The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. Strong, a reporter for the North American Newspaper Alliance, who visited Vanzetti in prison in May 1927, three months before his execution.  «If it had not been for these things, I might have lived out my life talking at street corners to scorning men. He recorded pithy and humorous songs that became popular in the 1950s and 60s, often parodying popular musical forms, though they usually had original melodies (an exception is The Elements, in which he set the names of the chemical elements to the tune of the Major-General's Song from Gilbert and Sullivan's 'The Pirates of Penzance'). Lehrer's early performances dealt with non-topical subjects and black humour in songs such as the 'vernal' waltz, Poisoning Pigeons in the Park, which was recorded for the album 'An Evening Wasted with Tom Lehrer' in March 1959. The lyrics refer to killing pigeons with cyanide-coated peanuts and strychnine-treated corn. The latter method was used by the United States Fish and Wildlife Service to control pigeon populations in Boston public areas during the 1950s. Available for concert band for the first time, this lovely melody deserves to be heard out in the open air to be enjoyed by those passing by, maybe unaware of the sinister nature of the song!

In 2006, Enya started work on a Christmas album of traditional carols and original tracks, but the idea was changed to a collection of songs with a Christmas or winter theme as it better suited the style of the new material. It was recorded with her long-time collaborators, arranger and producer Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan. Journey of the Angels is from this album, 'And Winter Came...' and was written in the style of what Enya described as a slow traditional carol; she chose it as a personal highlight. The song is dedicated to the American director and editor Tim Royes, who produced the music videos for Enya's songs Amarantine and It's in the Rain and died in 2007. This arrangement for concert band is part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide repertoire and features prominent parts for Cor Anglais (cued if not available) and tubular bells (chimes) to really bring out the wintery atmosphere. These wereChristian songs which described Bible stories (Joshua Fought the Battle of Jericho) or about living with the spiritof God (Every Time I Feel the Spirit). Sometimes the spirituals described the hardships of slavery (NobodyKnows the Trouble I've Seen). Most interestingly, some spirituals had hidden meanings. In Swing Low, SweetChariot it appears that the singer is talking about dying and going to heaven, but in actuality, home refers to aplace of freedom, and crossing the river Jordan means overcoming the obstacles to freedom.

But this one is upliftingAccidentally in Love is a song by American rock band Counting Crows. The song was written for the opening scene of the 2004 DreamWorks animated film Shrek 2 and appears on the movie's soundtrack as the opening track. It was released as a single on May 3, 2004, two weeks before the movie premiered in theaters. Published by John McAllister (A0.778226). Pitt Street Bridge was commissioned by the Moultrie Middle School Band to be premiered at the 2020 SCMEA Conference. The remains of the Pitt Street Bridge lie in the Intercoastal Waterway and in what is now called Pickett Bridge Recreation Area. It is within walking distance from the middle school, and it is an integral part of Mt. Pleasant’s history. Originally designed as a trolley bridge that connected Sullivan’s Island and Mount Pleasant, Pitt Street Bridge is now a haven for recreation and relaxation. The lively melodies throughout the piece depict the festive activities that take place on Pitt Street Bridge. The piece opens as though one is standing on the Pitt Street Bridge, gazing out at the immensely beautiful surroundings. Slow and serene as the sun blankets the harbor and the marsh. The bridge has a tremendous history, dating back to the revolutionary war, which is where the melody begins. Deconstructed from part of Sir Peter Parker, a song about the Battle of Sullivan’s Island. A distant memory, this melody will find itself in many ways throughout (three notes rising diatonically followed by a falling 3rd). The woodwinds pattern in the opening (which also appears throughout), represents the ripples in the water, flowing gently back and forth. The military past of the bridge is hinted at in two ways. The snare in the opening, reminiscent of the rudimental style and several harmonies throughout that hint at an Americana style. As the piece picks up tempo, the hustle and bustle of 1920s Charleston comes to life. Harmonically, everything is still built off of the foundation of the original tune, but now we’re in bright and joyous times and people are transported to and from the island in the Roarin’ 20s. The optimism abounds until the climax of the piece as the bridge (musically speaking), fades into the past. At the finale, one is standing on the bridge with the distant melody still played on the flute.

Born in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1887, Florence Price received early musical training from her mother, going on to study at the prestigious New England Conservatory of Music, graduating in 1906 with a Soloist’s Diploma in Organ Performance, and a Teacher’s Diploma in Piano Performance. After completing her degree, Price returned back to the south to teach music and after about 20 years, moved her family moved to Chicago to ultimately escape the racial tension in the south. It was here that she was able to properly establish herself as a concert pianist, organist and composer. She composed over 300 works, including 20 full orchestral pieces and over 110 art songs, many performed by leading American orchestras and esteemed vocalists. Price was the first African-American woman composer to earn national recognition. Seen as a pioneer among women, she was celebrated constantly for her achievements.Originally, written for organ, 'Adoration' (dating from 1951, just a few years before her death), is one of Florence Price’s best-known works, available in several different versions. Beginning in the 1930s, Price earned a living by playing organ in churches as well as in theatres. Adoration is a work of deep devotion and sincerity, a simple yet beautiful work suitable for church concerts and for remembrance/memorial events.

Soul Limbo is the seventh studio album by the American R&B band Booker T. & the M.G.'s, released in 1968 on Stax Records. The title track is perhaps best known in the UK as the theme tune for BBC Television's cricket coverage and later for Test Match Special. It features a marimba solo by Terry Manning and cowbell by Isaac Hayes (apparently captured in one successful take!) It references the Trinidadian dance and game The Limbo, which had a surge of popularity in the United States from the mid-1950s onwards. The song makes use of a common chord progression that was featured in such 1950s and 1960s hits as La Bamba, Louie Louie, and Wild Thing and this arrangement includes an open repeat to accommodate several soloists, as well as a separate drum solo spot, as desired.

The title is a reference to the Mona Lisa, the famous painting by Leonardo da Vinci, and to the song of the same name, originally performed by Nat King Cole, which was covered by Seal for the movie. Julia Roberts received a record $25 million for her performance, the highest ever earned by an actress at that time. Rachel Portman's score for the film is in a similar vein to her others for 'The Cider House Rules' and 'Chocolat', but the lovely flute theme in this suite works nicely for concert band and the combination of piano and vibraphone (originally harp) lend a pulsating texture throughout. Perfect for a quiet moment in a concert of film music and, of course, important music by a woman composer in a crowded market of male writers.
