Old 100th or Old Hundredth (also commonly called Old Hundred) is a hymn tune in Long Metre from Pseaumes Octante Trois de David (1551) (the second edition of the Genevan Psalter) and is one of the best-known melodies in all Christian musical traditions. The tune is usually attributed to the French composer Loys Bourgeois (c. 1510 – c.1560).Although the tune was first associated with Psalm 134 in the Genevan Psalter, the melody receives its current name from an association with the 100th Psalm, in a translation by William Kethe entitled All People that on Earth do Dwell. [Wikipedia] This arrangement is for either concert band or orchestra or any combination of both. There are parts for Eb and F Horns, 3rd Violin (sub-Viola) and an optional Piano/Organ (not on the score) part included in the PDF. The lyrics were written by Katharine Lee Bates, and the music was composed by church organist and choirmaster Samuel A. Ward at Grace Episcopal Church in Newark, New Jersey. The two never met. Bates originally wrote the words as a poem, Pikes Peak, first published in the Fourth of July edition of the church periodical The Congregationalist in 1895. At that time, the poem was titled America for publication. Ward had originally written the music, Materna, for the hymn O Mother dear, Jerusalem in 1882, though it was not first published until 1892. Ward's music combined with the Bates poem was first published in 1910 and titled America the Beautiful. The song is one of the most popular of the many U.S. patriotic songs. From 1894 to 1930 she was an editor at Lorenz Publishing Company, and at its periodicals The Choir Leader and The Organist. Born in Newark, Delaware, the only child of English parents she received her first musical training at an early age from her father, James Hindle, who was a singing teacher. The family moved around somewhat, but her compositions soon became noticed whilst living in Nashville, where she was a sought-after organist for multiple churches alongside her husband, John Ashford, as choirmaster. 'At Sunset' comes from a collection of voluntaries for organ (or harmonium), circa 1920, now freshly arranged for concert band as part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women into the worldwide repertoire.

Written all the way back in 1887, I can still hear the choir and congregation belting out this wonderful hymn, while the piano and organ accompany them at full force. This arrangement for elementary band begins with the verse in a very laid-back, cantabile style. The chorus then joins in, led by snare drums in a stirring march style. Great moving lower brass lead all to a big broad ending. The development of the theater organ came about to provide music and sound effects for the first three decades of the 20th Century. The tradition of iconic music themes carried well into radio, television, and in more modern times, video games.Growing up in New York City, I was able to view more than my fair-share of both movie house westerns, as well as TV shows. Saturday mornings were filled with Lone Ranger, Cisco Kid, and Hopalong Cassidy episodes with their own themes. The bad guy had his theme, as well as the good guy. You cheered, or you booed to the one you connected with. Big screen westerns almost always had their theme songs, and almost always sung by Frankie Laine.Western Legends is an homage to the radio, television, and film composers whose scores will always be etched on my mind.

While created in open scoring for beginning and young instrumentalists, these pieces could be used by anyone. They are accessible with as few as two players and as many as are available in almost any combination of instruments. The folk melodies are also excellent to use as warm-ups because they can serve the purpose while also providing aesthetic value. The teacher is encouraged to be flexible and creative with them. Directors are encouraged to perform these in various combinations and sets. Feel free to be creative. For example, repeats could be added featuring various soloists and/or small groupings in contrast with the full group (as in a concerto.) Creativity could be promoted by allowing students to make suggestions pertaining to the formal organization of the material. In addition to decisions as to which pieces to perform directors are encouraged to involve students in making creative decisions such as which ones to put together, which phrases to repeat in various combinations and instrumental subsets and other appropriate aesthetic decisions. Each piece could function as a locus for branching into various content areas in connection with social studies, integrated curriculum and/or inquiry. Many of the melodies have very smooth and conjunct voice leading making them excellent for solfege/sight-reading training. These melodies are offered as a resource for the teacher to use in a variety of ways and possibilities are unlimited. Lyrics are readily available online.
