Solo Guitar - Level 5 - Digital Download SKU: A0.987853 Composed by Robert M. Greenberg. 20th Century. Individual part. 21 pages. Robert M. Greenberg #115407. Published by Robert M. Greenberg (A0.987853). Preferred Contact Information: RMonteverdi@comcast.net Performing Rights Organization: BMI Website: robertgreenbergmusic.com Facebook Band Page: facebook.com/RobertGreenbergMusic Duration: ca. 21 minutes Year of composition: 1996 Program Note: I. Toccata/Hands of Steel II. Strum/Serenade III. O Tanenbaum (Toccata reprise) IV. Two-Part Contention V. John Doe VI. True Pluck A number of years ago, the great English guitarist Julian Bream told David Tanenbaum - the dedicatee of tonight's premiere - not to premiere a guitar work unless he knew for a fact it was the composer's second guitar work. Sage advice. The guitar is an instrument that gives up its secrets to a non-guitar playing composer only reluctantly. Indeed, the timbral, digital and chordal subtleties of this most subtle and intimate instrument are truly understood by the guitarist only. Pity the outlander who composes for the guitar for the first time! With this last thought in mind I had, until last fall, managed to avoid writing a guitar piece. However, even the most abject compositional coward will relent when a musician like David Tanenbaum asks for a piece and offers his assistance and critical judgement in its composition. So it was with PLUCK, composed between November of 1995 and January of 1996. Bream's advice notwithstanding, PLUCK is my first guitar piece. Tanenbaum is brave. The title, PLUCK, thus refers to both the action of plucking strings as well as pluck - bravery, grit, true grit. PLUCK is written in six interrelated movements. The first movement, Toccata/Hands of Steel introduces much of the essential pitch and harmonic material of the piece, as well as Flamenco-style rasgueado strumming which, try as I might, I could not resist using. Movement two, Strum/Serenade, explains itself in its title. Movement three, O Tanenbaum (a designation for which David has forgiven me) reprises the Toccata and describes, well, a sort of musical tree (David has forgiven me for this, too). Two-Part Contention is a combatative, argumentative movement that pits the treble strings of the guitar against the bass. Movement 5, John Doe is a lyric and mysterious moment of rest before the manic finale. Movement 6, True Pluck, is a fast, furious and virtuosic finale. PLUCK is dedicated, with greatest respect and affection, to my friend David Tanenbaum. May he only want to play my second guitar piece.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1234273 Composed by Johann Sebastian Bach. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Baroque,Christian,Classical,Country,Folk. Individual part. 7 pages. Richard Hirsch #829813. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1234273). I offer an arrangement of Bach’s all-time favourite Jesus, Joy of Man’s Desiring for solo acoustic or classical guitar. I have arranged the piece in 4/4 time in a folk-fingerpicking style giving it something of an American folk-country character, perhaps verging on a gospel. The arrangement follows the original as faithfully as possible with the melody and choral sections interwoven. I think the piece survives the time-change operation beautifully, retaining the joyful and praiseful character of Bach’s original. The piece is a joy to play and to listen to.The arrangement is accessible to intermediate to advanced students of acoustic or classical guitar. Any student of guitar who has mastered the basics of thumb-index-middle fingerpicking  (thumb, thumb, index, middle, thumb, index) will have fun with the piece.I give extensive left hand fingering accompanied by tabs as a guide to the intermediate students of guitar. Right hand fingering is given for the first playing of the repetitive passages and in passages where it might be difficult for the performer to find appropriate  fingering. Otherwise I expect the fingering to be more or less self-evident, leaving it to the individual taste and style of the interpreting guitarist.I have set the tempo to Presto for the arrangement to keep close to lively nature of the original, but the arrangement can also be played much slower, somewhere around Metronome 130. This results in a shift in mood towards a ragtime blues, verging on a spiritual. This great music is a never-ending source of inspiration. The piece is a nice follow-up to my folk-fingerpicking arrangements for Freight Train and The Entertainer.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1165227 By Judy Garland. By E.Y. Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. 20th Century,Broadway,Multicultural,Musical/Show,Standards,World. Individual part. 7 pages. Richard Hirsch #765578. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1165227). With inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement of the song Over the Rainbow for solo acoustic guitar. In my childhood The Wizard of Oz was one of my favourite fairy tales, especially as I spent a few of my early years in the little town of Winfield Kansas where tornadoes were a constant threat. I still remember huddling in the cellar with my mother and little brother when a tornado warning had been broadcast. With this in mind, the first part of the arrangement is meant to resemble a whirlwind that takes us up to the dreamland of Oz portrayed in the slower second part. In the third part, we come back down to waking reality in another mirror image whirlwind. The arrangement has an afro-flamenco character with two tiers of rhythm. Tier one is the normal 4/4 rhythm with accents at 1 and 3. Tier two consists of accents falling on beats 2 and 2& and 3& of the 4 beat measures. Tier two can be highlighted by clapping or tapping with a table knife on a bottle at beats 2 and 2& and 3&, with the strongest accent on 3& (an upbeat). The piece ends with a chord of natural harmonics on the 3& upbeat. The natural harmonics in the rhythmic fingerpicking resembling a kalimba (thumb harp) add an African touch to the piece. The piece is within reach of advanced intermediate students of fingerstyle or classical acoustic guitar. Besides the polyrhythmic fingerpicking, in the second dreamland part the piece offers the opportunity to play a broken chord of right hand harmonics, usually a real hit with listening audiences. I give suggestions for left and right hand fingering where I think necessary. The suggested tempo is presto for the fast first and third parts, but they could be played even faster for dramatic effect. The slow dreamland second part should be played with the melody floating lazily over the beat. The piece is a good follow up to my arrangements, also available at SheetMusicDirect and SheetMusicPlus of Freight Train and What a Wonderful World that use the same fingerpicking techniques.

Solo Guitar - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1264075 By The Police. By Sting. Arranged by Pablo Alcázar. Pop,Rock,Singer/Songwriter. Individual part. 3 pages. Pablo Alcázar #856983. Published by Pablo Alcázar (A0.1264075). This arrangement of Every Breath you Take (for solo guitar) fits perfectly for Classical (spanish) and acoustic guitars because every chord sounds fully along with the melody and the bass gives a unique feeling of the rhythm. It's made for solo guitar and it's appropiate for begginers that look for a challenge or intermediate guitarist that want something fresh and new to play. Also is a very good arrangement for professional players that need repertoire for wedding events.Every Breath You Take is a song by the English rock band the Police from their album Synchronicity (1983). Written by Sting, the single was the biggest US and Canadian hit of 1983, topping the Billboard Hot 100 singles chart for eight weeks (the band's only No. 1 hit on that chart), and the Canadian RPM Chart for four weeks. Their fifth UK No. 1, it topped the UK Singles Chart for four weeks. The song also reached the Top 10 in numerous other countries.Sting wrote the song in 1982 in the aftermath of his separation from Frances Tomelty and the beginning of his relationship with Trudie Styler. Their split was controversial. As The Independent reported in 2006, The problem was, he was already married – to actress Frances Tomelty, who just happened to be Trudie's best friend. Sting and Frances lived next door to Trudie in Bayswater, West London, for several years before the two of them became lovers. The affair was widely condemned. To escape the public eye, Sting retreated to the Caribbean. He started writing the song at Ian Fleming's writing desk on the Goldeneye estate in Oracabessa, Jamaica. The lyrics are the words of a possessive lover who is watching every breath you take; every move you make. Sting recalled:I woke up in the middle of the night with that line in my head, sat down at the piano and had written it in half an hour. The tune itself is generic, an aggregate of hundreds of others, but the words are interesting. It sounds like a comforting love song. I didn't realise at the time how sinister it is. I think I was thinking of Big Brother, surveillance and control..

Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1155054 By Louis Armstrong. By Bob Thiele and George David Weiss. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. 20th Century,Multicultural,Pop,Standards,World. Individual part. 8 pages. Richard Hirsch #755336. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1155054). Taking inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement in polyrhythmic 4/4 time of What a Wonderful World for solo acoustic guitar. The tune is really happy and up-lifting. If there are any little folks (kids two to four years old) around listening, they will have a hard time sitting still. My grandson (two and a half) really got going when I played it for him. I can hardly resist the urge to dance to the tune while playing myself! The arrangement is in the spirit of the Canarios by Gaspar Sanz for classical guitar and is meant to have the nature of a dance. The repetitive alternating thumb and index and middle finger cycle going through the broken chords with the melody woven in works to give the arrangement an almost hypnotic character. The fingering for the right hand is given in first section and is basically the same throughout the piece. The fingering for the left hand can, I believe, be easily figured out from the tablature. The arrangement is within the reach of intermediate students of the acoustic guitar; anyone who has mastered the basics of fingerstyle fingerpicking guitar, and can be played on both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars. The short and long glissandos and the arpeggios of natural harmonics resembling the kalimba (thumb harp) together with the drone effects of the enharmonic tones in the chords give an added dash of African spice to the piece.

Guitar - Advanced - Digital Download SKU: ZZ.DZ-4244 Composed by Konstantin Bliokh. Score. 13 pages. Les Productions d'OZ - Digital #DZ 4244. Published by Les Productions d'OZ - Digital (ZZ.DZ-4244). Sonata No. 6 Kharkiv for guitar solo was composed in 2021, in the end of the COVID-19 lockdown. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations. The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down. The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions. The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.

E-book. Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music #21665EB. Published by Mel Bay Publications - Digital Sheet Music (M0.21665EB). ISBN 9781619110991. 8.75x11.75 inches.Bill Bay asked me to write a follow up book to my last book, The Bluegrass Pickers Tune Book (20233). If you like Bluegrass music (232 songs) I'd recommend getting that book to add to your collection. The focus of this book, The Acoustic Source Book is on roots and old-time music. The book is focused on the time period from late 1800's until 1940's.There are a few songs from The Bluegrass Book that were too important to be left out. I decided not to use any patriotic and Christmas songs and came up with a list of about 400 songs which eventually was cut down to over 200. During the late 1800's and early 1900's there was an important evolution in American music; the birth of jazz, ragtime, and blues. This was also the period of the phonograph and early commercial recordings. Music from the Minstrel period as well as traditional songs were used as staple for the roots musicians. In the early 1900's there were rags, blues, gospel, Tin-Pan Alley, jug band, spiritual, old-time country and popular songs. I've tried to include some of the well-known songs from every genre to give you a big slice of Americana. There are some great songs that are popular roots, bluegrass and old-time songs today that have never been published. There are also great songs that are not well known that should be played and enjoyed.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899109 Composed by Richard Strauss. Arranged by Rod Whittle. 20th Century. Individual part. 2 pages. Maggie Creek Music #25787. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899109). 2 pages; for solo classical guitar; published by Maggie Creek MusicRichard Strauss (1864 -1949) Strauss's music amounts to a huge body of symphonic and operatic work written over 60 years. Full of vitality, endlessly melodic, brilliantly orchestrated, it begins and ends in the romantic tradition, but for the most part expresses something more modern and individualistic, not without controversy in its time. Variation of style and structure is drawn from the descriptive (literary) nature of compositions, and an extraordinary inventiveness enlivens the scenes, moods and situations. Strauss said once that he produced music the way cows give milk, and indeed his music rarely seems contrived. The opera Strauss wrote 15 operas on a variety of subjects and across the whole spectrum of drama. He acknowledged being enchanted by the soprano voice, and his writing for it highlights many of the works, including Adriane auf Naxos (composed in 1912). The opera has been described as 'sparkling', which sums it up well, and passages influenced by Bach, Mozart, Puccini, and Wagner add to the interest. The storyline is a play within a play, the second part being the mythological 'Opera' staged in the story. The three pieces transcribed* are from this Opera. The guitar arrangements All classical guitar pieces are compromises. The