Galveston, (from A Texas Symphony,) is the first movement of five Texas pieces that are musical illustrations of historical events that took place in Texas. Galveston, tells the story of the Battle of Three Trees fought between Jean Lafitte's pirates and the Karankawa Indians, Feb.21, 1821. The battle was a result of the pirates capturing a Karankawa Indian maiden, and the Indians retaliating by capturing one of Lafitte's men. The U.S. Calvary arrived and assisted, and after a three day battle, 21 Indians were killed, and no pirates or U.S. Calvary soldiers were lost. The battle took place by a grove of trees then known as Campeche Cove, known today as Pirates' Cove, on the West end of Galveston. The music is about 12 minutes in length, scored for orchestra. Galveston is traditional romantic style program music. Strings open the piece with a wave theme designed to portray a pirate sailing ship in the Gulf of Mexico, then flows into a pirate theme, followed by a kidnapping theme, and Indian pow-wow with war drums, then the three day fight begins. There is a historical marker at Pirates' Cove erected in 1936 by the Texas Hwy Dept. to commemorate the Battle Of Three Trees.

I’D RATHER BE BLUE, THINKING OF YOU (than be happy with somebody else) was originally recorded by pioneering American songstress Fanny Brice in 1929. Since then it was featured in her biography “Funny Girl†when it was sung (and danced on roller-skates!) by Barbra Streisand. This is a FLEXIBLE ORCHESTRATION which implies that it is intended for community bands, bands in small schools, club bands etc. and can be played, not only by full bands or orchestras but by incomplete bands and bands that are made up of almost any mixture of instrument that you can imagine. To achieve this, the music is made up of five “Parts†or voices which are defined by pitch and key e.g. Part II Bb – Trumpet, Clarinet, Tenor saxophone etc. To those five are added additional parts for percussion, tuned percussion, piano and voice. I should mention here that, besides regular band or orchestral instruments, it is possible to include less used instruments such as harmonica, piano-accordion, ukulele, electric guitar – the list is endless! Lastly, it is possible to use flexible orchestrations for chamber groups of any size. They can be chosen by instrument family e.g. Woodwind quintet, or by particular instrument e.g. Clarinet Trio.

Donuts, if you make a mistake!The initial incarnation of these studies were written for trombone quartet and we would play them in the Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir with the challenge that whomever made the first mistake had to buy donuts for the rest of the ensemble. Since then I have brought that version to several clinics and warm up sessions. One time before I got to explain the title, a fellow trombone professor said, Oh, I get it! Don’t step in the holes!I only wish I had thought of that myself... Since we have one of the best donut shops in TN here in Cookeville, treating the studio to sugar coated goodies was always my intent.As with those initial exercises, you can vary these as much as you’d like.· Choose a tempo.· Choose a dynamic.· Choose an articulation/style.One way I like to play these is to have one person be the model, playing the entire scale over and over while everyone else plays the fragmented versions. That helps everyone to keep on track and stay in time. Double or triple up the parts for ensemble cohesion with a larger group.Practice one key, gradually speeding it up to improve fluidity, or choose a variation and take it through all keys, playing version A, B, C, or D then skipping to play the same set in a new key.If you want an additional challenge, play them in different octaves or change the key. Play the F Major set in f minor (all forms), different modes, etc. Players really have to be on their toes to remember if they are playing melodic minor in the ascending or descending form! For jazz players, try swinging them in dorian or mixolydian modes.The variations are endless!If you are using these with transposing instruments, 1) is F Major in Concert Pitch, 2) is Bb Major in Concert pitch, and so on. When you reach a scale that is enharmonic for another key (Db/C#, Gb/F#, or Cb/B), they are presented in both keys for each instrument so Trumpets can play in Eb while the Flutes are playing in C# with similar examples for all keys.All Donut Etudes with the same volume number are compatible so you can play them in mixed quartets or large ensembles with one or more instruments/people on part 1 and a different instrument on part 2, etc. Since the quartets are all identical, conductors/coaches can use any of the scores to tell which part should be playing at what time. Once you have played a scale with one set of parts, everyone can rotate to a different part and play the same scales again!Enjoy!

Cururu is one of the genres of Brazilian country music that inspired the creation of this song. This song tells the story of a country person who went to live in the metropolis and reflected that it was all illusion when she was confronted with the violence and ambition typical of the big city, making her miss the simple life in the countryside. The wood stove, the mud on the ground, riding in a cart, milking the cow, eating fruit from the tree, the freedom to walk without worry are memories that lead her to believe that God willing she will one day return to her origins. This instrumental version included three solos that can be replaced by improvisation. The main melody and counterpoints alternate between suits, with the use of voicings characteristic of the style. Without a doubt, it's an excellent opportunity to expand your band's repertoire with authentically Brazilian music.

