Schott Music - Digital #Q11491. Published by Schott Music - Digital (S9.Q11491). Silvius Leopold Weiss (1686–1750) is considered to be the most important lutenist of the Baroque era. His works fascinate with elegance and grandeur on the lute. This effect is achieved by making the best possible use of the temperament of the Baroque lute with which third intervals – in contrast to fourths on the guitar – are predominant. The pieces are composed in such a way that the lutenist can often strike open strings and seldom has to manage difficult fingerings or stretch the left hand. When arranging these works for the guitar, the composer's main aim was to maintain the resulting ease of playing on the guitar and the ornaments typical of Weiss (especially the acciaccaturas) as best as possible. The approach to the lute's temperament therefore is cautious, without the player having to adjust significantly.

It consists of five movements in which the former has a simple, school sonata shape, with two well-identifiable themes, one ethereal based on sets of bells and harmonics and another choppy, contrasting, in parallel ninth intervals, which are developed and subsequently reexposed at the end of the movement.The second movement is a slow time when the resonance of arpeggiated sounds is important. As will happen in the fourth half, the music conveys a sense of freedom, almost improvisation resulting from its unsympted writing and the irregularity of the measure. The third is a Scherzo in which humorous character is accentuated by the rapid descending and ascending glissandi. No less grotesque is the contrasting quote of Gaspar Sanz's Spaniard played in a singular way as will be seen in the interpretation, suddenly interrupted by the glissandi. The fourth is another slow movement in which resonances are also the center. Here you resort to obtaining a particular, harmonic sound similar to the sound of a gong, by placing paper clip on the three boards of the guitar. The fifth and final time is live movement in the form of a purr in which the different episodes are quotes from the themes appeared in the previous movements. The player says about this work: Work dated in 1994, virtuoso and contrasting, of resounding accessibility, not intending to reach the audience using easy resources but an admirable capacity for communication, Gioco is divided into five movements in which varied colours and textures occur and almost all the abundant classical and contemporary timbric resources of the guitar are exploited with intelligence, (controlled challenges, blows on the board, metallic vibration of a clip...), In this work one of the outstanding findings of its author is the alternative use in the Scherzando of his contemporary language and two recognizable literal quotations of the Aragonese Baroque guitarist Gaspar Sanz, which appear softly in an ironic and evocative loudness. Justino Losada wrote this review:Gioco, represents a continuous game of sonorities of very rich timbric nuances as well as an exacerbated game of frets (such as in its 3rd movement Scherzando), and abundant contemporary resources such as the microtonal vicinity of the detuned passages or the blows on the box for our interpreter to show of his skills, a task that although complicated he knows how to perform perfectly coming out of all difficulties. Rebullida's language is not simple, but the composer is clearly aware of the difficulties to reach a large audience, and to do so he polishes his language by seeking an exchange between modern and ancient sonorities in a continuous game creating a climate of warm and direct communication. This is a solo guitar arrangement of the Bach Chaconne, originally written for Solo Violin, and is the final movement of Violin Parita No. 2 in D minor BWV 1004. This arrangement was created after Brad Rau memorized the Andres Segovia and Manuel Barrueco arrangement and fingering of this piece. This arrangement has some of the best elements of each arrangement. It also includes ideas from studying with Eliot Fisk and Jason Vieaux and things he heard on John Williams recorded. Rau also came up with some of his own ideas and unique solutions. Each measure is carefully and thoughtfully fingered after comparing multiple sources for maximum musicality while still having a level of playability. This was performed on Brad Rau's third album 'In a Very Unusual Manner.'.

This is a transcription of the prelude from Bach's third solo violin partita. The transcription has been made to be as close to the original violin partita as possible while still being playable (taking into account the octave difference between the instruments). The key changes made are transposition by an octave of pedal notes, similar to lute versions.The main difference between this violin transcription version and the arrangements from lute is that the bass notes are not present. However, there are also some minor differences in melody which may be unfamiliar to guitarists familiar with the lute arrangements.

Air On A G string is August Wilhelmj’s 1871 arrangement of the second movement of J. S. Bach’s Orchestral Suite No 3 in D major BWV 1068. The arrangement differs from the original in that the part of the first violins is transposed down so that the entire piece can be played on just the violin's lowest string (the G string, hence the name). In performance, that part is generally played by a single violin (instead of by the first violins as a group). This is however an arrangement of the original “Air†from the Orchestral Suite. Bach's third Orchestral Suite in D major, composed in the first half of the 18th century, has an Air as second movement. The music of the Air is written on four staves, for first and second violins, viola, and continuo. The interweaving melody lines of the high strings contrast with the pronounced rhythmic drive in the bass. I have followed this quite closely in the arrangement for guitar quartet in F major.

Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914747). Benjamin Godard (1849-1895) was a French violinist and composer of Jewish heritage. He wrote hundreds of works, including symphonies, operas, concertos, chamber and solo pieces, and songs. Today he is most remembered for his five symphonies and the Berceuse from his opera, Jocelyn. In style, Godard's music is reminiscent of the early Romantic period rather than the more grandiose style of Wagner. Godard wrote two sonatas for solo violin. The first dates from the 1870s. The second was composed in the 1890s and published after his death. Both sonatas contain four movements and employ baroque dance forms. The Deuxiéme (second) Sonata, arranged here for guitar solo, opens with a Sarabande in A minor, marked molto moderato e pompasamente (very moderately and pompously). The following Rigodon in C major is quick and convivial, although a contrasting section in C minor tempers the mood. The third movement, Adagio non ma troppo, begins in a tranquil F major. The texture soon thickens and makes striking use of the instrument’s lower register. A sudden modulation to F minor provides the sonata's most introspective moment. The piece returns to A minor and ends in a dramatic cliffhanger on the dominant. The rhythmic Bourrée serves as a true finale and includes a frenetic contrapuntal section recalling the violin sonatas of J. S. Bach.
