic lyrics arise from experience, and the music (Ravel was 40) is typically expressive and uncomplicated with the usual harmonic surprises.Three Lovely Birds from Paradise (English translation)Three lovely birds from Paradise(My beloved has to the fighting gone)Three lovely birds from ParadiseHave flown along this way.The first was bluer than Heaven's blue,(My beloved has to the fighting gone)The second white as the fallen snow,The third was wrapped in bright red glow.'Ye lovely birds from Paradise(My beloved has to the fighting gone)Ye lovely birds from ParadiseWhat bring ye then this way?''I bring to thee a glance of azure(Thy beloved has to the fighting gone)And I on fairest snow white browA fond kiss must leave, yet purer still.''Thou bright red bird from Paradise(My beloved has to the fighting gone)Thou bright red bird from Paradise,What brings thou to me?''A faithful heart all crimson red,(Thy beloved has to the fighting gone)''Ah! I feel my heart glowing cold…Take it also with thee.' Maurice Ravel (1914)

Joan Cererols (1618 – 1680) was a Spanish composer and Benedictine monk. Cererols was born in Martorell. He entered the choir school Escolania de Montserrat around 1626. Cererols took his first steps in music under the direction of Father Joan Marc, a famous organist. He is known today chiefly for a single villancico, the beautiful marizápalos a lo divino - SerafÃn que con dulce armonÃa . The marizápalos was a song with a special harmonic pattern that often served as a framework for improvisation. This arrangement is for guitar quartet and solo guitar (Guitar 5). The quartet parts are easy, the solo guitar part is more challenging. The piece is fascinating, at times a dialogue between the solo guitar and the quartet but at other times the quartet splits into two giving a dialogue between three groups.

Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899150). For solo classical guitar - 5 pagesFrédéric Chopin (1810–1849) Chopin was born in Poland but spent his twenty or so creative years based in Paris. With his supreme mastery of the keyboard and inimitable compositions for the instrument he became a luminary of the Romantic era. Afflicted early on by consumption, he worked with a tireless intensity to produce piano compositions both intricate and perfect, of every style and mood. Pears Cyclopaedia makes this discerning tribute: ‘A Chopin melody, limpid, transparent, singing, can be recognised easily by anyone, but his style gradually developed into something more subtle, more satisfying than pure melody.’ The Andante spianato (spianato means 'smooth') was composed in 1834 as an introduction to the Grande polonaise brilliante. The quiet introductory section of the Andante, in 6/8, is rounded by a chordal trio and a more processional 3/4. A serene middle section adds contrast, floating through upper octaves in quintessential Chopin style.

Published by Musicart Publications (A0.971659). Blue Wizard is inspired by American Jazz, Blues, and Flamenco traditions. For solo classical guitar, it is 6 minutes in length. The work begins as a Blues, with its familiar twelve-measure form and phrasing, but rapidly moves into a musical fantasy based on five-tone and modal scales heard in jazz. The music continues to travel through a variety of moods, colors, and textures. Ideas return and are transformed. The closing section of Blue Wizard possesses a dancing quality, with a final push to the end. As with other compositions by Jeffrey Hoover, there is an interpretive painting Blue Wizard, painted by the composer.Jeffrey Hoover's compositions- music ranging from soloist to symphony orchestra -have received recognition through the Universal Edition/SMP Press Contemporary Composition Award, the prestigious Trieste prize, the international Luigi Russolo competition, awards from Mu Phi Epsilon, the Lancaster Fine Arts Festival, grants, publications fellowships, and more than 25 commissions. He is a member of the ACME roster of Mu Phi Epsilon, recognized for distinguished achievement as a composer. One unique aspect of Hoover’s work is when he combines composition with his paintings, creating synergetic art that intrigues and captivate audiences and performers alike. This guitar arrangement is of moderate difficulty but I think well worth learning. The music is very expressive, and I have varied tempo and dynamics to enhance that, starting in slow triple time. To my ear the the second part concludes the piece well, so the arrangement does not return to the first ('minuet') part.

Worrall immigrated to New York as a child, and his biography is a classic American tale of energy and self-invention. After his family moved to Cincinnati, Ohio, around 1835, young Worrall left his occupation as a newsboy to work for a decorative glass cutter. At the same time, Worrall set about teaching himself to play guitar—and, eventually, painting, engraving, and design. In the 1850s, he published a popular tutorial, Worrall’s Guitar School, and his original compositions, with evocative titles like “Mexican Airs,” “Saint Louis Rondo,” and “Sebastopol—A Descriptive Fantaisie for the Guitar,” became part of America’s popular music canon.

British born Godfrey Barnsley was determined to construct his home on an acorn shaped hill in northwest Georgia despite being warned by his Cherokee neighbors that the land he chose to build on was sacred and that he would be cursed. He built the Italianate style house anyway and sadly many tragedies followed. One was the death of his close friend Col. Richard G. Earle who was killed by a Union sniper in May of 1864 as he rode in to warn the family of the approach of Sherman’s army. Col. Earle was laid to rest in the garden just steps from the back door. Years later the home was abandoned after the roof was torn off by a tornado… it quickly fell into ruins. Today, the lush English style garden and surroundings (but not the house) have been restored to their previous splendor and the site is frequently used for elegant weddings and social events. This musical impression of Godfrey Barnsley’s enchanted garden was released as a single on streaming platforms in July of 2024. The PDF includes detailed fingerings and interpretation in standard notation with tablature. There’s also a version with TAB available on this site. Luigi Rinaldo Legnani (7 November 1790 – 5 August 1877) was an Italian guitarist, singer, composer and luthier.[1]Born in Ravenna, Legnani was trained as a string player while very young but dedicated himself to guitar and voice. His debut as an operatic tenor was in Ravenna in 1807; his singing career spanned 17 years.[2] His career as a guitarist began with a concert in Milan in 1819; with his concerts in 1822 concerts in Vienna and return visits in 1833 and 1839 he tried to continue the guitar tradition established there by Mauro Giuliani.[3]Legnani is perhaps best known for his 36 Caprices op. 20 for the guitar, which cover all the major and minor keys, and which were probably inspired by Paganini's 24 Caprices for the violin. He and Paganini were friends from the 1830s; while it was once thought that he and Paganini performed together in public (Powroźniak mentions a concert in Northern Italy in 1837),[4] there is no evidence to support this claim. After the 1850s Legnani retired from active performance and became an instrument maker, concentrating on guitars and violins. The Legnani model guitar was popular in Central Europe through the middle of the nineteenth century.Legnani composed some 250 works, which were published in his lifetime throughout many of the major publishing houses in Europe. He died in Ravenna.
