Published by HMS Music (A0.1435814). ___________________________With a nice minor mode sound and a propelling timpani line, TIDINGS OF JOY opens with God Rest Ye, Merry, harmonized in drone fashion, then features a soli middle section of Pat-a-Pan for which you audition the players who get to play this more difficult middle section (keeps your best players challenged!) while the rest of the band vocalize a single pitch on ahh. The piece then recaps with God Rest You Merry with a slightly fuller instrumentation and a simple flute obligato line.FEATURES: Melody opportunities for all wind parts; Multiple percussion parts give colorful sound; timpani provide bass ostinato; Students sing ahh on a single note - great for improving intonation!; Soli section in middle will motivate players to learn the part so they get to play the melody (keeps your better players challenged); Low brass parts are very simple.RANGES: C minor (3 flats). But I also had a number of players who could move faster and play more challenging rhythms and notes than others. What to do? How about a simple arrangement with flexible part assignments?JINGLE THOSE BELLS! is a super-easy setting of Jingle Bells. The work opens with the traditional unison rendition of the melody, as found in almost every beginner band method book ever written. But then, after a brief pause, the melody is repeated, but now faster and with the addition of a bass line and rhythmic accompaniment. The rhythmic accompaniment is provided by several of your best clarinet, sax, and trumpet players who play the Advanced Part. And if you are short on bass voice instruments, you can utilize the optional bass parts for Alto Sax. Super flexible and a bit humorous, it takes a little score study to realize how adaptable this piece is. Guaranteed to work with your beginners! (PS: the printed music shows Callie May, our cat, as arranger. I gave her credit so my wife could play more than one piece by me at her holiday concerts without looking too biased! Well here it is and it's every young band's favorite. As I laid in bed recuperating from a triple bypass the theme for this tune came to mind. I concluded that ‘Stompin At The Bypass’ would be an appropriate title. That is exactly what your audience will be doing after your band performs this number… stomping their feet to the beat and humming the tune on the way out the door. A real crowd pleaser and guaranteed to get your band a standing ovation every time. It's amazing how good this easy, well written piece will make your beginning band sound. Perfect instrument ranges and lack of technical difficulties make it a winner. Complete with full score and parts for flute, oboe, clarinet, bass clarinet, alto and tenor sax, f horn, trumpet, trombone, tuba, bells and percussion. Give it a try and you will not be disappointed.
