This Valse is in homage to Manuel Maria Ponce. He was a great Mexican guitarist-composer Manuel MarÃa Ponce Cuéllar (8 December 1882 – 24 April 1948) was a Mexican composer active in the 20th century. His work as a composer, music educator and scholar of Mexican music connected the concert scene with a usually forgotten tradition of popular song and Mexican folklore. Many of his compositions are strongly influenced by the harmonies and form of traditional songs. This work, which I composed for a class in Romanticism while attending Eastern Michigan University, contains many aspects of neo-Romanticism, i.e. pentatonic scales, a plethora of added chords, jazz chords, chromaticism, artificial harmonics all. contained within an A-B-A format.

Pantaleón Enrique Joaquín Granados Campiña (27 July 1867 – 24 March 1916), commonly known as Enrique Granados in Spanish or Enric Granados in Catalan, was a Spanish composer of classical music, and concert pianist from Catalonia, Spain. His most well-known works include Goyescas, the Spanish Dances [es], and María del Carmen.Granados wrote piano music, chamber music (a piano quintet, a piano trio, music for violin and piano), songs, zarzuelas, and an orchestral tone poem based on Dante's Divine Comedy. Many of his piano compositions have been transcribed for the classical guitar; examples include Dedicatoria, Danza No. 5, and Goyescas.His music can be divided into three styles or periods:A romantic style including such pieces as Escenas Románticas and Escenas Poeticas.A more typically nationalist, Spanish style including such pieces as Danzas Españolas (Spanish Dances), 6 Piezas sobre cantos populares españoles (Six Pieces based on popular Spanish songs).The Goya (Goyesca) period, which includes the piano suite Goyescas, the opera Goyescas, various Tonadillas for voice and piano, and other works.Granados was a significant influence on at least two other famous Spanish composers and musicians, Manuel de Falla and Pablo Casals. He was also the teacher of composer Rosa García Ascot.

Key West Suite was composed in 2013 on commission from the Amaral Duo, Jorge Amaral and Mia Pomerantz. The three movements are inspired by various places in Key West, Florida, where I was serving as an Artist in Residence at the Studios of Key West in June 2013. I'm a Cuban-American born in Havana, and my influences include Cuban popular music (of course), Jazz, and the contrapuntal music of Bach and other Baroque composers. I think you can hear all of that in this piece. Jorge and MIa perform it beautifully on their CD, Key West, which I highly recommend. La Caroline, H. 98 (Wq. 117/36) is one of dozens of short character pieces of great charm written by the Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach (1714-1788), oldest son of Johann Sebastian Bach. As a composer, CPE Bach occupied an interesting transitional space between baroque and classical music and certainly helped to usher in the stylistic traits of the latter into general popular usage. The piece here is arranged for classical guitar solo at an intermediate level. It is more a transcription than a true arrangement, and every attempt has been made to keep the music as close to the original as possible. All fingerings are editorial, and most ornaments, except for trills, have been written out rather than notated with a symbol. However, many expert pianists embellish these ornaments (sometimes very lavishly), particularly on repeats, and expert guitarists will likely want to do the same. Since the original music was written an octave higher and to be played on the delicate-sounding keyboard instruments of the 18th century, some guitarists may want to experiment with using a capo to better create a more period-appropriate sound.Bach marks the tempo as Allegro ma con tenerezza (fast but with tenderness) and most keyboardists take it a moderate to quick tempo. On the guitar, which has a different resonance, the piece can also be convincing played at somewhat slower tempos, but certainly nothing slower than a true andante.
