This was a special honor to be sure, but what made this commission so much more special to me was that the President of the Kansas Bandmasters was my former high school band director. I can safely say that my experience with him is the reason I chose music as a career.To write a piece for this prestigious organization was the thrill of a lifetime for me.In writing Escape Velocity, I envisioned the journey of a rocket ship entering space. It begins with the launch and all of the dangers and excitement of the ascent. Resistance is met while trying to escape Earth's gravity before finally reaching orbit. Space is beautiful and its majesty and wonder is reflected in the music. The conclusion depicts the reentering of Earth's orbit and the final descent to splashdown. I envisioned this piece to be more of a tone painting than a programmatic work, though I'm sure it would work just fine to have a video of a space launch projected in the background of your performance!Escape Velocity was commission by the Kansas Bandmasters Association, Dennis Kerr, President, and was premiered on July 19th, 2013 by theKBAMiddle Level Honor Band with Richard Saucedo conducting.

Published by Joseph Hasper (A0.1153134). There are five main sections in this piece, each lasting exactly 21 measures. Why this unlikely number? I chose this number because the percussion parts, which are the driving force behind the piece, are based repeating patterns of 6, 7, and 8 eighth notes. It works out that these patterns only line up every 168 half-beats—which happens only at the end of 21 measures! The title for this piece was provided by Armstrong High School student Aaron Baker and was used as inspiration for the work. The phrase “endless routes†guided my decision to have several main themes instead of just one or two. The themes are widely different in character but share the feature that they each go to the same place—the very last half of the last beat of every twenty-first measure. The Minimalist style of music often features short musical fragments that are repeated many times in different combinations, and I used that technique to create a seemingly “endless†effect in the percussion parts. The percussion parts also use a colotomic structure, a technique often used in gamelan music of the far East. Unlike Western music, which generally has a strong accent on the first beat of a phrase, colotomic music accents the last beat of a phrase. You can hear this in Endless Routes when the percussion parts all become aligned and hit a simultaneous accent at the end of each section. This piece was commissioned and premiered by the Armstrong High School, under the direction of Jason Venesky. Mr. Venesky is a veteran teacher with over twenty years of experience in the Armstrong School District. He is a graduate of Carnegie Mellon University with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Music Performance (Tuba) and Music Education Certification and an active performer as Principal Tuba for the Butler County Symphony Orchestra; tubaist for the Armstrong Brass Quintet and Windsor Brass Quintet; and Bass Trombonist for the Gibbons Big Band. Mr. Venesky is currently Instructor of Tuba at Grove City College and Music Director for the Kittanning Community Band. Includes a full score and complete set of parts.

El Camino Real (The Kings Highway) was a trail first established by the Spanish in the 1700's, along which the Franciscan fathers traveled to establish missions. In the 1800's it was used as a stagecoach route by settlers. This piece is a musical depiction of the stagecoach ride which originated in Mexico, came through San Antonio and Austin, passed through the hill country of Texas and continued through Louisiana, ending in Mississippi. The trail crossed 12 rivers, including the Rio Grande. El Camino Real from A Texas Symphony is also stand alone piece, and is about 12 minutes in length.. The music begins with a Spanish flair in Mexico, features a beautiful sunrise over the river, hill country bird calls, travels in the coach through the city of Fredericksburg incorporating a polka theme, and then travels out the state.

With other birds, it lives at Helia's bar where they are treated with great affection. The feeling of preservation combined with freedom was the inspiration for the composition of this piece that uses two genres as a base, the ijexá and the maxixe. The rhythmic characteristics of each of these genres were distributed among the instruments and guided by a cheerful melody. An opportunity to expand the repertoire and immerse in the rhythm and fusion of these two genres, ijexá and maxixe. After a busy and hectic week, you have nothing scheduled. Your wife and kids are happily occupied with things that don't involve you. Time to mentally check out, retreat to the man cave and find something to do that doesn't involve anything other than what is physically in front of you. On the radio in the background, there are some old blokes musing laconically about football. You don't really know what you'll be doing, but it will involve tools and not giving a flip about anything else for a little while. You may even need to make a trip to the hardware store at some stage... who knows? Tooling-a-Round is the first movement of what is (planned to be) a multi-movement work for concert band, depicting the cherished role of backyard shed in the life of a typical suburban middle-aged family man. Quavers are to be played rhythmically swung, with articulations observed whole-heatedly to highlight the playful and irreverent mood throughout - staccato markings in particular are to be exaggerated. The sound of real tools should be used in the percussion parts where indicated (e.g. saw, file, hammer, toolbox, circular saw, power drill etc.) with rhythms to be approximated in order to give the impression of a project getting underway as the piece progresses and the protagonist meanders from one task to the next.This piece is dedicated to busy fathers who work hard to preserve their capacity to create, play and explore.
