Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1285185 Composed by Christian F. J. Buettner, John Tuananh Dang, and Rajan S. Arranged by Stephen Cai. 21st Century,Video Game. Score and Parts. 66 pages. Stephen Cai #876297. Published by Stephen Cai (A0.1285185). Monody - TheFatRat (Christian F. J. Buettner) arr. Stephen Cai for Concert BandProgram Notes:MUSIC As a sequel to Pigstep by Lena Raine and Exodus by Ernest Gold, I have decided to take on the challenge of arranging the ever-famous glitch hop song, Monody by Christian Buettner (known more prominently by his online alias, TheFatRat).Similarly to Pigstep, my first arrangement, I ran into the challenge of instrumentation, as Monody’s original soundtrack almost entirely consisted of electronic instruments. However, I used the same technique I did with Pigstep to overcome this problem: assign basslines to low brass, treble melodies to mid-range instruments, and high parts to upper woodwinds. Unlike Pigstep, Monody pushed me to be more creative with the percussion section, as I had to puzzle out recreating all of the numerous sound effects throughout the piece with traditional percussion instruments. I even decided to notate a conch shell line for the war horn present at the beginning and the coda! At the end, however, it all came together nicely, and I came to realize that both this song and the process of arranging it represent a journey, albeit in different contexts. The word “Monody†refers to, in a literal sense, a song sung to mourn one’s death, which accordingly fits with my view of the piece as a journey where the narrator loses their companion. Writing the introduction measures (M.22) carried me through the genuine feelings of embarking on a mythical undertaking as the original soundtrack intends to portray. The lively middle section (M.70) was enjoyable to write as well, because the music itself is upbeat and full of energy. Finally, arranging the solo section was probably my most memorable experience. The slow and subtly melancholic character of the melody (the oboe solo) very closely alludes to the narrator’s mourning, and the enchanting lyrics originally written for this section further confirms their loss:    I still hear you in the breeze,    See your shadows in the trees;    Holding on, memories never change. The chords and harmonies that the original soundtrack provided were relatively simple to transcribe, and I found joy complementing them with luscious percussion effects. This is my interpretation of Monody, and I believe that it would be best performed as a journey, one which we can relate to as it encompasses the theme of loss; a monody. ARTWORK I also took up the challenge of creating original cover artwork for Monody, and I have to say, my level of appreciation for artists of any kind has skyrocketed ever since that endeavor. It took nearly two months of watching YouTube tutorials, onerous idea crunching, and using my sister’s drawing tablet, but I had nevertheless completed it with advice from some of my more experience peers (including my sister). Formal Credits: Cai, Stephen and Rachel Cai. “Monody†Arrangement for Concert Band cover. 2023 Lastly, I want to say thanks to my friend Matteo Sohn for being such a huge musical inspiration, and thank you for acknowledging my arrangement!

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1272805 Composed by Drew Morris. 21st Century,Classical,Contemporary,Contest,Festival. Score and Parts. 107 pages. Yellow Envelope Publications #865003. Published by Yellow Envelope Publications (A0.1272805). Threshold is meant to portray time slowing down as you approach a black hole due to Gravitational Time Dilation. As such, I took a melody and reworked it in several different time signatures, to allow you to feel it stretch out or shrink, leading to moments where time basically goes out the window with prolonged moments of aleatoric metallic cacophony in the percussion section. Mixed in with the increasing and decreasing time signatures is something loosely resembling a fugue subject in the woodwinds. I’m not sure where it came from, but I love the feeling it gave this piece.By the way, I always thought it would be really cool if, during the end of the piece, the percussion could be spread throughout the performance venue to create a true surround sound experience, playing the aleatoric motive all around the audience. (Maybe even let some of the audience members participate too!)  …just a thought.Instrumentation2 Flute, Oboe, Bassoon, 2 Clarinet, Bass Clarinet,2 Alto Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone, Baritone Saxophone, 2 Trumpet, French Horn, 2 Trombone, Euphonium, Treble Clef Euphonium, Tuba6 Percussionists - Timpani, Snare Drum, Bass Drum, Floor Tom,2 Suspended Cymbal, Shaker (egg or shekere), Crash Cymbals, Tam-tam,Glockenspiel, and as many pitched metallic instruments as possible (G, A-flat, B-Flat)

