Lament for Youth is a beautiful Irish arrangement by J.F. Larchet, one of Ireland's most celebrated composers. The piece starts with a slow air entitled 'My Gentle Harp' followed by a lively dance tune 'The Galway Reel'. Larchet combines these two tunes with great artistry in a rousing final section. This arrangement of Larchet's orchestral piece was made by Colonel W. F. Brase, a distinguished German bandmaster who became the first Director of the Irish Army School of Music in 1923.

My teenage years were filled with many fond memories playing in youth bands enjoying music such as Incantation and Dance by John Barnes Chance and El Camino Real by Alfred Reed. Inspired by pieces such as these I composed a tango influenced dance piece. Boleo Furia won first prize in the University of Birmingham Music Society Composing Competition 2018 and has been enjoyed by the university wind band and played at the Elgar Concert Hall in Birmingham.

Robert Planquette set the poem to music when he was only 19 but sold his rights to a publisher when he was in financial distress. Because of its popularity several composers have held claim to the composition. It is a stirring military march that has found favor the world over especially with military units. Back to School 2015 This standalone movement balances chaotic, breakneck ensemble writing with placid, luscious quieter moments. Inspired by the fifth chapter of the Book of Revelation, the music vividly depicts the duality of the lion/lamb character (hence the plurality of the title), and the ample use of mixed meter and solo opportunities (particularly for flute and percussion) will offer an engaging challenge to most high school ensembles. Although this is the middle movement of a three-movement work, it works in its own self-contained world. It was this sense of duality that persuaded me to keep the s at the end of Revelation in the title – it is as if there are multiple revelations to be found within both the scripture and my musical interpretation of it. In the book of Revelation, the prophet John is sharing an apocalyptic vision to a group of churches in Asia as a means of hope – even though these people were being persecuted for their beliefs, John promises the rapture in which God will save the believers and destroy the nonbelievers. The fifth chapter begins with John’s ascension to heaven, and it concludes just before the Christ-like Lion of Judah breaks the seals of the scroll that will unleash the rapture. While this is intended to be a message of hope, it will also bring about cataclysmic death and destruction. Herein lies the duality – how can a message of hope come as the result of such a violent outcome? Movement II (of three) corresponds with only verse 6, and it is more of a character study than a programmatic narrative. It examines the Lion of Judah character, which is portrayed at first as an overwhelming and aggressive figure after it approaches from the distance in the hazy beginning section. This character is also depicted in the scripture as a lamb, though, and this is reflected in the piece’s latter half, which is a softer reimagining of the Lion character’s material. The Lion and the Lamb are not two different characters but, rather, different sides of the same character. It is this duality that drives the movement, and it explains the connections between these otherwise distinct sections. This movement was originally performed by the CCPA Wind Ensemble in April 2010 when it received first place in CCPA’s wind ensemble composition contest.

Back to School 2015 Its title says it all – Skeet Shooting with Mom’s Fiestaware imagines a dangerous excursion where a child sneaks off for some fun with Mom’s colorful dinnerware, gets caught, and has to glue everything back together. The piece’s use of mixed meter and soli writing will challenge any high school band, but its use of grooves, aleatoric notation, and bizarre techniques (including dropping a cymbal) will make it fun and accessible for everyone. Originally commissioned by the Riverside Brookfield High School concert band for their retiring director Kevin McOlgan, the only stipulation given to the composer was for it to feature McOlgan’s primary obsession: fiestaware. Stephen Cai for Concert BandProgram Notes:MUSIC As a sequel to Pigstep by Lena Raine and Exodus by Ernest Gold, I have decided to take on the challenge of arranging the ever-famous glitch hop song, Monody by Christian Buettner (known more prominently by his online alias, TheFatRat).Similarly to Pigstep, my first arrangement, I ran into the challenge of instrumentation, as Monody’s original soundtrack almost entirely consisted of electronic instruments. However, I used the same technique I did with Pigstep to overcome this problem: assign basslines to low brass, treble melodies to mid-range instruments, and high parts to upper woodwinds. Unlike Pigstep, Monody pushed me to be more creative with the percussion section, as I had to puzzle out recreating all of the numerous sound effects throughout the piece with traditional percussion instruments. I even decided to notate a conch shell line for the war horn present at the beginning and the coda! At the end, however, it all came together nicely, and I came to realize that both this song and the process of arranging it represent a journey, albeit in different contexts. The word “Monody†refers to, in a literal sense, a song sung to mourn one’s death, which accordingly fits with my view of the piece as a journey where the narrator loses their companion. Writing the introduction measures (M.22) carried me through the genuine feelings of embarking on a mythical undertaking as the original soundtrack intends to portray. The lively middle section (M.70) was enjoyable to write as well, because the music itself is upbeat and full of energy. Finally, arranging the solo section was probably my most memorable experience. The slow and subtly melancholic character of the melody (the oboe solo) very closely alludes to the narrator’s mourning, and the enchanting lyrics originally written for this section further confirms their loss:    I still hear you in the breeze,    See your shadows in the trees;    Holding on, memories never change. The chords and harmonies that the original soundtrack provided were relatively simple to transcribe, and I found joy complementing them with luscious percussion effects. This is my interpretation of Monody, and I believe that it would be best performed as a journey, one which we can relate to as it encompasses the theme of loss; a monody. ARTWORK I also took up the challenge of creating original cover artwork for Monody, and I have to say, my level of appreciation for artists of any kind has skyrocketed ever since that endeavor. It took nearly two months of watching YouTube tutorials, onerous idea crunching, and using my sister’s drawing tablet, but I had nevertheless completed it with advice from some of my more experience peers (including my sister).
