Solo Guitar - Level 3 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899127 Composed by Richard Strauss. Arranged by Rod Whittle. 20th Century. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #3037161. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899127). Transcription for solo classical guitar. 4 pages. Richard Strauss (1864 -1949) Strauss's music amounts to a huge body of symphonic and operatic work written over 60 years. Full of vitality, endlessly melodic, brilliantly orchestrated, it begins and ends in the romantic tradition, but for the most part expresses something more modern and individualistic, not without controversy in its time. Variation of style and structure is drawn from the descriptive (literary) nature of compositions, and an extraordinary inventiveness enlivens the scenes, moods and situations. Strauss said once that he produced music the way cows give milk, and indeed his music rarely seems contrived. The opera Strauss wrote 15 operas on a variety of subjects and across the whole spectrum of drama. He acknowledged being enchanted by the soprano voice, and his writing for it highlights many of the works, including Adriane auf Naxos (composed in 1912). The opera has been described as 'sparkling', which sums it up well, and passages influenced by Bach, Mozart, Puccini, and Wagner add to the interest. The storyline is a play within a play, the second part being the mythological 'Opera' staged in the story. The three pieces transcribed* are from this Opera. The guitar arrangements All classical guitar pieces are compromises. The instrument has only six strings, the left hand four fingers able to be used, and with the right hand its rare to use more than three fingers and the thumb. So, despite the amount of noise possible, it's inevitable that passages occur where either harmony, bass or fragments of counterpoint that would be beneficial are left out. In particular, the higher up the neck music is played the simpler it tends to be, if harder to play, and unless the low bass is an open string there wont be any. So I think the main part of attaining a fair transcription (better to be called an arrangement if the original musical structure is not strictly followed, as in this case) is determining how a good compromise can be reached. Melody, counterpoint, bass and main harmonies demand inclusion, and register is important. One may generally assume the original score can't be improved on. However, if the music may sound well on guitar, and the above elements can be incorporated without the playing becoming very difficult, something enjoyable to play and worthwhile listening to should be able to be achieved. Overture; 'A golden time …' Here the Mozart influence, better, inspiration, is wonderfully evident. A gentle waltz time (only the first section of the overture is transcribed) carries the colourful harmonies, strong melodic threads and connecting flourishes that stamp both pieces. The aria is alluded to in the Overture several times, which as you would expect, is intricately woven with the hints themes later to be established in the Opera. It has a kind of 'jazzy' freedom, and it's always miraculous to me that composition so involved can retain its musical line, here done in Strauss's inimitable way. The aria, sung not far into the Opera, has the perfect inevitability of Mozart, but again it is Strauss. As explained, keys have been changed to suit the guitar. Chorus and Aria This selection from the finale has features well worth trying to translate. The device of having a strong chorus, in the style of a Bach chorale, stated and then counterpointed by a solo voice in a restatement, is potent, and that in the opera the chorus (of the three nymphs) isn't immediately followed by the accompanying aria (of Ariadne) means the latter comes as a moment of surprising beauty. Neither parts are complicated, and lovely arpeggios, a feature Strauss's music, often impart the assured progressions. A problem was to capture the distinct register of the soprano voices, som.

Solo Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.483404 Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by Robert McCormack. Christmas,Classical,Holiday,Sacred,Traditional. Individual part. 1 pages. Published by Robert McCormak (A0.483404). The hymn that is this Christmas carol has gone through many iterations before popularly settling on this most commonly sung Mendelssohn melody. The arrangement is well within the intermediate level with the possible exception of the first two measures of the last two lines. There is a stretch here between fingers one and four, frets one and five with the additional challenge of a middle voice. Another carol offered by this arranger is, Once In Royal David's City, which has the same stretch but without the inner voice with which to contend. These two pieces are frequently performed together due to other similarities between them.

