This is a piece composed that was later named by a family neighbor, after his initial hearing of the work performed in front of him. He entitled my composition, The Runaway. This composition may sound like a depiction of a young teen who runs away from their home in melancholy. As the character of the runaway seems to go further away, moments of happiness are found as well as tension from harsh experiences the runaway may have encountered. The tremolos illustrate constant motion of running which finally ends in a final calmed bliss when the running comes to an end.

This work was originally written for solo guitar. The composer and performers have found that this arrangement for two guitars is more practical and therefore more effective.The ideas in the work sprang from my desire to exploit the 'natural' attributes of the guitar. The initial idea of calmly ascending and descending thirds and sixths is fairly soon consigned to accompanying a second idea which is a full-throated melody.From about a third of the way into the piece, both of these ideas are intermittently interrupted by what sound like explosions. In reality they are implosions as they often return the music to the calm initial idea. However, these implosions affect the other ideas. For instance, the impassioned low-pitched melody (second idea) is now animated by tremoli and ornamented. As for the initial idea, by the end of the piece its identity has changed significantly.

The Color of Fire is, for guitar and piano, paints a picture of a fire in various scenes. This piece was written for Jacob Cypranowski. It's three movements, I. Brilliant, II. Changing, and III. Renewed are all inspired by fire. The first movement is all about the brilliance of color in a flame, and how calming it can be to just watch a fire. The second movement is about how quickly a fire can change, and how dangerous it can become. The final movement is about how the color of a flame is constantly renewed and fresh, even as the flame dies.

ABOUT: Brad Powell (aka The Candlelight Guitarist) began guitar at age ten, inspired by The Beatles. At 15, he became a protégé of jazz guitarist Joe Pass, and later studied classical guitar under Vincent Macaluso and at California State University, Northridge under Ronald Purcell, with a master class under Andrés Segovia. Brad was featured performing Gerald Wilson's Sonata for Guitar and Orchestra at the Hollywood Bowl, with the composer conducting. Brad was mentored in composition by David Rose (composer for Little House on the Prairie). Brad has composed music for TV, including Hill Street Blues and The 'A' Team, working with Mike Post. Brad has ten albums as The Candlelight Guitarist. When not making music, Brad is often out hiking with his four dogs. Musicians spend years preparing concert pieces to amaze and move audiences, but are they always appropriate in the relaxed setting of a café?These ten pieces aim to give the performer repertoire which they can use in these situations. Each piece is written to convey emotion, but not disturb the diner. Structurally, they consist of one or two sections with long harmonic progressions. This should allow the player to repeat each section as many times as they likewithout the audience noticing or becoming bored. I have included suggested structures in the scores, but these are suggestions only. This is true of the tempo markings as well. Feel free to slow the pieces down when a calmer atmosphere is required and the opposite when customers are a little livlier.

Lines 4 and 5 have a 12th fret harmonic which contains the melody and quickly returns to fretted strings as the melody proceeds. Hearing the melody note on the downbeat of the harmonic is the goal. I missed the mis-alignment of the last three beats of the 1st measure on page 2. Those are three homophonic chords played on the beats. The last 2 measures of the coda (and the song) require a few position jumps. Legato is the goal here.

The music was inspired by a line in a story written by my granddaughter Eillonwy (then 8 years old): Sitting in a dark room, eating a chocolate donut. The music represents a stream of memories, images, and thoughts as one’s life is contemplated over a donut. The composition is in 9 movements...or bites. The movements have varied lengths, from miniatures to developed pieces, and draw upon various roots-based musical styles including blues, Appalachian, tango, jazz, and samba. Miniature compositions have been an interest to me for many years. Donut Music's imagery gave me an opportunity to have several miniature compositions along with the longer movements.
