We present a work composed as a tongue-in-cheek expression of a popular street tune heard today, put through a series of 5 variations that explore different styles. It works in both a satirical as well as sophisticated manner vertically and horizontally, and uses multiple cliches that will get the audience perking up in recognition. The theme, 贺新年, is a common tune sung in Chinese New Year celebrations. In the heart of celebrating the New Year, this piece is written playable by musicians of all ages, whether in schools or as community orchestras and bands, to come together by the common celebratory notion in a work for an extended orchestra, including the saxophone and euphonium. Written by Daniel Cheng and Jeremy Goh, we hope that this season this piece can bring both laughter and reverence to the street tune, blown out of proportion in style and size. Starting the work is an atonal entry, built on tone rows and planing, legacies of Shoenberg and his contemporaries, before decomposing into an exceedingly lively statement of the theme. This is then juxtaposed beside a trip to tribal communities with interlocking rhythms and a modal distortion of the melody. From the modal mess and deviation from diatonicism, we then return to the prim and proper style of Mozart and Haydn in a short Classical variation. As if to mock its neat stature, this then is shattered with a juxtaposition beside a variation in the style of Shostakovich, modelled after the controversial Leningrad symphony, which draws on a different dimension of the theme, its banality, and propagating and emulsifying it to terrifying levels as it is distorted. Finally, a schreckenfanfare is directed marking an entry into a tribute to one of the greatest legends in music composition, with Beethoven along with its transcendental qualities of cyclism, and use of learned styles, methods of maintaining tension etc., bringing a grand ending to the 10 minute long work.

La Tomatina was composed in 1996 in Buñol, Spain while I was researching Spanish band music. Buñol is a small town of about 9,000 inhabitants about 19 miles (30 kilometers) from Spain’s 3rd largest city, Valencia. For 364 days of the year, it is a typical small town, but on the last Wednesday of August it becomes an international attraction. On that day the La Tomatina festival is held. Several trucks drop as many as 145,000 kilograms of tomatoes unto the main street and for an hour at 12:00 noon there are up to 100,000 people taking part in throwing tomatoes at each other. At 1:00 everybody goes to the specialpublic showers to wash up. A fire truck comes down the street washing down the buildings and the main street and by about 2:00 all is returned to normal and all references to the tomato fight are gone. Thetradition has been going on since 1945. I was in the streets taking part in throwing tomatoes for three years. After that when I was in Spain during the festival I watched it on TV.Buñol also has a rich tradition of having two very good concert bands – the Litros and the Feos. Most of the 9,000 inhabitants formally belong to one of the two social clubs. There are several band competitionsheld in Spain and both of these bands take part. The band competition is fierce as bragging rights are won by the winning society. It is thought that this fierce competition is what helps develop excellentmusicians in that many young people become professional musicians and play in many orchestras and bands throughout the country.La Tomatina was premiered by the U. S. Army Band Pershing’s Own on the U. S. Capital steps in June 1996, the composer conducting. La Tomatina is the second movement of SinfonÃa de Valencia, a three- movement composition that was premiered in Buñol by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Francisco Tamarit in August 1997. SinfonÃa de Valencia is recorded by the band of Centro Instructivo Musical El Litro Buñol, conducted by Fernando Bonete Piqueras on Mark Records (CD3816). Bringing folk melodies into modern repertoire has a long tradition, with many iconic works simultaneously celebrating and preserving melodies which might otherwise have been lost to history. Here we have the opportunity to celebrate and preserve a melody just as it starts to find its way in the musical world. By the time Debbie Friedman died in January 2011, just shy of her 60th birthday, she had created a large collection of music loved throughout the world’s Jewish community. She embodied the idea that each generation has a responsibility to contribute to the canon of sacred music, and her settings of liturgical texts have been sung regularly for decades. Her setting of Mi Shebeirach, the prayer for healing, is likely her most familiar tune, but Shalom Aleichem is a beautiful capstone to her legacy. It was in an early stage at the time of her death, having shared the melody among a few groups. This melody has since been sung worldwide, beginning with Friedman’s own memorial and the following Sabbath of Song (Shabbat Shira), and it has begun to take its rightful place in the liturgical canon. The music here is ordered as it would be sung: starting with a presentation of the chorus theme by clarinets in SATB choir voicing, with more of the band joining-in with each repetition of the theme or chorus. The melody and countermelodies move among the different sections until the full band has taken up the tune while the euphonium, horn, and clarinet weave a contrapuntal line through it. Slowly, the joy of the full band is stripped away, exposing the more solemn sound of a brass choir, juxtaposing the joy brought to so many by Ms. Friedman during her life with a quiet reflection at its end.Â