The theme to Morning Sunrise is one of those ideas. When I wrote it down, I had no idea that I was ever going to create a piece from it, so I just wrote it down for strings.Several months later, however, I had decided that I wanted to write a piece to thank those who have made my high school music life great. I spent weeks developing 4 or 5 themes and even had half of a piece done at one point, but none of theme worked. I then remembered this one from and realized that it was the perfect theme.The result of taking so long to complete this piece is that it is a very powerful piece where there are no extraneous notes, and no missing ones either. Ascending Everest is an exciting new work for Concert Band that endeavors to create the varying moods that I imagine would accompany such an incredible undertaking as scaling the world's tallest mountain.The piece opens with a dramatic minor chord as the behemoth is viewed in person for the first time. It then quickly delves into the business at hand with a mixture of excitement and forboding. The middle section represents the first night's base camp, as weariness and doubt cause the climber great trepidation over what is yet to come. What if I can't do it? What if I fail? The tone begins a subtle change as renewed determination sets in, and the climax rings of victory!This work is for Concert Band, however the standard instrumentation is not strictly adhered to. In my experience, most high school or community bands don't have anyone to play bassoon and so I elected not create such a part. Also, you will note that there is no Percussion 2. In an attempt to understand the enigmatic style of Grainger's wind band music, I made a detailed analysis of his recurring orchestrational practices with regard to melody, countermelody, part writing and contrapuntal dynamics. The conclusion is that the Grainger sound is a function of recurring orchestrational techniques, rather than other compositional elements such as melody or harmony. This information was then used to dish up selected Grainger voice and piano pieces in his own idiosyncratic style. I also arranged “British Waterside” and “The Cutting of The Hay” (G. Schrimer). Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight is a reflective, moving piece based on a ballad about Lord Maxwell, who has killed a rival in a long-standing bloody family feud and is leaving for Scotland to avoid prosecution. He bids good-bye to his wife, his lands and his country. Lord Maxwell’s Goodnight appears as Grainger’s British Folk Music Setting No. 42 for high tenor voice or unison male chorus and 4 strings (violin, viola, 2 cellos) in 1904. The original is in the key of F major but has been shifted to Db major in this orchestration. The lyrics of the first verse are: Adieu, madame, my mother dear,But and my sisters three O!Adieu, fair Robert of Orchardstane,My heart is woe for thee, O!Adieu, the lily and the rose,The primrose fair to see, O!Adieu, my ladye, and only joy,For I may not stay with thee, O!.

Some of my favorite memories as a student in public school band include performing various arrangements of J.S. Bach. I loved sitting in the trumpet section listening across the ensemble to how the various melodic lines would rapidly fizz around from instrument to instrument.This short, two movement work is designed to foster this listening experience in your students. The first movement consists of a simple binary form, with woodwinds and brass trading off a slow melodic line. The ensemble then combines to allow for the exploration of top to bottom, back to front balance and blend without having to worry about too much technique. There are also moments of modernity in the harmonic structure designed to help anchor the movement to the present.The second movement is a fugue with a long melodic subject and two countersubjects, the point of which is to apply the listening lessons from the first movement to the more technical aspects of the second. Fugue subjects are announced with percussion entrances to focus the listening experience across the ensemble and the audience.

In the spirit of Scott Joplin, The Old Warsh Rag is a ragtime piece for concert band. It’s intricate enough to offer a bit of a challenge, yet very playable so that the band enjoys its efforts. There’s a counter melody that is played by itself and then superimposed on the main melody at the end. It’s written for high school concert band or community band; I chose the key so that, even when it gets a bit intricate, it should be easy enough for everyone to play. Published by Keith Terrett (A0.1149127). An arrangement for Concert/Wind Band of the classic Bond tune ''You Only Live Twice''. I made this chart back in the 1980's when I was studying orchestration & Arranging under the late and great Lt. Col. Trevor Sharpe. The soundtrack was the fourth of the series to be composed by John Barry. He tried to incorporate the elegance of the Oriental sound with Japanese music-inspired tracks. The theme song, You Only Live Twice, was composed by Barry and lyricist Leslie Bricusse, and sung by Nancy Sinatra after her father Frank Sinatra passed on the opportunity. Nancy Sinatra was reported to be very nervous while recording – first she wanted to leave the studio; then she claimed to sometimes sound like Minnie Mouse.[36] Barry declared that the final song uses 25 different takes. There are two versions of the song You Only Live Twice, sung by Nancy Sinatra, one directly from the movie soundtrack, and a second one for record release arranged by Billy Strange.[citation needed] The movie soundtrack song is widely recognised for its striking opening bars and oriental flavour, and was far more popular on radio. The record release reached No. 44 on the Billboard charts in the US, and No. 11 in the UK. Both versions of the title song are available on CD. A different title song was originally recorded by Julie Rogers, but eventually discarded. Only two lines from that version were kept in the final lyrics, and the orchestral part was changed to fit Sinatra's vocal range. Rogers' version only appeared in a James Bond 30th Anniversary CD, with no singer credit. In the 1990s, an alternative example of a possible theme song (also called You Only Live Twice and sung by Lorraine Chandler) was discovered in the vaults of RCA Records. It became a very popular track with followers of the Northern soul scene (Chandler was well known for her high-quality soul output on RCA) and can be found on several RCA soul compilations.

Nearer, My God, to Thee arranged for Young Concert Band, is a 19th-century Christian hymn by Sarah Flower Adams, based loosely on Genesis 28:11–19, the story of Jacob's dream. Genesis 28:11–12 can be translated as follows: So he came to a certain place and stayed there all night, because the sun had set. And he took one of the stones of that place and put it at his head, and he lay down in that place to sleep. Then he dreamed, and behold, a ladder was set up on the earth, and its top reached to heaven; and there the angels of God were ascending and descending on it…. The hymn is well known, among other uses, as the alleged last song the band on RMS Titanic played before the ship sank.
