Key West Suite was composed in 2013 on commission from the Amaral Duo, Jorge Amaral and Mia Pomerantz. The three movements are inspired by various places in Key West, Florida, where I was serving as an Artist in Residence at the Studios of Key West in June 2013. I'm a Cuban-American born in Havana, and my influences include Cuban popular music (of course), Jazz, and the contrapuntal music of Bach and other Baroque composers. I think you can hear all of that in this piece. Jorge and MIa perform it beautifully on their CD, Key West, which I highly recommend. John Chamley #882686. Published by John Chamley (A0.1292094). This is a festive and fun piece. It will probably take some preparing to play this up to speed if you want to play it fast. The chorus has a nice counterÂmelody in the bass. The main melody also switches octaves as you might hear a choir exchange parts between the different voices. The first verse stays in the main voice, then the 2nd verse moves up an octave, then down to the bass strings. A certain amount of syncopation will keep the fingers busy on the right hand. The left will need to handle a few stretches but nothing outrageous. A 1/2 barre is required at one point along the way.

Thomas Commuck (1804 to 1855) was a member of the Narragansett tribe and is considered the first NativeAmerican to publish a musical work using Western European notation. The work, Indian Melodies, is a shape‐notehymnal published as a contribution to the hymnody of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was published in 1845.Guitar Sonata on themes by Thomas Commuck is a traditional four‐movement work with an opening sonatamovement (Mooanam); a double variation form (Menominie and Susquehannah); a canonic minuet with trio (Pequot and Missouri; and a closing prelude with fugue (Flathead). The melodies are labeled as they appear throughout the score, though not always with reference to their original forms. Air On A G string is August Wilhelmj’s 1871 arrangement of the second movement of J. S. Bach’s Orchestral Suite No 3 in D major BWV 1068. The arrangement differs from the original in that the part of the first violins is transposed down so that the entire piece can be played on just the violin's lowest string (the G string, hence the name). In performance, that part is generally played by a single violin (instead of by the first violins as a group). This is however an arrangement of the original “Air†from the Orchestral Suite. Bach's third Orchestral Suite in D major, composed in the first half of the 18th century, has an Air as second movement. The music of the Air is written on four staves, for first and second violins, viola, and continuo. The interweaving melody lines of the high strings contrast with the pronounced rhythmic drive in the bass. I have followed this quite closely in the arrangement for guitar quartet in F major.

How change, as little as it may be, can lead us to a completely different future. This piece was my first conscious decision to explore my Argentinian and Latin American heritage, and intersect it with Western Classical Music, through the modification of the rhythm and duration of the notes from the original score by Bach.

