In the King’s Forest is broken into Three distinct settings, all using the same melody based on the introductory fanfare-like melody. The first setting is at the edge of the forest and is light and more thinly arranged, focusing on the upper voices. The second setting is further into the forest and uses the same melody in the mid voices, but harmonized more heavily. The third setting is deep in the forest and the melody shifts from Bb Major to C Minor and is the most densely arranged. We break through the forest to the other side with a return of the intro fanfare and ends with a triumphant sequence of main theme back in Bb Major. Using the first six notes of the Bb Scale and simple rhythmic figures, In the King’s Forest offers young band students a chance to perform and connect to mature musical content.

Written specifically to be performed minutes before a concert, Waiting is a soundscape piece that searches interaction between musicians and the public, working musical sections of different textures through the use of groups of random notes. During the performance, all the musicians walk in different places around the public that arrives to watch the concert. The three signals usually used to signal the start of the concert are replaced by small fanfares played by the trumpets which also serve as reference for the beginning of each section of the piece. The conducting part is left to the musicians and the conductor also participates in performance through small interventions in some groups of performers. The piece can be performed by many groups based on wind instruments, it's a great opportunity for young students to have contact with aspects of contemporary music, including practice of improvisation and memorization. This beginner piece is an excellent choice for a final concert for your first year band. Each section has a soli and will give the listener the opportunity to hear each part of the band play individually. The march-like tempo and style incorporates the first 6 notes of the Bb major scale while keeping simple rhythmic patterns of quarter notes, half notes and whole notes for the wind instruments. The snare drum has sixteenth notes in combination with eighth notes while the bass drum and tambourine have mostly quarter notes and half notes. Two and four bar phrases are used to create a leisurely stroll while Walking to the Park.

Composed in an overture style, the piece begins with a powerful introductory statement pedaling on Bb major. After the introduction, the second theme is introduced by the clarinet section, accompanied by cabasa and triangle. The B section begins at Rehearsal C, featuring a light, legato approach. The piece picks back up at Rehearsal D with another rousing statement of the first theme, and propels itself to a thrilling close with a restatement of the introduction. Have fun! Noble and stately, Processional March is written for your second year beginning Band. The elements of this piece include dynamic contrasts, varying articulations, and a new time & key signature that is often not seen in first year literature, while maintaining an appropriate range for your students—for reference, the clarinets are under the break, with their highest note being the 3rd line Bb and the lowest being the B-natural below the staff. Processional March is written in 2/4, with the first half of the piece in Eb and the second in Bb. With a tempo marking of Moderato {quarter note = 108}, this march comes in under 3 minutes, making this piece an attainable piece to learn for any upcoming concert. The rhythmic structure of this piece is strict quarter and 8th note rhythms for all wind instruments. The snare drum part also has the same rhythmic structure, but also includes 9-stroke rolls, flams, flam-taps and paired 8th-two 16th rhythms. The percussion section has only four parts–Crash Cymbals, Snare/Bass Drum and Glockenspiel—making this ideal for any sized percussion section.Processional March follows an |:AA:|-B-C form. Throughout the piece, each instrument visits the harmonic structure beneath the melody, as well as playing the melodies featured in the different sections. Part-wise, all of the wind instruments are written in a comfortable range and have unison parts, with the flutes, clarinets and & trumpets having certain measures divided into two parts, still maintaining unison rhythms. The flutes are divided specifically into Flute 1 and Flute 2/Oboe, which is ideal if you do not have an oboe in your beginning band. Students will enjoy this straight forward march and directors will find rehearsing it to be enjoyable and allows for the teaching of newer techniques and skills to advance their band’s level of playing!
