Published by Jeff Tyzik/Macaroni Music (A0.1082229). Three Latin Dances was composed for the Eastman Wind Ensemble at the request of Mark Scatterday in September of 2018. In the past twenty years, Mark has been very instrumental in encouraging me to compose wind music. I am grateful for the many wind ensemble projects and recordings we have collaborated on including IMAGES, our CD that was released in October 2018. I've always been attracted to the music of great Latin composers including de Falla, Gimenez, Chapi, Piazzolla, Ginastera, Lacuona and many others. In this short suite, I used three different popular Latin dance forms. The first dance section is based on the Danzón, a Cuban dance that is slow, formal and elegant. The Danzón transitions into a Cha Cha, another Cuban dance that is a medium tempo rhythmic dance that I first experienced during my student days at Eastman when I played in local Latin bands. After a brief recap of the Danzón another transition evolves into a Malambo, an Argentine dance that is exciting, up tempo and whose roots can be traced back to the 1600s. As one might imagine, the percussion section is very busy and featured throughout from the elegant and lyrical introduction to the exciting finish. As an alumni of the EWE under Donald Hunsberger, it is an honor to have this preeminent Eastman ensemble premiere this new suite with Mark Scatterday conducting at Severance Hall in Cleveland on May 7, 2019.

During the 2006-2007 academic year, Nash was fortunate to travel to Ghana, Spain and Vietnam. These experiences were quite profound and resulted in Nash composing new works that reflect those experiences. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE (2009) for symphonic wind ensemble is his first large ensemble composition written under this premise. Kora is a 21 stringed musical instrument from West Africa and KORA'S SONG AND DANCE is largely based on the tune Diabate’ by singer/songwriter Vieux Farke’ Toure’ of Mali. Diabate’ is also the name of well known kora musician, Toumani Diabate’ in which Toure’ dedicated the song to. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE uses melodies that are derived from the drone motif in Toure’s Diabate. Diabate’ is a medium tempo song with the drone motif occurring throughout and improvised melodies on top of the drone. KORA’S SONG AND DANCE begins with a slow introduction, featuring the alto sax and marimba. The rest of the ensemble gradually enters and builds to the end of the intro, transitioning to the next section by way of metric modulation. The next section builds with layers of instrumental textures, much like the intro and concludes with an English horn and piano duet. This particular pattern of musical events repeats, transitioning back to slow music, reminiscent of the intro and then ends big by going back to the faster tempo.

Fire Dance has 3 sections, following an A-B-A or simple ternary form: 1. Furious 2. Contemplative 3. Tempo IThe title of this composition might encourage the listener to conjure up visions of a primitive tribal fire ritual, or possibly an entertaining dance performance with fiery hoops and batons. Both are valid reactions and neither of these interpretations would expect a specific program in the music. But an environmental theme can be discerned in the composition by interpreting the opening section as depicting a “furious” wildfire, while the quiet middle section “contemplates” the scene of devastation left behind in the fire’s wake with idyllic memories of what it was like before the fire. The final section would recall the fire’s fury and serve as a warning for the future if something isn't done to combat wildfire-causing climate change.This is a concert band transcription of my original composition for violin and orchestra.

Three variations follow that are based on motivic ideas from the Ballad. On one of the shows, the celebrity guest was ballet star Doreen Wells who asked if she could dance to music of the Beatles. It fell to Wilkinson to arrange some of the hit songs for use by a ballerina. He hit on the idea of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite as a model; it was so popular that further movements were added for an EP recording and the complete Beatlecracker Suite is the result. But also art music has some famous examples, one of them is this csárdás from the comic opera Ritter Pásmán (Knight Pásmán) by Johann Strauss jr. Its premiere was on 1 January 1892 at the Vienna Court opera. The arrangement is one half tone lower than the original key of the composition for symphony orchestra and was commissioned and first time performed by Wind Philharmonic Mozarteum Salzburg conducted by Hansjoerg Angerer at their Three Kings' Concert on 6 January 2019 and broadcasted live by Austrian television. Since I was a child I've looked up at the sky and seen a world full of wonder, beauty, and mystery. The same wonder that filled my heart when I was in elementary school still takes hold when I look up now, decades later. I chose the formation of things for a specific reason. When I was a kid I had a habit of asking my parents where everything came from. It wasn't enough that a star was there, I needed to know how it got there and if possible why it was there. As I grew up I developed an immense appetite for almost all things science and history and with that came some of the answers I needed. The reality of how these things came to be was so much more interesting and astounding than my imagination that all these years later I am still captivated by the idea of an exploding star or the Big Bang. So lets take a journey, you and I. First we'll see the death of an immense star and watch as its own gravity rips it apart and forms a black hole. We'll see it feed on matter and light around it until it too finally dies. Next we'll go back 13.7 billion years and watch as tiny particles dance in and out of existence in the endless nothingness that once was. We'll see one of these tiny bits expand in an instant and give rise to everything that ever has been or will be. Watch hydrogen form and gravity pull it into the first stars. Those stars will form galaxies and we'll see glimpses of the Universe as it exists now. Finally, we will travel to the end of time, a trillion years or more into the future. There we will witness the dissipation of the galaxies, the death of stars, and the final moments as even tiny electrons are pulled apart into the nothing from which we all came. Parts of this piece are violent, but we will see that at the end of time, the formation of nothing is just as beautiful as the formation of a star. Everything has its time and everything ends. He was part of the Patuxet tribe, and taught settlers how to satisfy basic needs. And as far as the eye can see, there is no band music dedicated for him. So I have made a piece showing what may have happened when the settlers came. While not completly accurate, It is a great representation (and honor to Squanto) for your next concert!. The piece begins on a nice warm day, in a playful, dancelike movement, this quickly turns to anger as they see a bird that is not able to be hunted. This confusion leads to the mysteriousness that was most likely happening upon the natives. They start to pray to their gods. All of a sudden, the ship lands and a war breaks out! But Squanto wants to embrace this new culture they have brought, which slowly calms the fighting down. Eventually, the English Culture (represented by Hot Cross Buns) is embraced in the polytonal ways (disagreement). The final part is a chorale representing peace.Errata:Â 107: Singing is stopped.

Published by TigerSong LLC (A0.1097591). Amory Suite is a four movement tone poem, based on Amory Park & Hall's Pond Sanctuary in Brookline, Massachusetts. The original main theme, Oaks of Amory, is introduces each movement on the piano, in the place of the listener, arriving at the next section of the park. Movement I: The Fields highlights the joggers, dog-walkers, couples on benches, and people at play, each at their own pace. Movement II: Hall's Pond celebrates the tranquil pond sanctuary, with waterfowl, owls, and turtles. Movement III: The Temple begins with a procession of small fauna: squirrels, chipmunks, rabbits, and a racoon. They lead to Amory Park's small, neoclassical gazebo, where they dance a minuet, and then scatter. Movement IV: The Oaks of Amory follows along the promenade of enormous oak trees that dominates the west hill of the park, leading to a grand finale.
