Published by Edition Schwalbe (A0.1021849). Julius FuÄÃk (1872 - 1916) was a famous Austrian-Hungarian military bandmaster, who composed more than 400 pieces during his short lifetime. First of all he was known as a king of marches: His Florentiner March and Entry of the Gladiators had worldwide success, but also some of his overtures and waltzes became very popular. His concert march Under the Admiral's Flag was composed in 1911and had its first performance, when the Austrian-Hungarian battleship Viribus unitis premiered its launching in the former Austrian military habour of Pula in Istria. This arrangement keeps the key of the symphony orchestra version, while most band arrangements transpose a whole tone lower. This transcription was commissioned by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg and first performed conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their 2014 New Year's Concert on January 6th in Salzburg, Austria. A Ilha (The Island) is a tone poem `commissioned and dedicated to the Banda Musical de Fornos (Musical Band of Fornos) for the celebration of his 100.º anniversary. Fornos is a locality of Santa Maria da Feira, Portugal, nearby the confluence between the rivers Douro and Paiva. On the river exists an island called Ilha do Castelo (Castle Island) or Ilha dos Amores Love Island. The piece is a portray of this island, starting from the two names, being built in two part: - First Castle is in a modal language and with irregular rhythms that remits for a medieval sonority; - Second Love has a written tonal and romantic, with a melodic subject that explores the expressiveness in the execution. .

Halifax was devastated on 6 December 1917 when two ships collided in the city's harbour, one of them a munitions ship loaded with explosives bound for the battlefields of the First World War. What followed was one of the largest human-made explosions prior to the detonation of the first atomic bombs in 1945.(...)In early December, one of the merchant ships in port was the large, Norwegian vessel Imo, en route from Halifax to New York to pick up relief supplies (...) Another was the French munitions ship Mont-Blanc - filled with tons of benzol, the high explosive picric acid, TNT and gun cotton - arriving in Halifax to join a convoy across the ocean.(...)The Imo was departing the harbour on the morning of 6 December 1917 (...) Imo had an experienced, local harbour pilot on board, William Hayes, who knew the navigation rules of the harbour. However, earlier encounters that morning with two inbound vessels moving towards Bedford Basin - both of which Imo had passed starboard-to-starboard - resulted in the unusual position that Imo now occupied, too far to the east (...) The Mont-Blanc had arrived outside Halifax the previous day and anchored overnight at the mouth of the harbour. On the morning of 6 December, the ship was cleared by harbour authorities to proceed toward Bedford Basin. Despite the Mont-Blanc's dangerous cargo, there was no special protocol for the passage of munitions ships in the harbour. Other ships such as the Imo were not ordered to hold their positions that morning until the Mont-Blanc had made safe passage through the port. Francis Mackey, Mont-Blanc's pilot, was guiding the ship inbound on the Dartmouth-side of the Narrows, when he encountered the Imo heading straight towards him in what he believed was Mont-Blanc's lane. Mackey would later maintain that the Imo was moving at an unsafe speed for such a large, unwieldly ship in the harbour, and also that incoming ships (in this case Mont-Blanc) had the right-of-way over outgoing vessels. Regardless of the accuracy of those claims, what is certain is that the Imo was sailing too far to the east, in what should have been Mont-Blanc's path.After a series of whistles and miscommunications between the officers and pilots on the two ships, and failed manoeuvres to avoid a collision, the Imo struck the starboard bow of the Mont-Blanc. After a few moments the two ships parted, leaving a gash in Mont-Blanc's hull and generating sparks that ignited volatile grains of dry picric acid, stored below its decks. (...) The Mont-Blanc exploded at 9:04:35 a.m., sending out a shock wave in all directions, followed by a tsunami that washed violently over the Halifax and Dartmouth shores. More than 2.5 square km of Richmond were totally levelled, either by the blast, the tsunami, or the structure fires caused when buildings collapsed inward on lanterns, stoves and furnaces.Homes, offices, churches, factories, vessels (including the Mont-Blanc), the railway station and freight yards - and hundreds of people in the immediate area - were obliterated. In the first half of the twentieth century, her desire to be both serious composer and mother was atypical, and she faced significant challenges – public and private – in blending these roles. Against the backdrop of an unhappy and unsupportive marriage and a society not yet ready to accept her creative ambitions and strong views on Australia’s musical development, she remained admirably steadfast in pursuing her goals. Sutherland created over two hundred compositions, ceaselessly campaigned on behalf of Australian music and musicians, and led the initial push to construct what is now Arts Centre Melbourne. In her attempts to redefine beauty in music she used idiosyncratic musical language, being at the mercy of ‘sound pictures’ and ‘floating ideas’. Not much is known about this particular piece, 'Bush Ballad', save that its opening folk-like melody and sinewy variations on it are rather wonderful and very indicative of Sutherland's style - certain portions of the score seemed to be missing, and there were several handwritten corrections, so a certain amount of reconstruction and editing has been necessary to present this arrangement for full band.

