Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. I came up with this song by answering one simple question: “What do I really want to do with my music?” The answer came very quickly: “I want people to feel strong emotions of happiness when they listen to my music!” Soon after, I started composing a very simple outline of the piece.My biggest hope when you listen to this song is that it brings you much joy and happiness! I believe Optimism is a truly important view to have on life. Sometimes, you just have to look on the bright side! Unfortunately, there cannot always be happiness. If there was no sadness, you would not recognize or appreciate the happiness. There has to be opposition in order to feel anything. Without sadness and pain there would be no joy and happiness. That's why I wrote this song the way I did. In the beginning, it starts fairly happy and exciting! But then, sadness enters and even a bit of anger. It adds great contrast to the end which feels even more exciting and elated! I hope this song helps you feel optimistic, excited, and happy!

Creature began as a joke in high school between a friend of mine and me where we described the radical mood swings of our band directors as a creature coming forth from inside of them. Think about the alien from Alien 3 where it opened its mouth and its tongue was a little alien head with teeth of its own. I thought it would be fun to write a piece of music around this creature, so I wrote a short series of story beats and then some music around it. The full story is, unfortunately, lost to history, but the music survived the twenty-five years since its original composition, and in honor of my young self, I merely edited any typos and left it just as I wrote it when I was a seventeen-year-old high school senior. This was my first, solo-written, full band composition, and one can hear that I was a huge fan of Igor Stravinsky. This is not an easy piece to play. It has time changes aplenty, fast runs in the upper woodwinds, very exposed parts in nearly every section, large interval leaps, and spares hardly anyone's range. The eighth note remains constant across the 4 and 8 time signatures, and the breakdown of the complex time signatures is apparent in how the eighth notes are barred. As a conductor, it will be challenging as well, but I survived it on two occasions as both a senior in high school and in front of a military band, so it can be done. So enjoy the musical story of a creature who attacks people in its rage and hunger before it is chased and defeated by an angry mob ... but did it really die? George Willson has been an performer, composer, and conductor for thirty years in various mediums and ensembles.Mp3 provided is a midi extracted from the composition program.

Other than the Beatles, it was the first type of music that inspired me to figure out what they were playing. My favorites were Yes, ELP, and Kansas among others. The piece is marked AGGRESSIVE but intentionally does not have a tempo marking. I wrote it at 180 bpm but can be effective slightly below that but I would not attempt it much faster. This piece will greatly challenge ALL of your players. I'm sure that they, and your audience, will have an exhilarating experience performing this piece.Finally, someone is going to ask “What does ‘Metallic Khatru’ mean?†Nothing. I just liked the name.NOTE - This version requires that the score be printed with Legal size paper. In the past twenty years, Mark has been very instrumental in encouraging me to compose wind music. I am grateful for the many wind ensemble projects and recordings we have collaborated on including IMAGES, our CD that was released in October 2018. I've always been attracted to the music of great Latin composers including de Falla, Gimenez, Chapi, Piazzolla, Ginastera, Lacuona and many others. In this short suite, I used three different popular Latin dance forms. The first dance section is based on the Danzón, a Cuban dance that is slow, formal and elegant. The Danzón transitions into a Cha Cha, another Cuban dance that is a medium tempo rhythmic dance that I first experienced during my student days at Eastman when I played in local Latin bands. After a brief recap of the Danzón another transition evolves into a Malambo, an Argentine dance that is exciting, up tempo and whose roots can be traced back to the 1600s. As one might imagine, the percussion section is very busy and featured throughout from the elegant and lyrical introduction to the exciting finish. As an alumni of the EWE under Donald Hunsberger, it is an honor to have this preeminent Eastman ensemble premiere this new suite with Mark Scatterday conducting at Severance Hall in Cleveland on May 7, 2019.

While trying to search for appropriate titular words which would somehow describe the content of the piece, I kept thinking how light-hearted the musical flow of the whole composition really is. Searching through similar light minded musical content, I did not have to search for long, before I came across the divertimenti of the late 18th century (works by both Wolfgang A. & Leopold Mozart, Haydn, Stamitz, etc.). The informality and casual manner of my piece, as well as the fact that it draws its thematic material from the concept of “absolute†music - without any presupposed program - reminds me of those times, style and the presented musical form established then. After two years of off and on progress with months in between, I finally had the motivation to finish my third wind band piece, Nuclear. When first composing this piece, I imagined an apocalyptic scene, similar to that of those video games set in some kind of wasteland (hence the name, Nuclear). The piece is completely through-composed, and around the 3:30 minute mark, I decided to shift the theme from armageddon to rebuilding and hope. Here, the piece makes a sudden character change with a rather abrupt transition, which actually just results from my lack of skill in writing... Either way, the overall story that I am trying to tell, whether it be literal or philosophical, is that life will eventually return to normal, as one takes absorbed damage and attempts to heal. This is applicable especially today, as the 2020 pandemic has torn apart lives from all cultures and backgrounds. Someday, we will be celebrating the moment that we can all be together again. Please, if you like wind band repertoire, consider giving this piece a listen and find the story it can tell in your life. Thank you, and enjoy Nuclear.
