Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

La Tomatina was composed in 1996 in Buñol, Spain while I was researching Spanish band music. Buñol is a small town of about 9,000 inhabitants about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from Spain’s 3rd largest city, Valencia. For 364 days of the year, it is a typical small town, but on the last Wednesday of August it becomes an international attraction. On that day the La Tomatina festival is held. Several trucks drop as many as 145,000 kilograms of tomatoes unto the main street and for an hour at 12:00 noon there are up to 100,000 people taking part in throwing tomatoes at each other. At 1:00 everybody goes to the specialpublic showers to wash up. A fire truck comes down the street washing down the buildings and the main street and by about 2:00 all is returned to normal and all references to the tomato fight are gone. Thetradition has been going on since 1945. I was in the streets taking part in throwing tomatoes for three years. After that when I was in Spain during the festival I watched it on TV.Buñol also has a rich tradition of having two very good concert bands – the Litros and the Feos. Most of the 9,000 inhabitants formally belong to one of the two social clubs. There are several band competitionsheld in Spain and both of these bands take part. The band competition is fierce as bragging rights are won by the winning society. It is thought that this fierce competition is what helps develop excellentmusicians in that many young people become professional musicians and play in many orchestras and bands throughout the country.La Tomatina was premiered by the U. S. Army Band Pershing’s Own on the U. S. Capital steps in June 1996, the composer conducting. La Tomatina is the second movement of SinfonÃa de Valencia, a three- movement composition that was premiered in Buñol by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Francisco Tamarit in August 1997. SinfonÃa de Valencia is recorded by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Fernando Bonete Piqueras on Mark Records (CD3816). It also won the IBLA Grand Prize in Sicily, Italy in 1998 and was a Semi Finalist as part of the American Prize Composition Competition – Band Division in 1996.This arrangement of La Tomatina was prepared especially for conductor Natalia Montañés in 2004. In thisarrangement there are four percussionists instead of the original five.La Tomatina has been very popular among bands around the world, performed over one hundred times.

Published by Fabrizio Brezzo (A0.896391). Pasquale Anfossi (5 April 1727 – February 1797) was an Italian opera composer. Born in Taggia, Liguria, he studied with Niccolò Piccinni and Antonio Sacchini, and worked mainly in London, Venice and Rome.He wrote more than 80 operas, both opera seria and opera buffa, although he concentrated on church music, especially oratorios, during his last years. Anfossi died in Rome in 1797.As an operatic composer, Anfossi remained forgotten for a long time, despite his great popularity with his contemporaries, because his works were overshadowed by those of Salieri, Rossini and Mozart. Nevertheless, Johann Wolfgang von Goethe staged Anfossi's farsetta La maga Circe (Circe, the Sorceress) in his role as the theatre director of Weimar. He adapted the libretto with Christian August Vulpius and also made plans for a continuation, which never came to bear.Only in the last 20 years has Anfossi's work been appreciated anew, through diverse productions such as Giuseppe riconosciuto. His work was featured at the 2005 Salzburg Summer Festival.Fabrizio Brezzo, this arranger, lives in Taggia, the town where Anfossi was born.In the second half of this symphony, you can hear the theme that Mozart used, 9 years later, for his Confutatis maledictis of the requiem mass.

