This work of about 7-9 minutes in length from the Romantic period is lyrically very expressive, featuring large dynamic contrasts and extended range. Benjamin Coy’s fine arrangement for solo Trombone and Concert Band or Wind ensemble is appropriate for moderately advanced performers.

Henry Mancini wrote this unusual ‘jazz bassoon concerto’ in 1980 for Hollywood session musician Ray Pizzi (the so-called ‘godfather’ of modern jazz bassoon); he can be heard on the original ‘Star Wars’ (1977) soundtrack, also on ‘Predator 2’ (as the voice of the beast). This whirlwind piece takes us through the whole range of the instrument, starting with skittish jumping octaves, a free improvisation (book-ended by ‘shouts’ from the band), a very sultry slow section (featuring Mancini’s trademark chromatic harmony) a magnificent and dramatic final chorus, closing with an extended cadenza to further show off the instrument in this unusual disguise. This arrangement calls for a small beat quartet of keys, Fender bass and drums to accompany the solo bassoon; a suggested solo has been provided for the first section, but the final cadenza has been left blank for complete artistic creation. This is especially true for solo concertos or other solo works with orchestra, band, or wind ensemble. The present arrangement adds a significant piece by a great Romantic composer to the bass clarinet repertoire.Originally for solo cello with orchestra, Élégie fits perfectly into the extended range of the modern bass clarinet (just two low Ds are called for). The solo part is challenging, while the accompaniment parts are easily accessible. The arrangement calls for 2 flutes, 2 oboes, 4 clarinets, 2 bassoons, 4 horns, and 1 string bass (or alternatively, contrabassoon), in addition to the soloist.Enjoy the mp3 of a live performance of this arrangement. JalousieJalousie is a tango composed by Danish composer Jacob Gade in 1925.  There are two main themes in the composition.  The first is “a temperamental theme†in D minor followed by a lyrical section in D major.  Gade’s composition has two sources of inspiration.  The first was by a violent thunderstorm that surprised him one day while he was out on a walk.  The other source of inspiration came from a jealousy murder, which was much talked about in those days, and was reported in the newspapers.  The first performance was set for September 14, 1925, and Gade himself played the opening violin cadenza of the tango. The Storms of Time was commissioned by a high school band in Ohio as a memorial to a band member who died in a traffic accident. Although the piece is built on motivic development and has no specific program, the solo alto sax represents the dedicatee, who played that instrument, and the other soloists represent her friends, who express their sense of first loss, then resignation and acceptance after her voice suddenly falls silent near the end.The piece is in ternary form: slow-fast-slow. Slow sections are lyrical and thinly scored, fast section very rhythmic with much mixed irregular meter. Several exposed solos for flute, clarinet, bassoon, and especially alto sax, plus short ones for oboe and trumpet.The price includes license to make as many copies of each part as necessary.Grade 4+ - Duration 6:45

But he already had a mature mastery of orchestral writing, along with the courage to defy convention: A march takes the place of the normal triple-meter scherzo movement. It's an unconventional march that starts with an elegant melody, surveys a wide range of emotions, and dissipates into a quiet ending. It's really neither a march nor a scherzo, but something all its own.This colorful concert band arrangement was written for an adult community band. It's appropriate for a college or community band, or an adventurous high school wind ensemble. It features two solo flutes, two solo clarinets, soprano saxophone, vibraphone, and marimba (the vibraphone part is cued to allow performance without the marimba). It also requires strong oboe and bassoon players. Extensive cues allow rehearsal and performance without oboes, bassoons, soprano saxophone, and/or mallet percussion.  Duration: approx. 5:00. The 5 bar phrase Orchestra version begins with Bassoon and Viola playing a haunting melody that is joined by Tuba and Double Bass for 5 bars then Alto Sax and Viola join followed by Bass Clarinet and Trombone and eventually builds to include 26 Wind, String and Brass instruments as they make their individual entrances symbolizing many evening stars. As each new star appears every 5th bar until the eyes of the skies drench the night with light.  Wrapping up the Fugue is a 4 Octave trumpet solo line that explodes onto the scene and pulls you uncontrollably into the Bolero. This wonderfully melodic dance is rich in authentic character and attitude augmented by the entire orchestra with lines and elements that support the simple, yearning, lifting lines for the soloist. El Festiva is the reward for being a great listener! This tropical up-tempo 3rd movement lives up to its title. Rhythms and lines that push and pull your creative ear to a fun, party place… a Festival!

With frequent changes between major and minor, the stirring march themes reappear as romantic melodies. Of special interest are the trumpet and piano solos, and a section for oboe, clarinet, horn, bassoon and piano, in homage to Mozart and Beethoven, who wrote beautiful quintets for this combination of instruments. Not all parts are necessary. They were included so as not to leave out members of a band I was playing in. For example, the alto clarinet part duplicates the third B flat clarinet part. There are tenor sax cues in the alto sax part for the solo in measures 46 and 47 in case a tenor sax is not available. A PIANO IS REQUIRED. I don't have a good band sound clip but you can listen to the piece arranged for wind quintet and piano. It is the 1st movement of my Sextet for Winds and Piano. This audio is attached to that piece here or on my music website, www.garyfriedmanmusic.net. Duration 5 minutes. Year 2000.

It contains the parts for Piccolo, Flute, Oboe, B flat Clarinet, Alto Saxophone, B flat Trumpet, Tenor Saxophone, French Horn in F, Bass Clarinet, Baritone Saxophone, Bassoon, Euphonium, Trombone, Bass Drum and Snare Drum. The piece uses the whole ranges of these instruments, from the A1 that can be played by the Bassoon and Trombone, to the C8 that is required from the Piccolo. Many of these instruments need to use techniques to utilise their full range, so make sure your instrumentalists are skilled and knowledgeable.The song has a lot of rhythmic and melodic diversity, and switches tempo and key signature frequently. The keys used are C major, F major, G major and E minor, not too difficult. Some of the rhythms can be quite hard to grasp, and instrumentalists must be able to play quick notes with accuracy. Again, make sure your instrumentalists are well learned for this. The song has a set of melodies, that are divided up by three bar percussion solos. Many of the instruments play solos or solis throughout the song, which it can be good for developing an instrumentalist's ability to stay calm on stage. The song should also improve their ability to play some complex rhythms at quite a fast speed.
