It has been in use since the country's independence in 1993. This song formed the first part of the national anthem of the old Czechoslovakia, with the first stanza of the Slovak anthem forming the second. Its music was written by the composer František Škroup (1801-1862) and the playwright Josef Kajetán Tyl (1808-1856) as part of the operetta Fidlovačka aneb žádný hněv a žádná rvačka (No Anger and No Fight), more precisely it was an aria from the first act. Congratulations on completing the first few pages of your Method Book! I wrote this fanfare using only the typical concepts covered within these pages. The idea was that the music would be passed out after mastery of these concepts as a reward - we would end class with a little work each day on the “concert music†even if we weren’t preparing a concert. I have always found that it’s never too early to start working on the ensemble skills of balance, blend, intonation, and understanding one’s role within the ensemble. Plus, the act of making music together is why our kids joined band: playing pieces of music is fun!This fanfare should be played at Quarter Note = 116. It should be strong and notes should be played for their full value. There are only ever three lines (plus percussion) at any given time to help start the process of teaching Melody, Harmony, and Accompaniment.

Middle voices lead the 2nd theme and a back-and-forth leads the 3rd theme back to the main theme, this time passing through the various voices.

In the King’s Forest is broken into Three distinct settings, all using the same melody based on the introductory fanfare-like melody. The first setting is at the edge of the forest and is light and more thinly arranged, focusing on the upper voices. The second setting is further into the forest and uses the same melody in the mid voices, but harmonized more heavily. The third setting is deep in the forest and the melody shifts from Bb Major to C Minor and is the most densely arranged. We break through the forest to the other side with a return of the intro fanfare and ends with a triumphant sequence of main theme back in Bb Major. Using the first six notes of the Bb Scale and simple rhythmic figures, In the King’s Forest offers young band students a chance to perform and connect to mature musical content.