La Sonate n° 6 Kharkiv pour guitare solo a été composée en 2021, à la fin du confinement lié au COVID-19. Ã? ce moment-là , ma famille et moi étions restés dans notre ville natale de Kharkiv (également connue sous le nom de Kharkov), en Ukraine, pendant près de deux ans. Nous considérions cette période de pandémie comme un désastre, mais nous avons réalisé plus tard que c'était en fait un moment plutôt heureux, car la guerre est arrivée dans notre pays quelques mois plus tard. Depuis 2022, une fraction considérable des 1,5 million de citoyens de Kharkiv ont quitté leur foyer, ceux qui sont restés vivent sous des attaques incessantes de missiles, et beaucoup ont été tués. Je voudrais dédier cette Sonate à la ville frontalière de Kharkiv et, surtout, à ses citoyens souffrant de la guerre.Pourtant, la musique de la Sonate n'a aucun programme spécifique. Ici, je donnerai un bref aperçu de ses principaux éléments de composition pour faciliter les interprétations futures.Les premier et quatrième mouvements de cette Sonate sont basés sur l'interaction entre le principe dodécaphonique et le centre tonal de sol majeur, naturel pour la guitare. En particulier, le premier mouvement est basé sur l'interaction de la triade de sol majeur Solâ??Siâ??Ré des cordes de guitare à vide 2â??3â??4, le motif ascendant 1 impliquant les notes Miâ??Fa#â??Laâ??Do# (à l'origine sur la première corde), et le motif descendant 2 utilisant les notes Miâ??Doâ??Sibâ??La (à l'origine sur la corde de basse 6). Ces éléments se complètent presque pour former douze tons (à l'exception du Fa manquant), et les motifs alternent avec des fragments ostinato où chaque note de la triade de sol majeur est déplacée pas à pas d'un demi-ton vers le haut ou vers le bas.Le deuxième mouvement est un Scherzo impliquant de nombreux demi-tons dans des accords accentués et des passages rapides, ainsi qu'un mouvement mélodique chromatique dans la voix de basse. Il est presque atonal dans certains fragments, mais a un centre tonal global de la mineur.Le troisième mouvement est un Adagio méditatif basé sur un thème composé dans l'échelle hexatonique Réâ??Miâ??Faâ??Sol#â??Laâ??Si et des accords ostinato impliquant les cordes de basse à vide Miâ??Laâ??Ré et le demi-ton Siâ??Do.Enfin, le quatrième mouvement est basé sur le thème dodécaphonique complet composé de deux phrases comprenant les motifs 1 et 2 du premier mouvement : Solâ??Faâ??Sibâ??Labâ??Doâ??Mibâ??Ré et Miâ??Siâ??Do#â??Laâ??Fa#. Ce thème est présenté dans ses formes prime et rétrograde. Il y a des dialogues entre la première corde, les basses et les cordes médianes à vide, similaires au premier mouvement. Ã? son apogée, le thème dodécaphonique est interprété en utilisant le mouvement parallèle de l'accord de sol majeur standard de la guitare avec les cordes médianes à vide sur douze positions.La Sonate a été créée en première et enregistrée (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) par le célèbre guitariste ukrainien Marko Topchii, qui a également vécu et étudié à Kharkiv. At that time my family and I were staying in our home city of Kharkiv (also known as Kharkov), Ukraine for almost two years. We considered that pandemic period as a disaster, but later have realized that it actually was a rather happy time, because a war came to our homeland just a few months later. Since 2022 a considerable fraction of the 1.5 millions of Kharkiv citizens have left their homes, those who stayed have been living under ceaseless missile attacks, and many have been killed. I would like to dedicate this Sonata to the frontier city of Kharkiv and, most of all, to its citizens suffering from the war.Yet, the music of the Sonata does not have any specific program. Here I will give a brief overview of its main composition elements to facilitate future interpretations.The first and fourth movements of this Sonata are based on the interplay between the twelve-tone principle and the G-major tonal center, natural for the guitar. Namely, the first movement is based on the interaction of the G-major triad Gâ??Bâ??D of the open guitar strings 2â??3â??4, ascending motif 1 involving the notes Eâ??F#â??Aâ??C# (originally on the first string), and descending motif 2 using the notes E-â??Câ??Bbâ??A- (originally, on the bass string 6). These elements supplement each other to almost make up twelve tones (apart from the missing F), and the motifs alternate with ostinato fragments where each note in the G major triad is step-by-step moved by a semitone up or down.The second movement is a Scherzo involving numerous semitones in accented chords and fast passages, as well as chromatic melodic motion in the bass voice. It is almost atonal in some fragments, but has an overall tonal center of A-minor.The third movement is a meditative Adagio based on a theme composed within hexatonic scale Dâ??Eâ??Fâ??G#â??Aâ??B and ostinato chords involving open bass strings Eâ??Aâ??D and semitone Bâ??C.Finally, the fourth movement is based on the complete twelve-tone theme consisting of two phrases including motifs 1 and 2 from the first movement: Gâ??Fâ??Bbâ??Abâ??Câ??Ebâ??D and Eâ??Bâ??C#â??Aâ??F#. This theme is presented in its prime and retrograde forms. There are dialogues between the first string, basses and open middle strings, similar to the first movement. In the culmination, the twelve-tone theme is performed using the parallel motion of the standard guitar G-major chord with open middle strings across twelve positions.The Sonata was premiered and recorded (CD Naxos No. 8.574630) by the prominent Ukrainian guitarist Marko Topchii who has also lived and studied in Kharkiv. I am extremely grateful to him for the brilliant performance of this piece.I am greatly indebted to Productions dâ??Oz for keeping my original notations in places where these do not conform to the publisherâ??s style.

