Rachenica or Rachenitsa is one of the most famous Bulgarian folk dances. It is in a fast and lively tempo. This original composition for guitar trio used the different tapping techniques like tambour and knocking on the guitar body, imitating the traditional Bulgarian biggest drum, closely associated with that dance. The level of technical difficulty is Grade 3-5 It works well for concert performance as well as for fun. The tabs will be published soon.

This is the first movement from Suite Grandkids which contains six pieces originally scored for classical guitar trio, one for each of the grandkids that I had at that time (2005). This version is for classical guitar solo. Most of the notes are there. It is fun to perform as multi-tasking is required to play a percussion part with feet. The picture of my grandkids looks like a poster for cultural diversity. Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Riely's Dance was intended to present only African rhythms with no melody, but a rock n' roll middle somehow snuck in. The musical material for the arrangement is taken from standard traditional themes for the Soleares style of Flamenco. The arrangement is meant for guitarists and students of guitar that are new to Flamenco and want to learn the basics for one of the most important palos in Flamenco. The arrangement can be used to accompany a solo dance, customary in serious (jondo) Flamenco, often performed by a woman dancer. The Soleares rhythm consists of a repetition of a twelve beat phrase the Flamencos refer to as a compás where accents fall on the third, sixth, eight, tenth, and twelfth beats of the phrase (1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12). I notate the compás as a series of five measures that comprises two 3/4 measures followed by three 2/4 measures. Throughout the notation there is, therefore, a fluctuating between two measures in 3/4 and three measures in 2/4 time. The first beat of the compás falls on the second beat of the first 3/4 measure in the series and the first accented beat falls on the first beat of the second 3/4 measure. The sixth, eight, and tenth accented beats fall on the first beats of the 2/4 measures in the series. The twelfth beat falls on the first beat of the next series beginning with a 3/4 measure. Notating the compás in this manner allows the guitarist a total grasp of the underlying structure of the music, something that is often lost in other notations I have studied for Soleares. A command of the compás is essential for the guitarist to be able to work with Flamenco singers and dancers. The Soleares is a stately dance that moves at a moderate pace, but often ends in a finale (macho por BulerÃas) that is more than twice as fast as the first sections of the dance. The finale also contains a key change from the Phrygian mode of the llamadas and corridas to the key of E major. The arrangement contains essential basic techniques for Flamenco guitar, the rasqueado, the legato with hammering on, the four finger tremolo that rips at the strings before a full chord with the thumb, alzapúa where the thumb strikes in triplets down, up, down in rapid succession, etc. Students should dedicate themselves to a close and careful study of the notation to gain full mastery of these techniques. The arrangement consists of several sections, the llamadas which are calls to the dancer to take the stage, corridas where the dancer moves in a circle executing various heel and toe steps together with hand, arm, and body gestures, and the macho where the dance ends in a storm of stamping and a fit of wild abandon. The corrida sections consist of melodies Flamencos call “falsetasâ€. One of these is simply a series of broken chords while another is a melody taken from a song called “Caña†that is a member of the Soleares family. The notation ends, as is prescribed for the dance, on the tenth beat of the last compás (the first beat of the last 2/4 measure in the last five measure series). The Soleares was the first palo my maestro Juan González “Triguito†introduced me to in my studies with him in Madrid in the late 1960’s and is considered to be the “mother†of true forms of Flamenco. The title of the arrangement is in celebration of the beautiful patios of Córdoba, home of the Flamenco palo Soleares.

Taking inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement in polyrhythmic 4/4 time of What a Wonderful World for solo acoustic guitar. The arrangement has an afro-flamenco character with two tiers of rhythm. Tier one is the normal 4/4 rhythm with accents at 1 and 3. Tier two consists of accents falling on beats 2 and 2& and 3& of the 4 beat measures. Tier two can be highlighted by clapping or tapping with a table knife on a bottle at beats 2 and 2& and 3&, with the strongest accent on 3& (an upbeat). The tune is really happy and up-lifting. If there are any little folks (kids two to four years old) around listening, they will have a hard time sitting still. My grandson (two and a half) really got going when I played it for him. I can hardly resist the urge to dance to the tune while playing myself! The arrangement is in the spirit of the Canarios by Gaspar Sanz for classical guitar and is meant to have the nature of a dance. The repetitive alternating thumb and index and middle finger cycle going through the broken chords with the melody woven in works to give the arrangement an almost hypnotic character. The fingering for the right hand is given in first section and is basically the same throughout the piece. The fingering for the left hand can, I believe, be easily figured out from the tablature. The arrangement is within the reach of intermediate students of the acoustic guitar; anyone who has mastered the basics of fingerstyle fingerpicking guitar, and can be played on both nylon and steel string acoustic guitars. The short and long glissandos and the arpeggios of natural harmonics resembling the kalimba (thumb harp) together with the drone effects of the enharmonic tones in the chords give an added dash of African spice to the piece.