Guitar - Digital Download SKU: ZZ.DZ-4280 Composed by Francis Kleynjans. Score. 12 pages. Les Productions d'OZ - Digital #DZ 4280. Published by Les Productions d'OZ - Digital (ZZ.DZ-4280). Francis KleynjansIt’s a beautiful journey through the tones that I offer you with these two pieces. The first The Stations of the Cross express the 14 scenes of the Passion of Christ through a simple arpeggio and 14 different tones. The 12 minor keys which begin the work in a perfectly natural way (D, A, E, B, F#, C#, G#, D#, Bb, F, C, G) are followed by two major keys (D and the) who come conclude the work as a triumphant deliverance. The second piece Labyrinthe uses the same principle, but in a different way. With another arpeggio and major and minor tones which follow one another alternating in a natural way through a slight mutation, leading us astray in the meanders of the tones, to finally find ourselves in the original tone, we thus delivering from this great labyrinth (do, lam, re, sim, mi, do#m, fa#, re#m, ab, fam and do).I hope that the discoverers of these pieces will have the same pleasure that I had in composing them for them.Francis Kleynjans.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1165227 By Judy Garland. By E.Y. Yip Harburg and Harold Arlen. Arranged by Richard Hirsch. 20th Century,Broadway,Multicultural,Musical/Show,Standards,World. Individual part. 7 pages. Richard Hirsch #765578. Published by Richard Hirsch (A0.1165227). With inspiration in Isreal Kamakawiwo’ole’s Somewhere Over the Rainbow and What a Wonderful World mashup, I offer an arrangement of the song Over the Rainbow for solo acoustic guitar. In my childhood The Wizard of Oz was one of my favourite fairy tales, especially as I spent a few of my early years in the little town of Winfield Kansas where tornadoes were a constant threat. I still remember huddling in the cellar with my mother and little brother when a tornado warning had been broadcast. With this in mind, the first part of the arrangement is meant to resemble a whirlwind that takes us up to the dreamland of Oz portrayed in the slower second part. In the third part, we come back down to waking reality in another mirror image whirlwind. The arrangement has an afro-flamenco character with two tiers of rhythm. Tier one is the normal 4/4 rhythm with accents at 1 and 3. Tier two consists of accents falling on beats 2 and 2& and 3& of the 4 beat measures. Tier two can be highlighted by clapping or tapping with a table knife on a bottle at beats 2 and 2& and 3&, with the strongest accent on 3& (an upbeat). The piece ends with a chord of natural harmonics on the 3& upbeat. The natural harmonics in the rhythmic fingerpicking resembling a kalimba (thumb harp) add an African touch to the piece. The piece is within reach of advanced intermediate students of fingerstyle or classical acoustic guitar. Besides the polyrhythmic fingerpicking, in the second dreamland part the piece offers the opportunity to play a broken chord of right hand harmonics, usually a real hit with listening audiences. I give suggestions for left and right hand fingering where I think necessary. The suggested tempo is presto for the fast first and third parts, but they could be played even faster for dramatic effect. The slow dreamland second part should be played with the melody floating lazily over the beat. The piece is a good follow up to my arrangements, also available at SheetMusicDirect and SheetMusicPlus of Freight Train and What a Wonderful World that use the same fingerpicking techniques.

Solo Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.899137 Composed by Giulio Regondi. Arranged by Rod Whittle. Romantic Period. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #4349081. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899137). for solo classical guitar (tremolo) 4 pp (7 min.)GIULIO REGONDI (1823 - 72) Regondi was born in Switzerland, but lived in France and, mostly, the United Kingdom. He was a child prodigy of the guitar, with Fenando Sor dedicating a piece to him when he was just nine. He composed for the guitar and also the concertina. His works for solo guitar comprise etudes, a set of variations and some larger compositions. The tremolo section of the Nocturne (op.19) - subtitled 'Reverie' – must be some of the most wonderful music written for tremolo guitar. In the Nocturne it is split between sections of different style and content, but its effectiveness as a piece is fully satisfied without these interspersed parts, nice as they are, and its persuasive theme quite naturally repeats to end with a superb coda (which also finishes the actual Nocturne). The original score has no dynamics except for the end, and I have not added any. However, the piece is impossible to play without inferring some loudness, tempo and accentuation changes. There is that Romantic period element to it. I have added fingering. I like to settle into a barre position where possible – it often lets the bass accompaniment ring through (e.g. the D in the first few bars) and simplifies the playing. But it hardly needs saying that fingering, helpful if it is good, is a kind of curse if it is bad or just wrong, and it is never mandatory. It is always instructive with tremolo pieces to first play some of the top line (e.g. of the first few bars) without tremolo to properly reveal its melody. The style needs plenty of practice to achieve fidelity to this musical meaning; that is always the aim. Then listen carefully as the lower part is added. The bass is very important, as mentioned, but the harmonies of the broken chords are vital too. The Nocturne is brilliant counterpoint.

