Written around 1820 by Italian composer Saverio Raffaele Mercadante, this engraving of his CONCERTO FOR HORN is in the original key and has been meticulously edited. Consisting of two sections, the beautiful, plaintive opening slow section (Larghetto alla Siciliano) is about 2.5 minutes in length and works well as a stand-alone feature to showcase the sonority of the horn. It would be perfect for a talented high school player. The concluding fast section (Allegretto brillante) is bubbly, delightful, and quite technically challenging in a few spots. The concert band / wind ensemble accompaniment (available separately) is scored to prevent overpowering the soloist and will work with smaller groups for senior recitals, etc. NOTE: This download is for the 4-page SOLO PART ONLY. If you wish to purchase the band parts and full score, please visit www.bandroom.com. This SOLO PART will also work with the Kuyper setting for piano accompaniment. The score and parts are error-free, as I spent considerable time in editing and making corrections to the parts while it was prepared for performance. Georgia’s Horn – F or Eb Horn Solo with Concert Band: This piece was written for my niece, Georgia Cotter, who at the time was learning to play the French Horn at school. It is written in a comfortable range for the French Horn. Hopefully one day she will perform it.It consists of a repeating 3/4 theme mainly played by Solo Horn or Horn section, with various countermelodies which build up at each re-statement. This version is for concert band which includes parts for Piano and Glockenspiel. An orchestral version is also available at this site. It's an arrangement that your band will adore playing!Concert Band - GRADE 3. DURATION: 2’.05’Program notes:The low woodwinds have the spotlight in this lovely piece reminiscent of a jazz waltz. Layers of counterpoint bathe the piece in an ethereal wash of beautiful textures and colours which soar above the melody line.Rehearsal notes:This study in counterpoint needs clear layers with beautifully balanced and blended dynamics and tone. The piece should build up gradually with crescendos and decrescendos carefully observed so that the band swells and fades as a whole, particularly at rehearsal figure B. The chromatic phrases at rehearsal figures B and D need to be smooth and in time, not at all hurried. The melody is a feature for the lower instruments, including tuba, and is an opportunity for these instruments to explore increased ranges and to work on a full well- rounded, lyrical tone.About the composer:Neille Williams is a multi-instrumentalist, singer and composer based in Canberra, Australia. After graduating from the Sydney Conservatorium of Music, Neille worked as an in-demand musician, composer and conductor on the Sydney music scene before taking her talents abroad. Sometimes we see patterns as events unfold in our lives. Departures was written following and during a time when I witnessed a number of people leaving-moving away, taking a different path in life, or leaving this life altogether. A single, sighing motive unites all three sections of this piece. It is heard right away in the flutes, takes a yearning tone in the middle section, and returns wistfully at the end of the piece. As with every departure in life, one is left wondering what the arrival will be like. The first and last sections of the piece are in a moderate to slow 6/8 while the middle is in 4/4. There are brief solos for horn, alto sax, and oboe (cued in clarinet). The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. This piece was originally written for an ensemble of 18 students to give them something that would engage and/or challenge each player. I wanted to expose them to shifting meters and relied on a minimalist idea for building the groove that drives the piece. It is important to maintain a feeling of motion throughout. The percussion section will be kept busy moving between instruments, and they are featured in the middle-it should sound like magic sparkles. I added traditional instrumentation to this, and there is some writing more difficult than grade 3 (particularly in the oboe part since originally there was no flute). Still, I think it is a fun piece for the right group. The meter is mostly 5/8 with the occasional 6/8 or 4/8 thrown in. The recording available here is a real band with some real mistakes that hopefully don't get in the way too much. The download includes the full score and set of parts. Canadian pop group The Original Caste first recorded it in 1969 for both the TA label and its parent Bell label. A 1971 cover was a hit in the U.S. for Jinx Dawson, lead vocalist of Coven, whose recording was featured in the film Billy Jack. The single went to number 26 on the Billboard pop chart.
