Ohne Sorgen (Without Cares), a Polka schnell (Quick Polka) by Josef Strauss, younger brother of the famous king of waltz Johann jr., was composed in 1869,while passing the summer with the Strauss orchestra in Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg, Russia. It was premiered there on 10 September 1869. As a special feature of this piece, laughing by the musicians is demanded at certain points in the Trio. This is more difficult to execute with a wind band, as wind players can't laugh and play simultaneously like string players. The arrangement is kept in the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra. Is was first time performed by Mozarteum Wind Philharmonic Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2015 in the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria, repeated on 6 January 2023 by Salzburg Wind Philharmonic and broadcasted both times live by Austrian television. It premiered on 2 October 1864 in Pavlovsk near St. Petersburg and was dedicated to the famous Viennese music critic Eduard Hanslick. This arrangement in the original key of the orchestral version was commissioned by Salzburg Wind Philharmonic, principal conductor Hansjoerg Angerer and premiered at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2020 at the Grosses Festspielhaus (Large Festival Hall) in Salzburg, Austria and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Albert Schwarzmann had to step in at very short notice for the sick Hansjoerg Angerer, who performed this piece at the same event on 6 January 2024. Its relatively flat topography and high elevation lead to intense winds and unpredictable storms bestowing the plateau's colorful moniker. Contrary to the title, the music reflects a compilation of impressions from multiple visits over a decade’s time, gathered with my son’s first-hand reports of overnight stays, rather than a single day’s experience. My original objective for the music was to portray the stark and stony landscape alternatively caressed and buffeted in a stew of breezes and gales, sunshine and storms. However, as I was writing the piece it became apparent the true theme of the music is rather a daily high-altitude drama pitting light versus darkness, a drama staged on the plateau’s rocks, meadows, streams, and lakes depicting a perpetually shifting kaleidoscope of distinctive lighting unlike any I have experienced elsewhere. The transparent, thin air reveals indigo blue skies and scalding-white clouds overarching stunning vistas stretching a hundred miles or more. The landscape glitters under the radiance of high latitude sunlight. The only word I can think of to describe the golden glow of sunbeams slicing through a summer snow squall is ethereal. The utter absence of artificial light makes for the darkest night skies and brightest stars one can experience on earth.

The original song embodies beauty as a whole, but the lyrics use that embodiment to describe the beauty of a partner the singer is falling in love with. The verse section of the song is soft but eventually thrusts the listener into a powerful chorus section. The song creates this warm summer like feeling, hence its use of major and minor 7th chords, which is very fitting for its time of release (July 15, 2022). To add to the warmth of the song, JVKE changes the pitch of the song to A=432 hertz tuning, instead of the conventional A=440 hertz tuning. Many people believe that A=432 hertz tuning decreases the listener’s heart rate and sounds more peaceful, which which perfectly fits the mood of the song. With these lyrics and musical techniques combined, GOLDEN HOUR gives the listener an amazing and moving experience, and is why it is one of the most viral songs on the internet.  This song was chosen to be arranged for the Scarsdale High School Honors Wind Ensemble because of its popularity among teenage students, as well as to welcome the new director of bands, Mr. Brian Zeller. A new band director marks a new “golden hourâ€, or chapter of life for both the students and the director, with new thrilling musical experiences to learn from.
