Listen to this piece hereSuite for Band took shape from two inspirations: the first, the haunting motifs of Frederic Chopin’s Etude Op. 10, No. 12, often referred to as “Revolutionary†or the “Bombardment of Warsawâ€; the second, the still-invigorating works for band of Holst, Grainger, and Vaughn-Williams. Each movement explores different aspects of Chopin’s Etude – the first in a lively dance, the second in a gentle melody, and the finale in a rush of energy that brings the work to an exciting close. Each instrument is featured at least once which makes the Suite ideal for the developing ensemble. I owe many thanks to Dr. Thomas McCauley and his bands at Montclair State University and Windhaven in 2017 for reading the work through various stages of development and for their helpful feedback.

Best playability and musical spirit - this is what characterizes the music of Bertold Hummel who died in 2002, and why his music must be part of the repertoire of any amateur and semi-professional orchestra. The Oregon Symphony occupies a special position in his oeuvre: it was written by Hummel for the typically American symphonic wind bands, requiring almost 100 musicians, including 15 clarinets in three groups of five alone, as well as four piccolos and six flutes, bass clarinet, bassoons, saxophones, trumpets, horns, tubas and the typically American sousaphone, and five percussionists. The work consists of four movements; in the rousing finale, Hummel mixes jazz motifs with popular themes and even weaves the anthem of the State of Oregon in the final music. The Variations on a theme by Haydn, now also called the St. Anthony Variations is a work in the form of a theme and variations, composed by Johannes Brahms in the summer of 1873 at Tutzing in Bavaria. It consists of a theme in B-flat major based on a “Chorale St. Antoniâ€, eight variations and a finale. It is often said to be the first independent set of variations for orchestra in the history of music. Brahms composed the work on a theme entitled “Chorale St. Antoni†found in a wind ensemble composition. At the time Brahms discovered it, the wind ensemble piece carried an attribution to the composer Joseph Haydn. Brahms titled his own composition accordingly, crediting Haydn for the theme, but publishers in the early nineteenth century often attached the names of famous composers to works by unknown or lesser known composers in order to move inventory. Subsequent research has concluded that the wind piece Brahms used as a source does not fit Haydn’s style. Symphonic Suite is a six-movement composition with a motto theme (actually a short motif) that appears in each movement and provides the basis for much of the thematic content that is developed later one.While the 2nd movement conjures up some Bartókian night music (hence the title Nocturne), its primary inspiration was the Symphony for Band of Vincent Persichetti, and the title Symphonic Suite pays homage to that work, in addition to referencing a great deal of symphonic development of the short motto motif that begins the composition. The keystone center movement is named Elegy in honor of Persichetti, who passed away in 1986, as is the dedication of the entire composition. Although this piece is cast in a different form, and does not try to imitate Persichetti's style, a couple very obvious nods to his symphony can be noticed in this suite.The six movements are: 1. Fanfare 2. Nocturne 3. Humoresque 4. Elegy 5. Intermezzo 6. Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1097591). Amory Suite is a four movement tone poem, based on Amory Park & Hall's Pond Sanctuary in Brookline, Massachusetts. The original main theme, Oaks of Amory, is introduces each movement on the piano, in the place of the listener, arriving at the next section of the park. Movement I: The Fields highlights the joggers, dog-walkers, couples on benches, and people at play, each at their own pace. Movement II: Hall's Pond celebrates the tranquil pond sanctuary, with waterfowl, owls, and turtles. Movement III: The Temple begins with a procession of small fauna: squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and a racoon. They lead to Amory Park's small, neoclassical gazebo, where they dance a minuet, and then scatter. Movement IV: The Oaks of Amory follows along the promenade of enormous oak trees that dominates the west hill of the park, leading to a grand finale.

It is melodic, thematic, and formally constructed to explore the polytonalities of Bb minor and F major. The mp3 is from its premier in 1977; for this revision in 2018 I added several melodic percussion and slightly altered the timpani part at the very end.

The 1866 extravaganza was an enormous hit, with multiple Broadway revivals and numerous productions around the United States throughout the 19th century. The only extant music from any version of The Black Crook is sheet music published in 1866: One song and four selections for piano solo by Thomas Baker, the show's musical director. This is a unique concert band arrangement of one of those piano pieces, a lively galop that has musical as well as historical interest. It's particularly appropriate for outdoor summer concerts, or as a curtain-raiser, finale, or encore for concerts at any time of the year.