Indeed one runs out of superlatives trying to do justice to the quality and originality of his compositions and the abundance of output. Anyone learning about his relatively short life must also pay tribute to his resolve and courage. I've noticed during my time in bands that the music I like sparks creativity, and the lovely theme from the Kyrie of the Mass in C minor spawned a lot of ideas once I'd decided to write something for guitar using it. Mozart's harmonies seem both exclusive and perfect, and I can't imagine my musical life without them. I got to know the Mass when I looked after Nigel's place while he was away, as it was in his record collection. My good friend died (of bone cancer) not long after that, and the Fantasy is a homage to him.

Il avait grandi en écoutant les cantates et les oratorios de Bach ou Handel que son père chantait au temple. Il s'est passionné pour la guitare, impressionné par les maîtres espagnols et sud-américains, et a décidé d'apprendre à jouer de l'instrument lui-même.Il a commencé à composer des pièces pour guitare, mêlant les diverses influences qui le traversaient avec la musique traditionnelle africaine qu'il portait en lui depuis son enfance. Several albums of the African guitar ambassador, as described by the press, were released. He also wrote books, to the point that his artistic career became challenging to reconcile with his career as a civil servant. In 1974, even though he had become the General Manager in charge of music at UNESCO, he took the bold leap and resigned from this prestigious institution to dedicated himself to the three activities that interested him: music, literature, and journalism. He explored the traditional musical heritage of the African continent, notably through the thumb piano sanza, and the polyphonic music of the Central African pygmies, or singing in his native language and composing humoristic songs in French!Success followed. Francis Bebey traveled the world: from France to Brazil, Cameroon to Sweden, Germany to the Carribean, or Morocco to Japan... the list of countries where he was invited to perform, gives lectures, or meets readers is very long. In addition to public recognition, he enjoyed the recognition of his fellow musicians, such as guitarist John Williams or Venezuelan Antonio Lauro, who invited him to be a part of the jury for a classical guitar competition in Caracas.His life was the journey of an African pioneer, a man rooted in his cultural heritage and carrying a message of sharing and hope for the world. I tend to use a minimalist style that keeps the important parts of the music. This piece needs to be swung hard. It don't mean a thing, if it ain't got that swing! Very danceable piece. Legend has it that Ellington's orchestra would play this rhythm as long as the floor was filled with dancers! Another tried and true arrangement. Have fun with it! Sounds great on acoustic and electric guitars.

Their varied genetic backgrounds presented an opportunity to compose an eclectic suite with each piece presenting a style representative of their unique genetic heritage. Performance time for the entire suite is 23 minutes but each piece could stand alone on a concert program. Individual titles are: Riely's Dance, Ananlysia's Margarita, Toy for Timothy, Air for Chiara, Lullaby for Mirabai, and Soren's Jig. Here, I would visit my fine, longtime friend, Carlo Domeniconi and his friend, Justus Werden. They shared a house in Greiffenberg at the time.Carlo Domeniconi was my main teacher for composition and our visits would consist of working on ideas and pieces and also, long walks in the surrounding forest and fishing on the lake. Thus the movement names. Wind Dance is about the leaves flying through the forest in the autumn. PrefaceThese 20+ Baroque pieces are selected from the repertoires of various string instruments like Lute, Baroque Guitar, Viola da Gamba, etc. Some of the pieces are much better known than others, but they all are of a high musical standard very rewarding for the beginner guitarist. I have tried to keep the level of technical difficulty within the first three grades (1-3) of the classification observed in the annual syllabuses of British musical academies such as the Royal Schools of Music, Trinity College, Guildhall College, etc, of prescribed examination pieces for these grades.The Metronome markings are only editorial suggestions provided as general guidance but should not be taken too literally. This volume is divided into two sections. In the first section the pieces are given in ordinary notation and in decorated pages such as this one, without any fingerings or other technical help, but only for the pleasure of users who prefer a Baroque decorated appearance of books containing Baroque music. In the second section the same pieces are presented in undecorated pages and in double systems of notation pentagrams and tablature hexagrams in which the fingerings for every piece become obvious by the tablature and without further need for more left hand guidance. Therefore this book can be printed on paper either in its complete given form, or in any other page arrangement the user may prefer. Blank pages are provided for insertion at correct places for the management of left and right sides of a two-side view, but the volume has been designed with a paperless environment in mind where a tablet and a score reading application would be used.The thematic index is provided for general navigation withinthis electronic book.1 Clicking on any image in the index takes the user to the relevant decorated page of music, or clicking within the square frame number beside each image links the user to the corresponding tablature pages.2 Clicking on the title of any piece takes the user back to the index.3 Clicking on the header of the page is used for interchanging between decorated and undecorated pages.Socrates ArvanitakisLondon 2024.

Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1340077). I offer the famous Bourrée from Bach’s First Suite for Lute in E minor notated for solo acoustic guitar. The notation is accompanied by tablature and extensive left and right hand fingering as an aid to the student. The fingering aims to be as economical and as ergonomic as possible. If played according to the tablature and left hand fingering, the left hand flows smoothly from one position to another over the fretboard. This is especially important in the second part of the piece where Bach takes us on a tour of the harmonic space related to the key of E minor. The piece is a good introduction to the full potential of the fretboard as there are many alternative left hand fingerings, among which I have chosen those I feel fit together and enable flow best. Notice especially how the little finger plays an important role in guiding the left hand from one position to another. The fingering for the right hand is also good for the practice of alternating the index and middle fingers in the melody while the thumb plays the bases.This piece has become part of the standard repertoire for classical guitar, but is also a piece that sounds equally good on a steel string acoustic guitar. The steel strings make the piece sound like it is being played on a harpsichord. I first heard the piece as a boy of 15 back in 1960 in a recording by Chet Atkins playing on a steel string electric guitar!The piece has been transcribed from the original score for Lute and notated for guitar by many guitarists over the years. I hope my version contributes to its continued popularity, making the piece even more accessible and relevant to intermediate students of acoustic guitar.I have chosen a tempo of 130bpm for the notation which I think gives the piece a lively but not overly stressed quickness appropriate for a courtly dance.

Published by Socrates Arvanitakis (A0.1453811). Jan Antonin de Logy, count of Rosinthal (1650-1721) was an aristocrat of Bohemia and official of the Austrian empire. As a musician he was a lute player of professional level and seems to have been a refined and prolific composer of single pieces and suites in the French style for his instrument. His compositions are becoming known to us today through important academic research but a lot more work has to be made in this field. The present suite in Em has the following eight movements:1 Allemande2 Courante3 Sarabande La Favorita4 Double5 Gavotte I6 Gavotte II & (Gavotte I da capo)7 Menuett8 GigueNone of these dance movements is too difficult to play, but they are all musically rewarding and the compositional standard is kept high in all of them maintaining a two-part contrapuntal writing throughout the suite.In these editions I prefer not to add any fingerings because I consider that they obscure the optical result rather than clarifying any particular way of playing the music. Especially if tablatures are provided as is the case with this volume the suggested left hand fingerings become quite clear, but Instrumentalists can disregard these suggestions and provide their own fingering and choice of positions.Interactive thematic index has been provided for easy navigation to individual movements either in decorated or in tablature pages and back to the index.If a printed copy is desired, blank pages have been provided for insertion at will and for correct order of left and right side pages.MP3 of the music has been created using the Note Performer playback engine.

Beautiful, instantly recognizable melody. One of Benny Goodman's finer pieces. It was actually written by Edgar Samposon. Although it became Goodman's most recognizable pieces. This is a leisure swing piece, that is danceable. Pay close attension to your timng on this one and also make it swing! In a trio setting it's fun to improvise over the B section.This piece makes you stand out as a solo jazz guitarist of all idioms. Some chords are played as triads or dyads. I tend to use a minimalist style that keeps the important parts of the music. Tried and true arrangement. Sounds great on acoustic and electric guitars.
