I composed my second guitar sonata in 2010. Guitar Sonata No. 2 in C major is six pages long, has two movements, and its estimated performance time is 8:30 to 9:00. The first movement, Inner Visions & Power Puffs, is a zippy sonata form opening with a 12-bar blues Theme 1. After a conventional modulating transition Theme 2 appears in the traditional key of G major. The title of the movement alludes to the Stevie Wonder album Innervisions and, of course, the Powerpuff Girls. The sonata form has a climax by way of three Bartok pizzicati on the dominant pedal to depict the girls defeating Mojo Jojo and putting him in jail. The second movement is a lullaby with variations. The lullaby is an original song I used to sing for one of my nieces to help her fall asleep. The complete sonata has been recorded by Daniel Estrem and is available on the Magnatune release Estrem Plays Lawson.http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/estrem-estremlawson/I played movement 1 at a Seattle Classic Guitar Society open mic in 2012 on a warm summer Friday night and there were kids playing and screaming in the background, which helped set the mood of the sonata rather than break it.

Guitar Sonata No. 5 in G major is open G tuning. It is in three movements and performance time is abut 10 to 10:15. Movements 1 and 3 are to be played using a glass or bronze slide worn on the fourth finger. The movements are:1. Hobo Spider Blues2. Ragged) and Sor(e) (after Sor's Op. 29, 10)3. Ricardo de YakimaThe first movement is a set of bottleneck technique variations on an original blues theme. Each variation explores different timbrel possibilities such as ordinary tone, pizzicato, sul tasto, and ponticello before recapitulating the original form of the blues theme.The second movement reconceives Sor's study in E flat from his Op. 29 as a ragtime sonata form, with a developmental intrusion from another Sor etude. This ragtime sonata leads attaca into the final movement.The third movement is another set of variations, this time on a two-step dance theme cast in the form of a menuet. It was common in early 19th century guitar sonatas to end with a menuet and so I opted to end with a menuet with variations. In sharp contrast to my first guitar sonata, which drew inspiration from late Beethoven piano sonatas and late Shostakovich string quartets, the inspirations here were Muddy Waters, Fernando Sor, Scott Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Don Helms.This sonata was also recorded by Daniel Estrem on Estrem Plays Lawson, which was released through Magnatune in 2016. .

Thomas Commuck (1804 to 1855) was a member of the Narragansett tribe and is considered the first NativeAmerican to publish a musical work using Western European notation. The work, Indian Melodies, is a shape‐notehymnal published as a contribution to the hymnody of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was published in 1845.Guitar Sonata on themes by Thomas Commuck is a traditional four‐movement work with an opening sonatamovement (Mooanam); a double variation form (Menominie and Susquehannah); a canonic minuet with trio (Pequot and Missouri; and a closing prelude with fugue (Flathead). The melodies are labeled as they appear throughout the score, though not always with reference to their original forms. This guitar sonata is a four-movement work in open D tuning throughout. The performance time is between 17 to 18 minutes. I worked on this sonata from 2016 through 2019 as an homage to Blind Willie Johnson. The movements are as follows.I. Andante (a fugue in triple counterpoint)II. ScherzoIII. Largo trionfante (a ragtime sonata whose recapitulation leads seamlessly into)IV. Variations on Restoration from William Walker's Southern HarmonyThe work is written in cumulative setting after the model of Charles Ives but in a Haydnesque homage to not just Blind Willie Johnson but also with musical tributes to Stevie Wonder, Bach (the triple counterpoint), Louis Armstrong and Lil Harden. The fourth movement is a bravura set of variations on the shape note hymn Restoration that is the foundation of the entire sonata, using bottleneck technique throughout as an homage to Blind Willie Johnson.Owing to the use of bottleneck technique and the open D tuning throughout this is a pretty tough sonata to play but it's fun to play and I've filmed myself playing through it to demonstrate its practicality in performance.

This is a single-movement, 8 page solo guitar sonata in F minor that I composed in 2000. My main inspirations were the late piano sonatas of Beethoven (especially Op. 111) and the late string quartets of Shostakovich (particularly No. 13). This is a very demanding work to play. Prescribed tempo should be no LESS than 152 bpm. The work is a traditional sonata form and includes large stretches as well as chords and melodies in harmonics played over continuously moving bass lines using conventional tones on the lower strings. .

I started composing this single-movement sonata for guitar on October 29, 2016 and completed it on May 11, 2018. As the title says, this is an homage to Stevie Wonder, one of my musical heroes. This is a roughly 12-minute single-movement that has original themes inspired by the chord changes from the synth break to Stevie Wonder's Living for the City.  The work is primarly in standard tuning but the performer must switch to the tuning E flat, A, D, G, B flat, E flat in the final page. The sonata may be played on classical, electric or acoustic guitar. Although this is not indicated in the published score between measures 236 and 260 you can introduce embellishments and four-measure cadenzas. I suggest inserted cadenzas between measures 255 and 256 as well as between measures 259 and 260.Â

The opening sonata form and the finale are based on the inversion and prime forms of a single gesture which saturates the sonata overall in a variety of obvious and disguised forms. The tone and style is mainly Haydn by way of Beethoven's Op. 111 piano sonata with interrupting allusions to Nikita Koshkin and Portishead sneaking in at different points of the sonata. This work was premiered at the Seattle Composers Salon on May 5, 2017 at the Chapel of the Good Shepherd. I composed Guitar Sonata No. 6 in A major as an homage to Scott Joplin for the centennial of his death. It is a fully traditional sonata form but composed entirely from original ragtime themes. The piece may be played with or without swing and has a few places where the performer can improvise or compose interludes or vary the first theme within the first structural repeat of the sonata. Performance time is roughly 7 minutes (give or take cadenzas, etc) and is five pages long.

This is a 7-page score for solo guitar in two-movements, both in C minor. The opening sonata-prelude has an exposition, development and recapitulation and uses two themes, both of which use the gesture of a rising second as either core thematic or accompaniment material. There are places indicated in the score where a performer can improvise embellishments or substitutions in the return of Theme 1 in the recapitulation. The fugue is written in three voices with a subject and countersubject. It has two expositions, the first based on the primary form and the second on a somewhat free retrograde form of the initial fugue subject. I use fragmented forms of the subject to create blues and 5/4 episodes after the grand stretto that signals the structural climax of the fugue. This work is pretty difficult but although I wrote it on classical guitar it may also be played on acoustic or electric guitars with whatever timbre modifications strike your fancy.
