This Dance uses the 1st 6 pitches of the Bb scale and basic rhythmic concepts to convey a peasant-style country dance in simple 8-bar phrases. Every instrument group enjoys the opportunity to perform the melody, harmony, or accompaniment. Opening with a brief intro based on the main theme, low voices lead the first section and pass to the high voices in the second. Middle voices lead the 2nd theme and a back-and-forth leads the 3rd theme back to the main theme, this time passing through the various voices.

In the King’s Forest is broken into Three distinct settings, all using the same melody based on the introductory fanfare-like melody. The first setting is at the edge of the forest and is light and more thinly arranged, focusing on the upper voices. The second setting is further into the forest and uses the same melody in the mid voices, but harmonized more heavily. The third setting is deep in the forest and the melody shifts from Bb Major to C Minor and is the most densely arranged. We break through the forest to the other side with a return of the intro fanfare and ends with a triumphant sequence of main theme back in Bb Major. Using the first six notes of the Bb Scale and simple rhythmic figures, In the King’s Forest offers young band students a chance to perform and connect to mature musical content.

The piece then recaps with God Rest You Merry with a slightly fuller instrumentation and a simple flute obligato line.FEATURES: Melody opportunities for all wind parts; Multiple percussion parts give colorful sound; timpani provide bass ostinato; Students sing ahh on a single note - great for improving intonation!; Soli section in middle will motivate players to learn the part so they get to play the melody (keeps your better players challenged); Low brass parts are very simple.RANGES: C minor (3 flats). While teaching music for SaydelCommunity School District in Des Moines, Iowa, I taught the round to elementary students and concluded that the folk tunewould lend itself well to young instrumentalists. Consequently, I set out to arrange the round for emerging band.After an introduction based on motives and rhythms of the round, the tune is initially played by an alto saxophone solo (oroboe). After a transition from the key of F Major to E-Flat Major, the band divides into three groups to play the three-voiceround. The entire round is repeated twice, exhibiting a lengthy crescendo and eventual diminuendo caused by the threeinstrument groupings ending their voices in the round.Having students perform a simple, yet lyrical round provides for a variety of educational opportunities. Similar to youngvocal ensembles, performing a round helps students to securely play with a group that is doing something different thanother sections of the ensemble, which ultimately assists in the transition to playing within a smaller, individual section orindependent part. Reflections on a German Folksong contains simplistic rhythms, which allows students to primarily focuson phrasing, articulation, tone quality and dynamics.