instrument has only six strings, the left hand four fingers able to be used, and with the right hand its rare to use more than three fingers and the thumb. So, despite the amount of noise possible, it's inevitable that passages occur where either harmony, bass or fragments of counterpoint that would be beneficial are left out. In particular, the higher up the neck music is played the simpler it tends to be, if harder to play, and unless the low bass is an open string there wont be any. So I think the main part of attaining a fair transcription (better to be called an arrangement if the original musical structure is not strictly followed, as in this case) is determining how a good compromise can be reached. Melody, counterpoint, bass and main harmonies demand inclusion, and register is important. One may generally assume the original score can't be improved on. However, if the music may sound well on guitar, and the above elements can be incorporated without the playing becoming very difficult, something enjoyable to play and worthwhile listening to should be able to be achieved. Overture; 'A golden time …' Here the Mozart influence, better, inspiration, is wonderfully evident. A gentle waltz time (only the first section of the overture is transcribed) carries the colourful harmonies, strong melodic threads and connecting flourishes that stamp both pieces. The aria is alluded to in the Overture several times, which as you would expect, is intricately woven with the hints themes later to be established in the Opera. It has a kind of 'jazzy' freedom, and it's always miraculous to me that composition so involved can retain its musical line, here done in Strauss's inimitable way. The aria, sung not far into the Opera, has the perfect inevitability of Mozart, but again it is Strauss. As explained, keys have been changed to suit the guitar. Chorus and Aria This selection from the finale has features well worth trying to translate. The device of having a strong chorus, in the style of a Bach chorale, stated and then counterpointed by a solo voice in a restatement, is potent, and that in the opera the chorus (of the three nymphs) isn't immediately followed by the accompanying aria (of Ariadne) means the latter comes as a moment of surprising beauty. Neither parts are complicated, and lovely arpeggios, a feature Strauss's music, often impart the assured progressions. A problem was to capture the distinct register o.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1444613 Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Folk,Instructional,Multicultural,Ragtime,Spiritual,World. Individual part. 13 pages. Richard Hirsch #1024507. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1444613). I offer an arrangement of the Spiritual “Rock My Soul in the Bosom of Abraham” for acoustic fingerstyle guitar. The arrangement is in the ragtime style of guitar playing reminiscent of Reverend Gary Davis. The melody is played with alternating middle, index, and ring fingers over alternating bases played by the thumb. The melody is repeated in different major keys starting in the key of D and moving through the keys of A , G, and C, returning at the end to D.The arrangement is intended as a fun instructional introduction to the various keys that are good for fingerstyle guitar with alternating bases in normal tuning. There are lots of little ornamentations like pulls-offs, slurs, and trills that liven up the piece and are good practice for the intermediate to advanced student of fingerstyle guitar.I have given Presto as the tempo as that is the tempo in which I first conceived of the arrangement, but the piece can also be played at a slower tempo, i.e. Allegro. In a number of instances in the notation harmonics are marked as sounding one or two octaves higher than notated. These notes are notated and tabulated at the position they are to be found on the fretboard. When played as harmonics they will sound one or two octaves higher. The piece would I think work well also in contexts where the guitarist might like to have some audience participation in the way of hand-clapping of the beat while moving through the various key changes. The piece also works well as a warm-up. I really enjoy playing the piece. It makes my day!

Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.924177 Composed by James R. Murray. Arranged by R.S. Carrier. Children,Christian,Christmas,Classical,Sacred. Individual part. 2 pages. Ralph scott carrier #3680995. Published by ralph scott carrier (A0.924177). The beloved Away in a Manger, known to children from two years of age and up. In the key of D (major,) a simple and well known melody. Note: Although I do consider this a simple little song, any thought that this is an unusually easy guitar arrangement would be a mistake. This is, in fact, a rather challenging arrangement, especially the way I have tabbed it. Measures 6 - 9 are particularly difficult. If you can find an easier way to finger it, more power to you. Some contradictory information has been found regarding the attribution of the opus. Some have suggested it was from Martin Luther (himself,) but others have said it was written for his 400th anniversary. But the hymn book I found it in (to copy the lyrics) attributes it to a James R. Murray, so I have also given him credit. It was first published in 1884, in any event.

