Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1497124). The operetta Die Landstreicher (The Tramps) successfully premiered in 1899 in Vienna. The march Zauber der Montur (Magic of the Uniform) was not part of the operetts in exactly that form as it appeared as single issue. The composer formed it out of a duet and a further melody of his operetta. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2019 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter.In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music. Whether we are journeying to the mountains or driving to work, mother nature is always on display. Therefore, I believe mother nature symbolizes pleasure, pain, and despair. Having the opportunity to grow up in New England and now living in Maine, I have seen a WIDE variety of weather within just a period of 24 hours! While living on the West Coast I will never forget my drive on the 395 going north and seeing the Sierra Nevada mountains (to my left) tall and grand with snow covered mountain tops! To the right, you would see and feel the hot desert! Although the performers do not need to envision mountaintops or deserts you need to respect the different sections and moods of the piece and know that everything is changing around us, all the time. As musical artists, we can convey our life journeys through our individual sound as well as the ensemble; whether it’s through enjoying nature, life’s challenges, and celebrations! Enjoy making traditional sounds and nontraditional sounds with your instrument.

From this position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they paved the way towards modern day democracy. Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality of the themes as Solon’s reforms take hold and social and economic stability is once again established. This piece was written to commemorate the opening of the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High School Band in Solon, IA.

Requiem for the PequodCaptain Ahab’s story of obsession, and ultimate failure at the hands of Moby Dick is, of course, a well-worn cautionary tale. The tale of the Pequod, the ship that also met its demise as a result of Ahab’s actions is, in my eyes, worth examining. Requiem for the Pequod begins with Two Bells, tolled to mark the end of the day before Ahab and his crew set sail. The minor theme, played by a solo flute, sets the mood as restful, but somewhat ominous at the same time; treatments by the brass in chorale style and then the full ensemble follow. The next three sections beginning at letter A feature up-tempo variations on the main theme (Setting Sail) followed by a lively Sailor’s Shanty at letter D, both depicting carefree life at sea. A return to a melancholy minor theme at letter E portrays the tedium of Months at Sea as the Pequod and her crew travel toward their destination, unaware of the fate that awaits them. The penultimate section beginning at letter F (Fait Awaits) depicts the culminating battle, from the stirring of Moby Dick beneath the waves to the sinking of the Pequod and the death of Ahab and the crew, save Ishmael, who recounts the tragic tale in the final section Epilogue.Â

This bombastic Concerto by Nikolai Rimsky-Korsakov was composed in 1877 whilst still a serving naval officer, for fellow marine musician; it was premiered in March 1878 at Kronstadt, with the international premiere not taking place until the summer of 1952 in New York City. The work consists of three short movements, the second and third including cadenza sections for the soloist. The duration of the Concerto stands at around 10 minutes. Although written for the tenor trombone, the Concerto is standard repertoire amongst bass trombonists, as the composer makes few demands on the very high register of the instrument. Indeed, in common with solo trombone works of the period, the Concerto encompasses the full downward range of the instrument, including in the 3rd movement cadenza notes that are so low as to be usually unobtainable (and therefore played up an octave) by latter-day tenor trombonists. This arrangement has been rescored from the condensed piano arrangement for modern day concert band.

The construction of the sail consisted of a box the size of a loaf of bread (known as a CubeSat), metal booms, and four incredibly thin triangular Mylar sails. The vehicle was propelled by light from the Sun and in future projects; the sail would continue to gain momentum, ultimately accelerating to high speeds, allowing for travel along limitless distances. ​ Luminous Travels - The Journey of LightSail-A tells the account of this space-faring vessel in four major musical scenes. The first scene, UNFOLDING, features a lyrical melody first heard on the solo trombone then carried off by of the ensemble. The second scene, COMPUTING, depicts the inner-workings of the CubeSat. This new theme is rhythmic and aggressive, suggesting the hazards to come. The third scene, BLACKOUT, represents the communication blackouts that occurred during the flight that left the project in peril. This scene marks the cadenza of the work and depicts the lonely and frigid environment of space. Eventually, the unease is assuaged bringing hope back to the project. With a new sense of optimism, the final scene, ACCELERATING, represents the increase in speed that will occur in future solar sail space projects. The music from the earlier sections returns and changes, and as the music presses forward; the solo trombone rises into its highest register at breakneck speed as the solar sail crosses along infinite space. ​ The piece is dedicated to Keith Hunter, who has been a champion of my music and for whom Luminous Travels is dedicated. ​.

Also known as the third movement FINALE, the work was later revised in 2011. Like many of my compositions, it was not intentionally written to a specific form. My first symphony as a whole was loosely based on my dissatisfaction with the modern world's obsession with consumerism and the distractions of technology. A difficult idea to depict through music, the third movement was about breaking free from the norm and finding clarity through the simple joys in life. Level: grade 4.5Duration: About 7 minutes

Published by Indie Classical Publications (A0.971806). OVERCAST was originally written as part of a three-movement work for solo trombone and piano. When I was composing the original work, I wanted to create an additional arrangement of the 3rd movement (DRIZZLE) for concert band. The work is inspired by the brief period of my life when I lived abroad in England. As many people are aware, it rains constantly in Great Britain, thus making it an easy inspiration for music. Even though I consider this work somewhat melancholic, it is meant to also reflect the warmth and comfort I felt while living in the country where I met so many wonderful people. Other inspiration for this movement came from Ralph Vaughan William's Pastoral Symphony, most notably, the 4th movement. Grade 4. Duration: 5:50