Rockin’ Rondo was originally a guitar and drum recital piece, but it’s great for a concert band. It’s a meaty piece; its form is ABACABA with Coda. Suitable for high school, community or college band, it has enough challenge to keep it interesting and lots of changes to give it wide appeal. Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.891956 Composed by A.E.Williams. Arranged by Stephen Davies. 20th Century,Standards. Score and Parts. 74 pages. Stephen Davies #6094485. Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.503413 Composed by Christian Petzold. Arranged by John R. Daniels. Classical,Pop,Rock. Score and parts. 37 pages. John R. Daniels #115545. Published by John R. Daniels (A0.503413). Although often attributed to J. S. Bach, the Minuet in G major was actually written by Christian Petzold. This arrangement pays homage to the flavor of the original by using a traditional chamber wind quintet for the opening measures. Then it morphs into a lively pop version that employs alternate chords and modal settings, counter motion and counter-melodic elements, prepared fifths instead of the modern suspension, and an uplifting key change. PLEASE NOTE - THE COVER PAGES AND CONDUCTOR'S SCORE ARE 8.5 X 14 INSTEAD OF 8.5 X 11.IF YOU WOULD LIKE YOUR ENSEMBLE TO GAIN MORE MEDIA EXPOSURE, please record your performance of this piece and email it to CustomMusic@Salt-Cellar-Creations.com. Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1385649 Composed by John Ireland. Arranged by John Ivor Holland. 20th Century,Christian,Classical,Religious. 82 pages. John Ivor Holland #969580. Published by John Ivor Holland (A0.1385649). John Ireland studied piano with Frederick Cliffe and composition with Charles Villers Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, where he himself taught between 1923 and 1939, his pupils including Benjamin Britten. He worked as organist and choirmaster at St Luke's Chelsea between 1904 and 1926, while developing his career as a composer. Ireland retired in 1953, settling in the hamlet of Rock in Sussex, where he lived in a converted windmill for the rest of his life. It was there he met the young pianist Alan Rowlands who would be Ireland's choice to record his complete piano music. He died of heart failure aged 82 at Rock Mill in Washington, Sussex, and is buried at St. Mary the Virgin in Shipley, near his home. His epitaph reads Many waters cannot quench love and One of God's noblest works lies here. His organ music belongs largely to the early years of his composing career (1902-1911), however, the 'Meditation' on John Keble's Rogationtide Hymn was written in 1958, and was his very last composition. Arranged for concert band, including parts for string bass and contrabass woodwind, as well as attractive moments for Cor Anglais.

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.1239681 Composed by David M. Stewart. March. 15 pages. DMStewart Music #835072. Published by DMStewart Music (A0.1239681). This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Floridaon the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferrybarges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fishto provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to beso in the future. The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, thisrepresents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is alinear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you canpicture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. Thesecond strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Triorepresents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have feltknowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts thatwere put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and manysuccesses, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is thecelebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building acity. I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

This piece, The Palatka Port March, is intended to depict a little of the sense of life in the early years of Florida on the St. John’s River. It was once a target for ships venturing out to find the New World. It has been used to ferry barges and livestock. Some simply used it for sailing and transportation throughout the years, and some to catch fish to provide for themselves. The life on this river has been diverse, yet fulfilling over the years and will continue to be so in the future.   The melodies in this piece were taken from the shape of the St. Johns River from its upper point in Jacksonville, to where our part of the story ends in Palatka. Notice the falling and rising 8th note runs at the beginning, this represents the rise and the fall of the river as it enters Jacksonville from the Atlantic Ocean. The first strain is a linear, yet very regal melody where the heavy beats follow the contour of the river as it runs south. Here you can picture the ships coming from Europe across the ocean and the excitement they felt when they reached it. The second strain is more playful and represents the life that the river has provided for people for centuries. The Trio represents the calmness and civility when Palatka was discovered, and the happiness the settlers must have felt knowing they had found their perfect place to call home. The break strain represents the hard work and efforts that were put forth to secure the land and build a community. There would have been many triumphs and many successes, but the journey would have not been easy. The final strain is the culmination of the piece. This is the celebration and the feeling of personal nobility that all of the settlers felt after taking a river and dirt and building a city. I hope you enjoy, The Palatka Port March!