Born in 1485, Hernando Cortez was a Spanish adventurer rewarded for his courage and skills in battle. In the spring of 1519 with 11 ships and 700 men, he landed on the newly discovered gulf coast of Mexico looking for gold that was rumored to be found there. To ensure that none of his men deserted him, he burned all except one of his fleet of ships. He quickly conquered the Aztec empire and its emperor Montezuma. There, he eventually killed Montezuma and seized the gold and treasure that had belonged to the Aztecs for centuries. By the end of 1520, he had won Mexico for Spain and put it under Spanish rule. As a reward, King Charles V of Spain made him governor and captain general of Mexico. He died in Seville, Spain in 1536. Although Cortez’ aims were for conquest and gold – many which resulted in suffering and misery for the Aztecs, there were interesting cultural side effects as Spain ruled Mexico. Ancient Indian folk tunes and ceremonial music were suddenly intermixed with the higher culture of the baroque and renaissance music from Spain. Much of what we now know of today in the way of Latin styles of music owes its roots to the invasion of Cortez and culture changes he inadvertently brought with him. The Golden Helmet Of Cortez musically commemorates the story of Cortez as he landed in Mexico on that spring day in 1519. The piece is a compilation of many Latin and Mexican musical styles. Some of these are light in style, others evoke the battles that took place. These are all brought together in an exciting programmatic style to be enjoyed by all. 2016 Arrangement New Release.

On December 14, 2012, at 9:35 a.m., the entire country stood motionless, for a horrific act of terror was underway. Adam Lanza shot and killed 20 first-graders and 6 adults, at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Connecticut; a moment in history as one of the worst school shootings that our country has ever faced. Every single child which was murdered had a future of their own, taken away at the hands of a ruthless gunman, who in an instant, ended any chance that these 20 children had to have a happy life. Along with these children, were the 6 heroic staff members who so selflessly gave their life in order to stop this perpetrator who came to destroy the fragile object that we all call life. The title of this piece, The Sandy Hook Lullaby, is symbolic to represent the deaths and aftermath on that faithful day. This particular piece is a lullaby to represent the day that the victims lives were taken, ending with a peaceful goodbye. The song starts strong and valiant, to represent the beginning and potential of a new day. As it progresses, the song softens a bit, with clarinet lead, which represents the students learning in the classroom and the staff working as normal. A swell in volume represents the knowledge learned, as they are completely unaware of the events to follow. Halfway through, terror strikes. The percussion solo is representative of the the 5 minutes that the entire attack took place. The entire finale of the song is to represent the peaceful rest of those murdered, the final goodbye. The song ends softly, as the victims are put to rest, and because most of the victims were children, this comes in the form of a lullaby. Just as a loving and caring parent would put their child to sleep with a song, we give our final goodbyes with this Sandy Hook Lullaby. Isaiah 9:2* Humility seeks to draw attention to the Advent portion of the holiday season. This programmatic composition seeks to create an aural picture of the atmosphere both physically and spiritually in the eastern world B. C. and then try and connect it to Christmas traditions today. Students will really enjoyed rehearsing and performing this piece because of it’s programmatic nature, use of a plethora of percussion as well as some unusual uses of and combinations of instruments. Piccolo flute in the low register, soprano saxophone, open tom drums and oboe to create some Middle Eastern ambiance. Then, in order to create ‘the land of the shadow of death’ some unusual techniques call for whispers through instruments, french horns ringing their hands in and out of the bell, flutes playing on the head joints only, attaching a tenor saxophone mouthpiece to a euphonium and a baritone saxophone mouthpiece to a sousaphone. Add some trumpets and trombones playing only on their lead pipes and double reeds buzzing on just the reed and a haunting canvas to build the chaos of a world without salvation is created. Then, with the calming of the piano to present an extremely stark and hallow arrangement of the 7th century antiphon Veni Immanuel, ‘O Come, O Come Immanuel’ which crescendos to the coming of the savior at measure 128 precipitates the a highly antiphonal arrangement of ‘Joy to World.’ The piece concludes with the same chord it started with-a bright C major! This is done in the beginning to show the intention of a beautiful creation story without death and in the end as kind of a, this is just the beginning, sentiment by way of a half cadence. After all, in regards to this composition, Christmas day is just the beginning of the purpose of the Word made flesh. Galveston, (from A Texas Symphony,) is the first movement of five Texas pieces that are musical illustrations of historical events that took place in Texas. Galveston, tells the story of the Battle of Three Trees fought between Jean Lafitte's pirates and the Karankawa Indians, Feb.21, 1821. The battle was a result of the pirates capturing a Karankawa Indian maiden, and the Indians retaliating by capturing one of Lafitte's men. The U.S. Calvary arrived and assisted, and after a three day battle, 21 Indians were killed, and no pirates or U.S. Calvary soldiers were lost. The battle took place by a grove of trees then known as Campeche Cove, known today as Pirates' Cove, on the West end of Galveston. The music is about 12 minutes in length, scored for orchestra. Galveston is traditional romantic style program music. Strings open the piece with a wave theme designed to portray a pirate sailing ship in the Gulf of Mexico, then flows into a pirate theme, followed by a kidnapping theme, and Indian pow-wow with war drums, then the three day fight begins. There is a historical marker at Pirates' Cove erected in 1936 by the Texas Hwy Dept. to commemorate the Battle Of Three Trees.