Solo Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.942099 Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Contemporary,World. Individual part. 9 pages. Silver Sickle Publications #6227369. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.942099). Nadir (1994) is written for prepared guitar, a term usually associated with a piano in which certain objects have been placed on the strings in order to alter the conventional sound of the instrument. Many composers have written music for prepared piano, among them John Cage, who, according to Mr. Paraskevas, was the inspiration for his transferring of the same technique to the guitar. It is quite possible that nobody has used this kind of technique on the guitar before. After experimenting with various materials, he decided on the use of two metal paper clips, which he puts at specific locations on the fingerboard, so that they best produce the desired sound effect, a sound both harmonic and percussive. Nadir suggests the lowest point, here associated with the notion of death. The piece bears many programmatic references to the struggle between good and evil, life and death, musically portrayed in the persistent ostinato rhythms and the fragmented melodic phrases. Death cuts through in the form of an abrupt strike on the wood, the fingers continue to play but no sound is heard, until two more strikes make their movement stop. Little by little life and sound start again, but the final strike brings about the pessimistic message that fate and death predominate in the end. The piece ends with the inscription ...but sooner or later we live forever - a final optimistic touch. Nadir was the outcome of continuous experimentation on the capabilities of the guitar as an instrument, and all the potential sound effects that one can draw from it. ...Dr. Paraskevas, is an amazingly versatile guitarist. He conquers the many technical challenges of this repertoire with ease, he can sing with the purest tone (try the opening work, Alfonsina y el Mar, and see). What makes Visions of Azure a wonderful guitar CD rather than simply a good one is the last 18 minutes. The guitarist saves his own compositions for last, and if the ear is fatigued at this point in the recital. Paraskevas gives it good reason to wake up....I am sold on Paraskevas's playing, and do not think hunting down the alternatives is necessary. In short, this is an essential CD for those interested in modern classical guitar.

Composed by Traditional. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. Folk, Multicultural, Traditional, World. Individual part. 9 pages. Richard Hirsch #190297. Published by Richard Hirsch
A hard-hitting Flamenco guitar arrangement for Fandango de Huelva based on standard traditional themes. The Fandango de Huelva is a relatively fast and rhythmically strict Fandango compared to Fandangos from other regions in Andalusia (Granada, Ronda, Málaga, Almería) that are often slower and without a steady rhythm (sans mesure). Rhythmically, Fandango de Huelva consists of a repetition of a six beat phrase, that Flamencos refer to as a compás, with accents on the third and fifth beats (1 2 3 4 5 6). This is notated in the score as a repeated sequence of 4/4 and 2/4 measures with the first beat of the compás falling on the third beat of the first 4/4 measure. The first accented beat in the compás falls on the first beat of the following 2/4 measure and the second accented beat falls on the first beat of the 4/4 measure following. This asymmetrical distribution of accents in the phrase gives the Fandango a kind of choppy almost stop-and-go flow. Note the number of holds that occur in the melodic passages. These are signs of a feature of the Fandango that is used much more in the slower versions where the singer or guitarist can vary the rhythmic flow at will. The melodic passages in the piece are based on traditional songs for Fandango de Huelva, much as Brahms’ Hungarian Dances were based on traditional romani melodies from Hungary. The piece ends with a so-called Macho, a finale, in Verdiales, a fast Fandango rhythm from the region of Malaga. The Verdiales runs in standard 3/4 measures.I learned the Fandango de Huelva rhythm in my studies with Juan González “Triguito” in Madrid in the late 1960’s. I gathered further rhythmic and melodic material working with other Flamenco guitarists and singers, especially in El Mesón de la Guitarra just off the Plaza Mayor, during my years in Spain. The Fandango de Huelva is a fast and lively style (palo) of Flamenco with lots of good old-fashioned strumming (rasgueados) together with long continuous melodic passages. There is quite a bit of tapping on the face of guitar (golpes) in combination with the strumming and left hand legatos. Some passages are played with the thumb in alzapúa, meaning that the thumb strikes in triplets down, up, and down again in rapid sequence in combination with glopes. The alzapúa and tapping really add to the gitano-andalusian flavour of the piece. The last measures of the finale in abanico (fanning) rasqueado style are a powerful sendoff. Audiences have always enjoyed the positive spirit and energy that the Fandango de Huelva radiates.