Concert Band - Level 4 - SKU: A0.942434 Arranged by Brock Lupton. Romantic Period. Score and parts. 84 pages. Brock Lupton #6879051. Published by Brock Lupton (A0.942434). Brahms composed the Alto Rhapsody, properly known as Rhapsody for Alto, Male Chorus, and Orchestra, opus 53 in 1869. It was first performed in Jena on March 3, 1870. The text is based on Harzreise im Winter (Winter Journey in the Harz Mountains), a poem by well-known German poet Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The Alto Rhapsody, like many of Brahms’ works, has loneliness and alienation as its central themes. Brahms’ devotion to Clara Schumann, Robert Schumann’s widow, is well-known (the letters between her and Brahms fill two volumes). What is less well-known is that he was undoubtedly very fond of Julie Schumann, Clara’s daughter. In 1869, Brahms spent the summer near the Schumann’s residence and was in daily contact with Julie and Clara completing, among other works, the Liebeslieder (Love Song) Waltzes. In early July, Julie announced her engagement. Of course, I told Johannes first of all, Clara noted in her diary on the 11th. Soon after, the conductor Hermann Levi told her that Brahms had been devotedly attached to her daughter. By July 16th, Clara noted in her diary that Brahms speaks only in monosyllables . . . [and] treats Julie in the same manner, although he used to be so especially nice to her. Did he love her? Julie was married on September 22. Later on that very wedding day, Brahms called on Clara, who wrote in her diary, Johannes brought me a very wonderful piece . . . the words from Goethe’s Harzreise. . . He called it his bridal song. This piece seems to me neither more nor less than the expression of his own heart’s anguish. If only he would for once speak so tenderly! This piece is of course the dark and emotional Alto Rhapsody. Goethe’s poem Harzreise im Winter poetically describes the kind of life God intends for different temperaments. The three stanzas set by Brahms concern the fate of a man in fruitless struggle against the bonds of misery. A young man, turned misanthropic by sorrow, seeks solitude in the wilderness. The piece is in the baroque cantata style, with an opening recitative, and aria, and a concluding chorale. The alto describes the desolate winter landscape and in the final chorale joins the male chorus in a prayer for a melody that can bring comfort to the thirsting soul (indeed the plea restore his heart is repeated three times at the end, as a kind of Amen). In the Alto Rhapsody it is not hard to find evidence for Brahms’ statement that I speak through my music. The foregoing is from a program note written for a 1997 New York Choral Society performance of the Alto Rhapsody in observance of the centenary of the death of Johannes Brahms. It has been taken from the society web page http://www.nychoral.org/brahms/brahms3.htmlAn English translation of the German text used by Brahms SOLOBut down there, who is it?His path loses itself in the bush. Behind him the branches close. The grass stands up again. Desolation surrounds him. O, who heals the wounds of the one to whom balm has become poison, who drank hatred of people from the fullness of love? Once despised, now a despiser. Secretly he destroys himself in unsatisfying self-seeking. CHORUS If there is in your psaltery, Father of Love, a tone his ear can hear, let it enliven his heart. .

A particularly musical (unlike a lot of more recent contest pieces), yet subtly testing piece for most sections of the band. I have included a page (page 35) with useful printing instructions.I hope I have done it justice as it is my personal favourite contest piece. And, if you would like parts for other instruments, please contact me via my email address: clive.longhurst57@gmail.com.Please do leave comments - good or bad - I will be most grateful.

When I was four years old my family lived in Oregon and our family would go camping with several other families at Shasta Lake in California. Some of the most vivid memories I have from those trips involve riding in our boat (we named it Whoops Wow). I remember riding on the bow of the boat and finding that to be a thrilling and slightly terrifying experience at the time. I gave myself the task of telling the story of this experience through music for concert band. I sincerely hope you enjoy reliving this experience with me. Shane Vickery.