It consists of five movements in which the former has a simple, school sonata shape, with two well-identifiable themes, one ethereal based on sets of bells and harmonics and another choppy, contrasting, in parallel ninth intervals, which are developed and subsequently reexposed at the end of the movement.The second movement is a slow time when the resonance of arpeggiated sounds is important. As will happen in the fourth half, the music conveys a sense of freedom, almost improvisation resulting from its unsympted writing and the irregularity of the measure. The third is a Scherzo in which humorous character is accentuated by the rapid descending and ascending glissandi. No less grotesque is the contrasting quote of Gaspar Sanz's Spaniard played in a singular way as will be seen in the interpretation, suddenly interrupted by the glissandi. The fourth is another slow movement in which resonances are also the center. Here you resort to obtaining a particular, harmonic sound similar to the sound of a gong, by placing paper clip on the three boards of the guitar. The fifth and final time is live movement in the form of a purr in which the different episodes are quotes from the themes appeared in the previous movements. The player says about this work: Work dated in 1994, virtuoso and contrasting, of resounding accessibility, not intending to reach the audience using easy resources but an admirable capacity for communication, Gioco is divided into five movements in which varied colours and textures occur and almost all the abundant classical and contemporary timbric resources of the guitar are exploited with intelligence, (controlled challenges, blows on the board, metallic vibration of a clip...), In this work one of the outstanding findings of its author is the alternative use in the Scherzando of his contemporary language and two recognizable literal quotations of the Aragonese Baroque guitarist Gaspar Sanz, which appear softly in an ironic and evocative loudness. Justino Losada wrote this review:Gioco, represents a continuous game of sonorities of very rich timbric nuances as well as an exacerbated game of frets (such as in its 3rd movement Scherzando), and abundant contemporary resources such as the microtonal vicinity of the detuned passages or the blows on the box for our interpreter to show of his skills, a task that although complicated he knows how to perform perfectly coming out of all difficulties. Rebullida's language is not simple, but the composer is clearly aware of the difficulties to reach a large audience, and to do so he polishes his language by seeking an exchange between modern and ancient sonorities in a continuous game creating a climate of warm and direct communication. Movements 1 and 3 are to be played using a glass or bronze slide worn on the fourth finger. The movements are:1. Hobo Spider Blues2. Ragged) and Sor(e) (after Sor's Op. 29, 10)3. Ricardo de YakimaThe first movement is a set of bottleneck technique variations on an original blues theme. Each variation explores different timbrel possibilities such as ordinary tone, pizzicato, sul tasto, and ponticello before recapitulating the original form of the blues theme.The second movement reconceives Sor's study in E flat from his Op. 29 as a ragtime sonata form, with a developmental intrusion from another Sor etude. This ragtime sonata leads attaca into the final movement.The third movement is another set of variations, this time on a two-step dance theme cast in the form of a menuet. It was common in early 19th century guitar sonatas to end with a menuet and so I opted to end with a menuet with variations. In sharp contrast to my first guitar sonata, which drew inspiration from late Beethoven piano sonatas and late Shostakovich string quartets, the inspirations here were Muddy Waters, Fernando Sor, Scott Joplin, Johnny Cash, and Don Helms.This sonata was also recorded by Daniel Estrem on Estrem Plays Lawson, which was released through Magnatune in 2016. .

The solos in this volume contain no time signatures or bar lines. I did this because I wanted the solos to be very expressive in interpretation yet free-form in structure. The companion recording presents my interpretation of these works. You may interpret them differently and that is fine! All solos are in notation and tablature. When writing these solos I first envisioned the form as an extended cadenza. However, from my earlier trumpet playing days I recalled that, especially in the 19th century, a cadenza was a momentary break in a solo which gave the performer a chance to dazzle the audience with his or her virtuosity. These solos are not about that. Rather, they are a vehicle to give the guitarist an opportunity to move the listener with the performer's expressive ability. I also thought of these solos in the form of a chant. However, most chants are monophonic in form and these solos in various parts present a fairly lush harmonic structure. While the solos were written for a 7 string guitar, they may be played successfully on a 6 string guitar. Alternate notes for those found on the 7th string are shown in the tablature part. Also, the solo, Peace, is written in Dropped D tuning and makes little use of the 7th string pedal tones. The solos are contemplative in nature and provide ample opportunity for individual expression and interpretation. I hope you enjoy playing and performing these works.

I composed my second guitar sonata in 2010. Guitar Sonata No. 2 in C major is six pages long, has two movements, and its estimated performance time is 8:30 to 9:00. The first movement, Inner Visions & Power Puffs, is a zippy sonata form opening with a 12-bar blues Theme 1. After a conventional modulating transition Theme 2 appears in the traditional key of G major. The title of the movement alludes to the Stevie Wonder album Innervisions and, of course, the Powerpuff Girls. The sonata form has a climax by way of three Bartok pizzicati on the dominant pedal to depict the girls defeating Mojo Jojo and putting him in jail. The second movement is a lullaby with variations. The lullaby is an original song I used to sing for one of my nieces to help her fall asleep. The complete sonata has been recorded by Daniel Estrem and is available on the Magnatune release Estrem Plays Lawson.http://magnatune.com/artists/albums/estrem-estremlawson/I played movement 1 at a Seattle Classic Guitar Society open mic in 2012 on a warm summer Friday night and there were kids playing and screaming in the background, which helped set the mood of the sonata rather than break it.