Thomas Commuck (1804 to 1855) was a member of the Narragansett tribe and is considered the first NativeAmerican to publish a musical work using Western European notation. The work, Indian Melodies, is a shape‐notehymnal published as a contribution to the hymnody of the Methodist Episcopal Church and was published in 1845.Guitar Sonata on themes by Thomas Commuck is a traditional four‐movement work with an opening sonatamovement (Mooanam); a double variation form (Menominie and Susquehannah); a canonic minuet with trio (Pequot and Missouri; and a closing prelude with fugue (Flathead). The melodies are labeled as they appear throughout the score, though not always with reference to their original forms. Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.914739 Composed by Sol Paul Levy (1881-1920). Arranged by Eric J Roth. 20th Century,Romantic Period. Individual part. 6 pages. Eric J Roth #4593125. Published by Eric J Roth (A0.914739). 6 pages (2 pages of music) formatted for 8.5x11 printing.Sol Paul Levy, born in Chicago, Illinois in 1881, was a composer, arranger and performer of silent film music. He attended All Hallows College in Dublin, Ireland and served as first clarinetist in bands led by John Philip Sousa and Arthur Pryor. Levy led the foreign orchestrating department for Victor Records – which was the first music company to produce the disc record – and was a founder of Belwin Music. Levy compiled a series of photoplay cues for piano that was published in H.S. Gordon’s 1914 Motion Picture Collection. He also wrote songs, the most famous of which was That Naughty Waltz. Sol Paul Levy died in New York in 1920. During the Silent Film Era (1896-1936), showings usually featured live music, which helped to provide dramatic and emotional cues for the audience. The first public silent film shown in 1895 was accompanied by a guitarist. Soon after, films were commonly accompanied by either a pianist, organist, or chamber orchestra. Accompanists often improvised or compiled music from the classical, theatrical or popular repertories using a cue sheet identifying the effects or moods to be conveyed. While some films produced full scores or detailed cue sheets containing excerpts of music unique to that film, a repertoire of generic music soon developed to provide accompanists with music that they could adapt as needed. With titles such as Dramatic Conflict, Dramatic Tension, Heavy Mysterioso, and Weird Oriental Theme, Sol Paul Levy’s scores clearly served this purpose. The Vampire: A Dramatic Theme, composed in 1917, could have been easily adapted to any of the more than twenty films about vampires that appeared between 1909 and 1930. The score exists in three versions: one for small orchestra with piano conductor, one for chamber orchestra without piano, and one for chamber orchestra without timpani. Instruments included piano, flute, clarinet, two cornets, trombone, two timpani, two violins, viola, cello, and bass. Despite being composed for small orchestra, the piece, composed in A minor, is well suited to the guitar once instrumental and octave doublings are removed. While a solo guitar cannot produce the power and volume of a chamber orchestra, it certainly can evoke the intended mood. Except in a few instances owing to the limitations of the guitar, all original dynamic markings have been retained. All fingerings, of course, are editorial. Please note that some of the fingerings in the score may differ than those used in the linked YouTube Video.

Solo Guitar - Level 4 - Digital Download SKU: A0.899136 Composed by Alban Berg. Arranged by Rod Whittle. Contemporary. Individual part. 4 pages. Maggie Creek Music #3874083. Published by Maggie Creek Music (A0.899136). For solo classical guitar; 4 pp; first part of 2nd movement of the Lyric SuiteAlban Berg 1885 -1935Berg was a student of Arnold Schoenberg, and came to prominence with compositions using the atonalism of that school. He incorporated chromaticism and an absence of tonality into his compositions with complete facility, if not to public acclaim. His creativity was interrupted by World War 1, during which he served in the Austrian Army. He returned to composition as a champion of modern music, with his opera Wozzeck (1923) bringing both fame and notoriety. He died of blood poisoning in 1935. Over the past century dissonance increased in the compositions of serious music to a point where the semitones had equal value, which is harmonically a kind of wall. Berg was an early innovator. However, if when strictly followed such serialism reaches an ultimate dissonance that effectively sees off melody and harmony as emotional and structural entities, that still leaves elements around form, dynamics and rhythm for the purposes of expression, and these together with adroit note selection prove to be surprisingly potent for articulation and cohesion. The Lyric Suite (1927), which uses Schoenberg's twelve-tone technique, is a case in point. The very name seems incongruous for an atonal work, yet lyric it is, and if the forms used are necessarily masked by the characteristics of serial writing they are not eliminated by them. In this excerpt a rondo form is used with the principle subject repeated on the third page (noted in the score) after a digression to more remote regions than this form usually adopts, due to the atonality. As well, Berg's writing is rarely purely atonal. In fact the integration of consonant elements are one of the music's most alluring features. It would be so easy, one feels, for melodic material to coagulate the mix, but in his hands the very opposite is generated, an increased clarity of mood. The music remains consistent, as it should, and the incorporation of (often only relatively) thematic material, if often arresting after so much dissonance, doesn't always always mean less intensity or gloom. It is simply effective, either way. Having said all that, it can hardly be denied that the substance of atonality (dissonance, clashing semitones, unharmonic bass) gives it a special suitability to express dark outlooks, and Berg is the author of Wozzeck and Lulu, no downtown musicals. It is hard to determine if Berg chose atonality because it could deliver the angst or because he was bored with obvious forms and romanticism. Probably both.

