Covering more than 70 percent of the surface of Earth, oceans are filled with wondrous life, a wide spectrum of colors, and great mystery. Dive deep into ocean life with this selection for beginner concert band (Grade 1). The piece is written in B-flat Mixolydian, with a contrasting softer section in C minor. There is also non-functional harmony throughout the work that differentiates this piece from other works of this difficulty, with few accidentals (concert B in saxes and horns, concert D-flat in low brass and reeds). This selection can be played with a minimal ensemble of flutes, clarinets, alto saxes, trumpets, trombones and percussion. Congratulations on completing the first few pages of your Method Book! I wrote this fanfare using only the typical concepts covered within these pages. The idea was that the music would be passed out after mastery of these concepts as a reward - we would end class with a little work each day on the “concert music†even if we weren’t preparing a concert. I have always found that it’s never too early to start working on the ensemble skills of balance, blend, intonation, and understanding one’s role within the ensemble. Plus, the act of making music together is why our kids joined band: playing pieces of music is fun!This fanfare should be played at Quarter Note = 116. It should be strong and notes should be played for their full value. There are only ever three lines (plus percussion) at any given time to help start the process of teaching Melody, Harmony, and Accompaniment.

The rondo is a musical form made up of a main melody (theme) which alternates with one or more contrasting melodies (episodes). The most common pattern is ABACA; this Little Rondo provides students a chance to experience this important musical form with the first five pitches of the Bb Scale and the basic concepts covered in the first few pages of most Beginning Band Method Books. High, Middle, and Low voices all get opportunities to experience the melody, episode melodies, and harmony parts.

Middle voices lead the 2nd theme and a back-and-forth leads the 3rd theme back to the main theme, this time passing through the various voices.

Marching In The Dark (Grade 1) is not your standard young band march. It has a modal melody and harmony but is easily playable and enjoyable melodies, where all sections get to shine. Wind parts are playable by 1st-year players. Ranges are generally within the first 6 notes. Upper WW is mostly in unison with an occasional 2nd Clarinet split. Lower WW/Brass is mostly in unison as well. Trombones occasionally separates for harmonic depth and easier positions. The Trumpet split is like the Clarinet in that it is rare and used for harmonic support and lower range for the youngest players. Percussion parts are more “advancedâ€, but still easily performed using fewer players and simplified parts provided. WOODWINDS - Fl, Ob, Bsn, Clar(2), BC, AS, TS, BS.