This guitar sonata is a four-movement work in open D tuning throughout. The performance time is between 17 to 18 minutes. I worked on this sonata from 2016 through 2019 as an homage to Blind Willie Johnson. The movements are as follows.I. Andante (a fugue in triple counterpoint)II. ScherzoIII. Largo trionfante (a ragtime sonata whose recapitulation leads seamlessly into)IV. Variations on Restoration from William Walker's Southern HarmonyThe work is written in cumulative setting after the model of Charles Ives but in a Haydnesque homage to not just Blind Willie Johnson but also with musical tributes to Stevie Wonder, Bach (the triple counterpoint), Louis Armstrong and Lil Harden. The fourth movement is a bravura set of variations on the shape note hymn Restoration that is the foundation of the entire sonata, using bottleneck technique throughout as an homage to Blind Willie Johnson.Owing to the use of bottleneck technique and the open D tuning throughout this is a pretty tough sonata to play but it's fun to play and I've filmed myself playing through it to demonstrate its practicality in performance.

Dedicated to world renowned guitarist David Russell, Peated Waltzes is a three-movement piece that pays homage to the peated whiskies of Islay, the southernmost island of the Inner Hebrides of Scotland. The opening movement, Earthy Smoke, Sea Salt and Iodine, attempts to portray the distinctive character of the single malts of that region. Based on the Gaelic folk song The Praise of Islay (Moladh na Landaidh), the second movement’s title comes from one the song’s last verses, O, may long their wild notes flow. The third movement’s theme was extracted from the letters of Laphroaig, one of the most iconic Scotch whiskies, whose name’s meaning inspired the title, By the Broad Bay. In the second part, the traditional Celtic melody, An Islay Pipe Reel, is quoted. At the end, themes of the previous movements are recalled and intertwined, as if trying to emulate the long and lingering finish of an Islay dram.Dédié au guitariste de renommée mondiale David Russell, « Peated Waltzes » est une pièce en trois mouvements qui rend hommage aux whiskies tourbés d’Islay, l’île la plus méridionale des Hébrides intérieures d’Écosse. This is the finale of my 'Eyeworth Suite' for the classical guitar, and it describes a tranquil, sunny afternoon by Eyeworth Pond in the New Forest, Hampshire, UK, and is written as a response to a seasonal cycle of four poems by my friend, the poet, David Dayson. The work is gentle and reflective but demands a high level of technique as a lot of it takes place around and above the twelfth fret. There will be no 'dusty bits' on your guitar after playing this one! :-)The whole suite is available either as single movements or as a complete work. The complete work is also available with tab. and consists of 'Prelude', 'Autumn', 'Winter', 'Spring' and this movement, the 'Summer Idyll' and intersperses two episocdic, lively movements between the two rhapsodic outer movements, with the doleful Winter in the middle - this does however, have a lively Yule Dance in 6/4 at its heart.

This Gigue is the finale of a four-movement sonata composed in 2018. Publication of the entire sonata is forthcoming. In the interim, I am offering three movements – the Passacaglia, Sarabande and Gigue – as single standalone works. I have performed them in my own concert programs both as part of the larger sonata and on their own. I believe that they work equally well both ways. The Gigue form is a lively dance in triple meter that stems from the Irish jig. It probably originated in England and Ireland in the 16th century. In the Baroque period and beyond, composers have often used gigues as the final movement of dance suites. The Gigue offered here is a galloping romp in 6/8 time with eighth notes running throughout most of the piece. It recalls similar gigues by the lutenist Sylvius Leopold Weiss (1687-1750) and the Tarantelle by Johann Kaspar Mertz (1806-1856). (The Tarantella is a similar lively dance form in triple time). Like the Passacaglia, the Gigue uses an E harmonic minor scale with an added (structural) B flat that helps to blur the sense of strict tonality. The second section includes hints of G and B tonal areas before returning to E minor to end the piece.

StarsTwo Fragments (2004) for guitar quartet was commissioned by and is dedicated to the Corona Guitar Kvartet for their tour of the USA in 2004-05.The work is cast in two very brief, aphoristic movements, each sharing the same material. The first movement, Strata, layers the four guitars on top of eachother in an aleatoric texture. In, the second movement, Stars, the guitars pass and develop material in a spare and expansive fashion – with ringing harmonicsrepresenting twinkling stars.This is a score for four players. Hence, four copies should be printed.