I've based this arrangement closely on the acoustic guitar accompaniment played on the original song by George Harrison but have made changes in a few places in order to play the vocal melody.I've decided to start the piece slowly and sparsely for the introdution and first chorus and to then build during the first verse and second chorus. I recommend playing the piece with either no capo or a capo on the second fret. This is a standard notation version - there is also a tab version available.

Derek Hasted writes This charming little piece makes a great concert item for a quartet or large ensemble with modest experience - it’s perfect for a school ensemble’s first concert! It’s playable entirely in the first position, and with the exception of an occasional 3rd string G#, works well in the second position. A more experienced quartet might like to take the higher notes further up the neck for a more rounded sound. There are two arrangements here...One is in traditional SATB style - the four lines playing at four different pitches. The second rotates the parts at every phrase boundary so that everyone plays the tune at some point - the line currently holding the tune has a slightly louder dynamic marking. I hope you enjoy these arrangements!

Guitar - Digital Download SKU: A0.1070388 Composed by Apostolos Paraskevas. 20th Century,Romantic Period,World. Full Performance. Duration 260. Silver Sickle Publications #6103003. Published by Silver Sickle Publications (A0.1070388). Mountains of Stowe, 2015 is a two-movement piece commissioned by and dedicated to guitarist Adam Holzman. The first movement I Stand Strong reflects the serenity and isolation someone might feel when surrounded by the mountains of Stowe, Vermont in the U.S.A. The second movement …and the Sky is the Limit written in an ABA cyclic form is full of rhythmic gestures starting with the combination of 7/8, 2/4, 5/8 and 3/4 in the first four measures that leads to a slow movement as an attempt to sing a Greek song in those vast territories and to portray the thankfulness of being there and experience the presence of the amazing beauty of it. When asked why he commissioned this piece, Holzman replied, My wife and I spend our summers in Stowe. We love being there, celebrate the summer and spend time outside. We have family and friends who come and share a few days with us and Apostolos is a dear friend who has been coming for several years. We talked about the possibility of him writing a piece that reflected Stowe and the mountains. When asked about the piece, Paraskevas responded, I always write music for the person behind the instrument, so while composing every note of this piece I had Adam in my mind; the way he plays, the way he breathes the way he lives his life. The work is written for the mountains of Stowe through Adam’s eyes and heart and I am the vehicle who translates it.

Fernando Neves #895115. Published by Fernando Neves (A0.1305660). “Fly Me to the Moonâ€, originally titled “In Other Wordsâ€, is a timeless classic that has captured the hearts of many music lovers. The song was written in 1954 by the talented American composer Bart Howard. The first recording of the song was made in the same year by Kaye Ballard. However, it was Frank Sinatra’s 1964 version that became closely associated with the Apollo missions to the Moon. Sinatra’s rendition elevated the song to new heights and it has since been covered by numerous artists including Tony Bennett, Ella Fitzgerald, Diana Krall, and Astrud Gilberto. Now, imagine this enchanting melody being interpreted through fingerstyle guitar. The intricate fingerpicking technique could beautifully express the nuances of this timeless tune.Whether you’re a seasoned musician or a beginner, playing “Fly Me to the Moon†on these instruments would be a delightful experience. Enjoy your musical journey! PDF file contains score with and without tablature and also includes chords and fingering. 3 pages.

If you said yes to any of these, then I would recommend the First Place For Jazz book by Dean Sorenson. But I have seen one problem. They do not dicuss A flat! A flat is a crucial key in jazz. So I have extended his book with 4 new orginal pieces in A flat. 1. (major)2. (mixolydian)3. (dorian)4. (blues).

Luiz José Maria de Oliveira, a man of many trades, was born in Portugal in 1821.He lived until 1883 in Coimbra, where he was a musician and composer, lithographer, merchant and hairdresser. These Variations on a Sentimental Theme, from his guitar magazine O Conimbricense Armónico published between 1848-49 are one of the rare examples of composition for the 6 string guitar in Portugal during the first half of the 19th century. This fingered and revised edition corrects some minor mistakes in the original. It contains all my research and newly discovered informations about this previously unknown composer.Full bio here

