Christmas Carols - Grade 3 - Total duration: approx. 8:10 minThe Silent Trilogy is a compilation of three traditional European Advent and Christmas carols arranged for various quintet ensembles (brass-, saxophone- and horn-quintet) and finally also for wind band. The trilogy consists of the songs Alle Jahre wieder, Es wird scho 'glei' dumpa and Stille Nacht. The colorful arrangements represent harmonic variations around the ever-present melody of the original songs.Alle Jahre wieder (Every year again, Audio-Demo from the beginning) is a well-known Christmas carol from the German-speaking area. The melody comes from Friedrich Silcher, the text was written by Wilhelm Hey in 1837.Es wird scho 'glei' dumpa (It will be dark soon, Audio-Demo from 2:15) is an Austrian nativity scene song based on the melody of a traditional Marian song. The text was written by Anton Reidinger in relation to a historical nativity play in Bad Ischl and published around 1884.Stille Nacht (Silent Night, Audio-Demo from 4:55) is one of the most famous Christmas carols. It was performed for the first time on December 24, 1818 with the melody by Franz Xaver Gruber and the text by Joseph Mohr in Salzburg. Since then, the song has been translated into countless languages and sung all over the world.The PDF contains the Score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. No duplication of parts necessary - so, just print and go. It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol†but with the lyric:“God bless you, Merry Gentleman!May nothing you dismay!â€The phrase “God rest you merry†historically meant “may God grant you peace and happinessâ€. “Rest you merry†was used both in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Julietâ€. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ‘merry’ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.“Pat-A-Pan†is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric “tu-re-lu-re-lu†for the sound of a flute.“Yigdal†is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. First sung in the 15th Century and first published int he 16th Century, this hymn is still popular in the 21st Century. In multiple different contexts, the hymn compares the beauty of Christmas to that of a lovely rose. The most common harmonization to this melody was composted by Michael Praetorius in 1609, and the original part-writing contains elements of the Renaissance madrigal. Although this band arrangement is rescored with different part-writing, it pays some homage to the musical traditions employed in the original carol. This theme and variations is a mixture of four different scoring methods: modern Christmas Carol; gently-applied lyrical contemporary; Renaissance imitation; and a bombastic, Romantic orchestral finish. This piece features multiple subtle musical sensibilities and a gentle introduction into the world of mixed meter. I sincerely hope you enjoy this arrangement!

Jolly Old Saint Nicholas is a Christmas song that originated with a poem by Emily Huntington Miller (1833-1913), published as Lilly's Secret in The Little Corporal Magazine in December 1865. The song's lyrics have also been attributed to Benjamin Hanby, who wrote a similar song in the 1860s, Up on the Housetop. However, the lyrics now in common use closely resemble Miller's 1865 poem.The music has been attributed to John Piersol McCaskey, a school principal and former Mayor of Lancaster, Pennsylvania, who claimed to have written the song in 1867. The Johnny mentioned in the song who wants a pair of skates is McCaskey's late son, John, who died as a child. Puer nobis nascitur, usually translated as Unto Us is Born a Son, is a medieval Christmas carol found in a number of manuscript sources - the 14th-century German Moosburg Gradual and a 15th-century Trier manuscript. The song was first published in the 1582 Finnish songbook Piae Cantiones, a volume of 74 medieval songs with Latin texts… The carol became popular as a processional hymn following a translation by George Ratcliffe Woodward (1859-1934) first published in 1902. Percy Dearmer also translated the hymn for inclusion in the 1928 Oxford Book of Carols as Unto Us a Boy is Born. Both translations are commonly used. [Wikipedia] This is the version of the words used here… Unto us a boy is born, King of all creation: Cradled in a stall was He, The Lord of every nation, The Lord of every nation.
