In 1906, a shorter version for piano solo was published, which uses fewer thems and omits the narration. This version uses the original 1902 version as a basis. This is the full score. The work may be performed as a concert band number, or the orchestration may be used to perform the original ballet. The “stoptime†effects at the end of the piece are especially effective in the version with dancers. I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl†when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts†or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.

However, in this arrangement, cheekily translated as Let It Snow … But Quietly, the well-known melody in 6/8 time is presented in 4/4 time with a soul treatment. Written by Robbie van Leeuwen, the song topped the charts in nine countries. It has since been covered dozens of times by many artists. In 1986, English girl group Bananarama covered Venus for their third studio album, True Confessions, with the single reaching number one in six countries and has been featured in numerous films, television shows, and commercials. Venus had been a part of Bananarama's repertoire for several years before they actually recorded it. The group's three members, Sara Dallin, Siobhan Fahey and Keren Woodward had the idea of turning the song into a dance tune, but they were met with resistance from their producers at the time, Steven Jolley and Tony Swain. The group brought the idea to the production trio of Stock Aitken Waterman, and it became Bananarama's first collaboration with them. The track was initially produced in an arrangement more faithful to the Shocking Blue original, but was reworked in hi-NRG style after Fahey suggested that their version should sound similar to Dead or Alive's You Spin Me Round (Like a Record).