English.<br> <br> Style &. Craft - Troubleshooting 1 - The Fingerboard Map: Chords. The Guide To Twentieth-Century Guitar: Praxis is the first instructional book of its kind. It takes a strikingly new and refreshing approach to learning guitar, and it is carefully designed to guarantee efficient practice with rewarding results. Establish Your Own Musical Direction: Whether your playing falls under one of the more traditional conventional styles, or whether you're a composer and arranger or exploring new musical regions and establishing your own musical direction or personal fusion of musical ideas and influences, Praxis has what you need. Unlock The Musician Within: The name of the system (Praxis comes from the Greek word meaning practice and to do) accurately reflects its general orientation. Play it first, getting sound and satisfaction out of the guitar immediately, and musical understanding will naturally follow. Praxis lets you choose the precise subject you want and immediately provides relevant musical examples. And these examples are presented in such a way that the principle behind the example is always clear, thus allowing you to apply it directly to your music. One Step Beyond - Originators Vs. Imitators: Traditional guitar books try to teach you to play someone else's music. That approach tends to produce imitators rather than originators and real musicianship skills are picked up slowly and almost by accident. Praxis takes you directly to being able to play anything that you want ... someone else's music, your own music, and everything in between. Praxis takes you one step beyond. Efficient Learning: Guitar instruction books are traditionally written in a progressive fashion. Book 1 first, then Book 2, etc. However, the selection and sequencing of material is usually determined by the book rather than the reader, and the familiar result is that, while the book progresses, the student doesn't. Again, Praxis reverses this. You don't have to start with Book 1, there is no Book 1! You go where your interests lie. Just begin work on any one subject in any volume that attracts you. Solo Guitar - Level 2 - Digital Download SKU: A0.1139670 Composed by Brian Streckfus. Instructional,Jazz,Singer/Songwriter. Individual part. 12 pages. Brian Streckfus #739941. Published by Brian Streckfus (A0.1139670). This is a 12-page PDF showing 7 guitar chords on each page. Rather than selling each PDF seperately (which is a bit overpriced and too much of a hassle), I decided to combine them and offer a great deal! Learn how to compose chord progressions like a pro while having fun and playing! Objective:Teach yourself the seven chords that belong to each type of scale. Rather than bombard you with a thousand guitar chords (which is easy to happen when browsing the internet or playing random songs), I'd rather show how a select few chords are working well together in common contexts. The hope is that you would then be able to see this happening in all 12 keys. What Scales/Modes are being harmonized? C Major (+jazz version) A (natural) minor (+jazz version) A harmonic minor (+jazz version) B Locrian D Dorian E Phyrigian F Lydian G Mixolydian Features: Slowly increases in physical and theoritcal difficulty at the same time. Many music theory books seem abstract and impractical whereas these chord charts show music theory applied to guitar. These chord progressions are a great composition aid. Guitar chord diagrams Traditional notation with letter names on the note heads Roman numerals color coded Modes included. The Beatles and jazz musicians use modal chord progressions to give their music uniqueness. It's almost as if one note is wrong intentionally. Practicality and flow on guitar is emphasized more then music theory conciseness. Letter names are not in a perfect order (as that is sometimes impossible for the guitar to do). Sometimes a more complex chord is opted for because it's actually easier to play physically. Tips: Order = Blue, Yellow, Red, Blue for stereotypical classical style chord progressions. Rock and blues often do more of a chord succession; red going to yellow happens often, even though it is breaking a rule. The professional names for blue, yellow, red: tonic, predominant, dominant respectively. I did not invent this theoretical concept, but I am probably one of the few musician's to color code the categories regularly. The colors explain the situation elegantly; the professional words seem like abstract PhD education, whereas saying blue is relaxing and red is uncomfortable is something a child can understand quickly. One fantastic tip I hardly hear anyone say: it doesn't so much matter that you play the same chord as the other musician in your ensemble (unless you are getting paid to do exactly that). It matters more that you simply play the same color as them. You will have a deeper understanding of how music works if you think like this, and mistakes will no longer be seen as mistakes. What happens when a C Major and A minor chord are played at the same time? Hardly anything! It's just a Am7! Big whoop! It isn't a horrendous sounding mistake. Circle a key on the circle of fifths. Now circle the two keys next to it (-1b, +1#). This leads to six chords that belong diatonically to the first key you circled! Memorizing these will allow you to better predict what composers are about to do, especially if you know ahead of time that the song does not change key. Get away from the echo chamber of common are arugably bad cowboy chords and be able to build your own.

Published by Tim Rushworth (A0.943126). This is an arrangement of Scott Joplin's famous rag; The Entertainer for two guitars. the first part is slightly easier than the second, but both players have lots of fun as the melody is swapped between them at every repeat of all sections. I have included all four sections, so this is a full version.I've been playing this with friends and also made a video recording of both parts which will shortly be uploaded to YouTube.
