Size A4.Kyrgyz Rhythms is a folk song that uses a variety of rhythms and pitches, and can provide a challenge for nearly every instrument. This part is for the B flat clarinet, preferably in a concert band setting. In this piece, the clarinet takes a leading role for most of the piece along with the flute and alto saxophone. The clarinetist must be able to play up to an altissimo A before playing.The part contains a wide variety of musical elements, pitch, rhythm, tempo, key etc. The piece is divided into different sections by two or three bar rests, that can prepare the performer for the next section. A clarinetist playing the piece must be wary of the key signature, as for some parts of the song, the key signature can catch out beginning clarinetists.In a non-concert band setting, the large rests of three bars should be ignored. They contain solos from other instruments that should only be recognised in a concert band.

JB Linear #3885595. Published by JB Linear (A0.581993). Sigfrid Karg-Elert (1877 – 1933) was an instructor of music theory and composition at the Leipzig Conservatory. He wrote his 30 Caprices for a flautist friend in 1918 and they have since become standard etudes for flute students. With some editing as to range and technical issues arising between the flute and the clarinet, they also work well for clarinet. There were three caprices omitted in this edition since they were unsuitable for clarinet (#18, 23, 28). The clarinetist will find these caprices challenging and instructive. One should note that the convention of accidentals only effecting the note in the octave in which it is first played is usually marked in this edition, and the player should be aware that this is the case throughout. - John Gibson, editor

The first theme (mm 5–20) should have a very ethereal, mysterious character, which is characterized by its key of g minor. The second theme (mm 21–28) is somewhat brighter, with the sun trying to work its way through the mists. The mists conquer the sun as the first theme returns (mm 33–40). Finally, the sun is victorious and shines brightly through the mists (mm 41–54). Notice how the music moves to a major key and the piano accompaniment is much more energetic and joyful. Your playing should convey those feelings. As night falls, though, the mists move back in as the first theme returns once again, and the whole piece fades into calm, mist-covered darkness.

Atrahente (or “Attractive” in English) exemplifies the interwoven polka and choro rhythms often found in the music of Francisca Chiquinha Gonzaga, one of Brazil's most prolific composers. This melody of hers, with expressive melodies and technical runs, is a great fit for a soloist looking to be challenged.The solo clarinet is accompanied and supported by 4-mallet marimba. I chose marimba over piano for this arrangement as the marimba's warmth and percussiveness greatly contribute to the feel of the piece.The soloist is encouraged to take liberties at each of the fermatas, and should treat the Andante section as a quazi-cadenza. This is certainly not a rigid piece of repertoire with only one way it can be played.

This edition of the solo clarinet part of the Artie Shaw Concerto for Clarinet is a note for note transcription of what Shaw recorded on the record version and in the motion picture.Shaw’s solos as played in both the motion picture and record version are represented in great detail with the film solo shown as ossia so the player can view and choose which they might prefer to play. As many techniques as possible are carefully detailed to show ornaments, slurs, accents etc.The companion parts available here for big band and strings restores many elements missing in other versions available.  The strings here are restored to the original voicings so  important to the style of the classic sound of the period. The solos are transcribed note for note as played by greats such as Billy Butterfield on Trumpet, Johnny Guarnieri on Piano, Les Robinson on Alto Sax, Jerry Jerome on Tenor Sax, Vernon “Brownie†Brown on Trombone. There is an entire sax riff that was extemporaneously improvised during the session that is missing entirely in other published versions. The instrumentation is also restored to only the instruments that were used in Shaw’s recordings. There are many details that help the ease of performability of the genre and gesture of jazz idiom. Lastly, the intention is that this should be performed with saxophones. However, there are optional parts for clarinets and bassoons that can be used only if saxes are not available. I have performed from this solo part many times and I hope others will do so as well. I give great thanks to several people, who over the course of my career, taught me many skills that resulted in this. This solo is based on the octatonic scale, alternating between half steps and whole steps. The use of octave jumps is used to somewhat ground the piece in a tonality of B-flat in contrast to the more chromatic sounds of the octatonic scale. The title, Just In Time, refers to a couple aspects of the piece. Firstly, this was an assignment during my Graduate work in Composition and was finished just in time, only minutes before the deadline. Secondly, being a rhythmically complex piece, careful attention should be paid to playing the piece accurately and in time.