In 1871, Holmès became a French national and added the accent to her last name. She wrote the texts to almost all of her vocal music herself, including songs, oratorios, the libretto of her opera ('La Montagne noire') and the programmatic poems for her symphonic poems including 'Irlande' and 'Andromède'. Like other female composers from the nineteenth century including Fanny Mendelssohn and Clara Schumann, Holmès published some of her earlier works under a male pseudonym (Hermann Zenta) because women in European society at that time were not taken seriously as artists and were discouraged from publishing. 'Clair de Lune' is the second of the 'Trois Petites Pièces' for flute and piano, composed in 1896, bring together the homelands dear to Holmès’ heart: Ireland, her country of origin, and France, her country of adoption. Ascending Everest is an exciting new work for Concert Band that endeavors to create the varying moods that I imagine would accompany such an incredible undertaking as scaling the world's tallest mountain.The piece opens with a dramatic minor chord as the behemoth is viewed in person for the first time. It then quickly delves into the business at hand with a mixture of excitement and forboding. The middle section represents the first night's base camp, as weariness and doubt cause the climber great trepidation over what is yet to come. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? The tone begins a subtle change as renewed determination sets in, and the climax rings of victory!This work is for Concert Band, however the standard instrumentation is not strictly adhered to. In my experience, most high school or community bands don't have anyone to play bassoon and so I elected not create such a part. Also, you will note that there is no Percussion 2. It premiered at the 1987 Tokyo International Film Festival, earning widespread positive reviews from critics and was also a commercial success. Louis Lambert (1863). ♫ arranged for concert band by Stephen R Dalrymple ♫ After a family trip to Gettysburg, Antietam, Harper’s Ferry, and Ford Theater, I created a concert band arrangement to solidify the trip in my mind using a popular Civil War song from the North, “Abraham’s Daughter,†and a song used by both North and South, “Johnny Comes Marching Home.†♫ Music was a means for soldiers to release the tensions of war. By December 1861 the Union army had 28,000 musicians in 618 bands, not counting soldiers who travelled with violins and other musical instruments. Soldiers often sang as they marched by day and at night in camp. Musical duels were not uncommon between Union and Confederate bands. This idea inspired the last section of the arranger where the 2 songs are played against each other. ♫ Septimus Winner wrote “Abraham’s Daughter†in 1861 for the Minstrel stage. “Abraham’s Daughter†pictures a fresh recruit that is on his way to Washington DC to be processed and trained for future battles. ♫ Given the unpublished verses we have, Abraham’s Daughter was undoubtedly sung and embellished by Union soldiers as they travelled from battlefield to battlefield. ♫ Winner is also known for writing “Ten Little Injuns†“Listen to the Mockingbird†and “Where, Oh Where Has My Little Dog Gone?†♫ Abraham Lincoln had 4 sons, Robert Todd, Edward Baker, William Wallace, and Thomas (Tad); but no daughters. So, who is Abraham’s daughter? ♫ Oh! Should you ask me who she am, Columbia is her name, sir; She is the child of Abraham, Or Uncle Sam, the same, sir. Now if I fight, why ain't I right? And don't you think I oughter. Sometimes we see patterns as events unfold in our lives. Departures was written following and during a time when I witnessed a number of people leaving-moving away, taking a different path in life, or leaving this life altogether. A single, sighing motive unites all three sections of this piece. It is heard right away in the flutes, takes a yearning tone in the middle section, and returns wistfully at the end of the piece. As with every departure in life, one is left wondering what the arrival will be like. The first and last sections of the piece are in a moderate to slow 6/8 while the middle is in 4/4. There are brief solos for horn, alto sax, and oboe (cued in clarinet). The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. War, by its nature, claims the lives of those who enter it, and over the course of history, many have fallen in the service of their countries who have gone to war for one reason or another. Fanfare for the Fallen seeks to honor those who have fallen in service and conjure the image of them marching into their glorious afterlife. Christianity holds that there is no greater love than laying down one's life for another, and many cultures believe that dying in battle yields glory in the great beyond. So whether marching into heaven, Valhalla or some other bright light at the end of the tunnel, let this music provide the soundtrack of trumpeting angels and one last ticker tape parade as these warriors are welcomed into their eternal home.This is a piece of intermediate difficulty with a nice melody and a John Williams' Olympic Fanfare feel to it. While the trumpets soar in their high registers for the heralding sections, the range for the rest of the piece (and the rest of the band) stays mostly in the center of the instruments. While 32nd notes are found here and there, the tempo sitting at around 80 keeps their difficulty, as well as the 16th note woodwind runs, in check. George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.

Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank. Symphonie fantastique is a piece of program music that tells the story of an artist gifted with a lively imagination who has poisoned himself with opium in the depths of despair because of hopeless, unrequited love. Berlioz provided his own preface and program notes for each movement of the work. Convinced that his love is spurned, the artist poisons himself with opium. The dose of narcotic, while too weak to cause his death, plunges him into a heavy sleep accompanied by the strangest of visions. He dreams that he has killed his beloved, that he is condemned, led to the scaffold and is witnessing his own execution. The procession advances to the sound of a march that is sometimes sombre and wild, and sometimes brilliant and solemn, in which a dull sound of heavy footsteps follows without transition the loudest outbursts. At the end of the march, the first four bars of the idée fixe reappear like a final thought of love interrupted by the fatal blow. Berlioz claimed to have written the fourth movement in a single night, reconstructing music from an unfinished project, the opera Les francs-juges. The movement begins with timpani sextuplets in thirds, for which he directs: The first quaver of each half-bar is to be played with two drumsticks, and the other five with the right hand drumsticks. The movement proceeds as a march filled with blaring horns and rushing passages, and scurrying figures that later show up in the last movement. NOTES: - The two timpani part can be played by only the 2 pairs of timpani. - Measure 93 and 100: Clarinet 1, 2 and 3 play one octave lower as written.

Commissioned by Mitch Sturman in memory of our mutual friend, composer John B. Edmondson (1933-2016). Mr. Sturman had commissioned new works for the Wilson Jr. H. S. Warrior Band in El Centro, CA for nine years for annual Concerts of Premieres. John B. Edmondson, one of America's leading composers of educational music, with over 800 compositions and arrangements in his catalog, had been commissioned by Mitch seven times for new works, including his last ever composition, Imperial County Impressions performed in May, 2016, prior to Mr. Sturman's retirement in June, 2016. The first commission John had made for Mitch was his Serenade for Solo Clarinet and Band. Mitch felt it would be a fitting tribute for me to compose a work also for solo clarinet and band. This was composed for a memorial tribute concert for John B. Edmondson at Wilson Junior High School on April 6, 2017, where the seven pieces commissioned for the Wilson Band would be performed. The solo clarinet, first clarinet, and first trumpet require moderately experienced players to play the parts musically. All the rest of the parts are easily handled by a typical junior high school band.

I started writing Shindig Shenanigans in the summer of 2019 and I had a specific mood or feeling of celebration in my mind when doing so however due to other commissions and work I never finished it, coming back to it intermittently over the next couple of years. Between March and June 2021, I made some final edits and finished the piece off. The piece is a celebration as implied in the title, ‘Shindig’ is a party and ‘Shenanigans’ are silly or high-spirited behavior and or mischief that people have at that party. I thought it was appropriate now as we finally start to move out of restrictions that we have seen and experience over the last year and a half. Shindig Shenanigans is a great concert opener or encore piece to your concert and gives the players plenty to work with both technical and melodically. .

In the triello scene, after a very tense wait, Blonde kills Sentenza, while Tuco, whose gun was discharged during the night by his companion, finds himself unarmed and at his mercy. But Blonde spares him, reveals to him that no name is indicated on the stone, and forces him to dig in the unknown man's grave next to Stanton's. The two thus come into possession of the dollars, but Blonde plays one last atrocious prank on Tuco: while the latter was digging he prepared a noose hanging from a tree, and forces the bandit to stick his neck through it while balancing precariously on a cross wooden. Then he ties his hands, and before his incredulous eyes he loads half the loot onto Sentenza's horse and walks away. He will save him in the usual way, shooting the rope from afar, amidst the bandit's begging, tears and finally insults.

NOTES: This setting of the Holly & the Ivy Christmas carol is depicted musically as a walk through the woods. Listeners will hear the sound of a woodpecker, dove, and the rustling and shivering of animals in trilling winds amidst chilling harmonies. Following the statement of the carol theme in brass echoed by glockenspiel, a beautiful snowfall enhances this musical winter scene. PERFORMANCE NOTES: An inexpensive plastic dove bird call can easily be obtained at a sporting goods store, and these work quite well. If needed, it can be amplified from a speaker placed in the back with the percussion setup. A synthesized harp part played by a keyboard is included with glissandos written out & cues are provided in complete absence of the harp or synthesizer. English Horn & Double Bass can be omitted and aren’t integral to the piece. Probably a grade 4 piece. Roughly 3 mins in duration.