It was on Slane Hill around 433 AD that St. Patrick defied a royal edict by lighting candles on Easter Eve. High King Logaire of Tara had decreed that no one could light a fire before Logaire began the pagan spring festival by lighting a fire on Tara Hill. Logaire was so impressed by Patrick’s devotion that, despite his defiance (or perhaps because of it), he let him continue his missionary work. Throughout the music, I try to represent the movement of the water and the wind, and the turning of the tide. This piece utilises binary form to create two specific images from the day. The first part is driving along the esplanade observing the wind and the waves, as well as the occasional landmark (i.e.: Luna Park, the sea baths, and the St. Kilda beach). The particular memory that remains in mind is the significant number of jellyfish that had beached themselves on the shoreline: dying on the sand, completely helpless.

The Esplanade is a musical image of the St. Kilda Esplanade on a windy winter day in the middle of August. Throughout the music, I try to represent the movement of the water and the wind, and the turning of the tide. This piece utilises binary form to create two specific images from the day. The first part is driving along the esplanade observing the wind and the waves, as well as the occasional landmark (i.e.: Luna Park, the sea baths, and the St. Kilda beach). The particular memory that remains in mind is the significant number of jellyfish that had beached themselves on the shoreline: dying on the sand, completely helpless.

In all fields of life, new findings are attained by science and research, more and more can be explained, a well-founded understanding of the things around is going to be achieved. However, the mysterious will still persist. Every new perception leads to further questions, new secrets are rising for being explored. Moreover, someone might perceive that in relation to the entire knowledge gained by mankind, the individual is shrinking. Thus, until the end of time the world will stay mysterious - the world seems to be a persistent secret, that wants to be discovered at all times anew.The musical motif of the Question begins with the very first sound of the piece - a dissonance that is harmoniously resolved again. This motif reflects the curiosity that lies dormant in all people. The dissonance creates a tension that can be seen as an impetus for the search for answers. The resolution to a major chord describes the confidence of being able to find an answer to the question. This musical motif runs through the entire work, both in the dreamy bliss of being and in the dramatic passages in which the flood of questions seems to become frightening. In such sections, the dissonance is turning into a minor chord. At the dramatic climax, a tense dominant seventh chord leads to the resolution to major, which finally describes the euphoria after the answer of a very difficult question. After a further phase of relaxation, the gaze wanders over nature in all its glory. Until towards the end of the piece, the awareness finally sets in that every answer found raises a new question and thus the mystery remains forever.The PDF contains the score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. Cururu is one of the genres of Brazilian country music that inspired the creation of this song. This song tells the story of a country person who went to live in the metropolis and reflected that it was all illusion when she was confronted with the violence and ambition typical of the big city, making her miss the simple life in the countryside. The wood stove, the mud on the ground, riding in a cart, milking the cow, eating fruit from the tree, the freedom to walk without worry are memories that lead her to believe that God willing she will one day return to her origins. This instrumental version included three solos that can be replaced by improvisation. The main melody and counterpoints alternate between suits, with the use of voicings characteristic of the style. Without a doubt, it's an excellent opportunity to expand your band's repertoire with authentically Brazilian music.

Published by Indie Classical Publications (A0.971801). A TRAIN THROUGH YORKSHIRE is one of my earliest works for band. Composed in 2007, it was inspired by the train rides I took while studying abroad in Great Britain. The Yorkshire area is especially beautiful, and the music was inspired by my memory of sitting on a train with a tea in hand on a drizzly day. However, I was never fully satisfied with the work, as it felt incomplete. One reason was that I was rushed to meet a short deadline when composing this piece. It wasn't until the summer of 2018 that I decided to do it justice and revise it. This new and final version is a little shorter than the original and offers a better balanced orchestration. Level: grade 3+ (medium) Duration: About 5 minutes, 15 seconds