This piece tells the ficticious story of an inept, incompitant, yet quite pompous prefect conquistador and his poor attempt to colonize an indigenous village. The natives keep out smarting him, and sabotaging his plans. Things get so out of hand, that he can't even keep his own people in line. This makes the Prefect irate and ill-tempered, more so to his own company, than to the natives! What am I to tell the queen?!. I can't have my name soiled like this!. Upon hearing that the Prefect's superior officer, the Legate of Iberia, will be coming to check up on his progress, he comes up with a plan. He'll make a deal with the natives to make it look like he's been kidnapped and murdered. Dressed as conquistadors, the natives won't say a word and the Prefect's second in command will say that he's been killed. To the Prefect's surprise, this actually worked and the Legate was fooled. Upon the Legate returning back to Iberia, the now defunct Prefect conquistador has made arrangements with the natives in exchange for food and supplies to fool the Legate each time he visits.This rousing march is a great opener or closer for any concert. Perfect for high school, college, or municiple/adult continuing level community band! The music here perfectly encapsulates this swashbuckling, yet haphazardous story!

Louis Adolphe Mayeur (1837 - 1894), was a Belgium clarinetist, saxophonist, composer and conductor who spent most of his musical career in France; Entering the French Military in 1855, he was a clarinetist in the Second Régiment of the Cuirassiers (Mounted Calvary) of the Garde Impériale. A student of Klosé at the Paris Conservatory, he received his First Prize in Clarinet in 1860. One of the inner circle of Adolphe Sax (along with fellow Belgiums Jules Demersseman and Jean-Baptiste Singelée, whose “Quartet for Saxophones“ was premièred with Mayeur playing and Demersseman conducting), Mayeur took up the saxophone and was quickly engaged as the saxophone soloist in the Opera House of Brussels, La Monnaie (the Mint). Sax commissioned a number of works from Mayeur for the saxophone, which were published by his company and used in his class at the Paris Conservatory.By 1871, Mayeur was also named Saxophone Solo with the Paris Opera, performing in opears and ballets by Halévy, Meyerbeer, Thomas, Saint-Saens, Massenet, Délibes and Paladlihe. It would appear that sometime during this period, his relations with Sax became difficult, culminating in his publications of works by Buffet-Crampon, one of Sax’s rival companies and one of the main protagonists in the series of lawsuits which led to Sax’s bankrupcy. Mayeur’s own declining health lead to his death in 1894.The Grande Fantaisie de Concert sur Rigoletto dates from 1877. The contrasting sections use motifs from arias and duets from Verdi’s opera. Florid cadenzas seperate the various sections, but those passages should be played in the manner of “bel canto†ornamentation, always lyrical and songlike. This is the score and solo part only for the concert band version. From this position of power earned on the battlefield, Solon was able to institute reforms and a new manner of governance. At a time when a high percentage of the people were steeped in indentured servitude due to crushing debt owed to a small percentage of aristocrats, his reforms were in no way popular, however they paved the way towards modern day democracy. Solon: Lawgiver of Athens depicts Athens during this time as Solon comes to power. You will hear the great city-state of Athens, the senate in turmoil, Solon shouting down the din, speaking calmly and with measured reason, and eventually you will hear a move towards a major tonality of the themes as Solon’s reforms take hold and social and economic stability is once again established. This piece was written to commemorate the opening of the Solon Center for the Arts in 2017 and was first performed by Solon High School Band in Solon, IA.
