Christmas Carols - Grade 3 - Total duration: approx. 8:10 minThe Silent Trilogy is a compilation of three traditional European Advent and Christmas carols arranged for various quintet ensembles (brass-, saxophone- and horn-quintet) and finally also for wind band. The trilogy consists of the songs Alle Jahre wieder, Es wird scho 'glei' dumpa and Stille Nacht. The colorful arrangements represent harmonic variations around the ever-present melody of the original songs.Alle Jahre wieder (Every year again, Audio-Demo from the beginning) is a well-known Christmas carol from the German-speaking area. The melody comes from Friedrich Silcher, the text was written by Wilhelm Hey in 1837.Es wird scho 'glei' dumpa (It will be dark soon, Audio-Demo from 2:15) is an Austrian nativity scene song based on the melody of a traditional Marian song. The text was written by Anton Reidinger in relation to a historical nativity play in Bad Ischl and published around 1884.Stille Nacht (Silent Night, Audio-Demo from 4:55) is one of the most famous Christmas carols. It was performed for the first time on December 24, 1818 with the melody by Franz Xaver Gruber and the text by Joseph Mohr in Salzburg. Since then, the song has been translated into countless languages and sung all over the world.The PDF contains the Score and all parts, already multiplied accordingly for a common number of musicians in a concert band. It was referenced by Charles Dickens in his 1843 novella “A Christmas Carol†but with the lyric:“God bless you, Merry Gentleman!May nothing you dismay!â€The phrase “God rest you merry†historically meant “may God grant you peace and happinessâ€. “Rest you merry†was used both in Shakespeare’s “As You Like It†and “Romeo and Julietâ€. Over time, there has been confusion over this title due to changes in common language usage. The word ‘merry’ is an adverb of rest and not an adjective of Gentlemen.“Pat-A-Pan†is a traditional Burgundian French Christmas carol written by Bernard de La Monnoye and published in 1720. The text calls for the bringing of a drum and flute to play for newborn Jesus Christ in worship. The title is onomatopoeic for the sound of a drum, as is the additional lyric “tu-re-lu-re-lu†for the sound of a flute.“Yigdal†is a Jewish hymn and prayer that is a poetic adaptation of Maimonides’ 13 principles of faith. The text is attributed to 14th century poet Daniel ben Judah. The melody dates to the 17th century or earlier. It is traditionally sung for morning prayer and as the conclusion of Shabbat evening services. Upon hearing Yigdal, English Methodist Thomas Olivers adapted this melody for use in his Christian hymn “The God of Abraham Praiseâ€, which is a paraphrase of the ben Judah doxology, and was first published in 1772.“Merry! Don’t You Know?†is a playful melding of these sacred songs, acting as a reminder that Christmas is a time to be merry and joyful as we celebrate the nature, power, and love of God.

The music is the Irish folk song, Slane referring to Slane Hill. Slane Hill is about ten miles from Tara in County Meath. It was on Slane Hill around 433 AD that St. Patrick defied a royal edict by lighting candles on Easter Eve. High King Logaire of Tara had decreed that no one could light a fire before Logaire began the pagan spring festival by lighting a fire on Tara Hill. Logaire was so impressed by Patrick’s devotion that, despite his defiance (or perhaps because of it), he let him continue his missionary work. It’s written for high school concert band or community band; I chose the key so that, even when it gets a bit intricate, it should be easy enough for everyone to play.
