The work is about a king, who whilst travelling, through a forest, came across a local girl, Domenicka. They fall in love and get married. The king goes to battle, whilst away, the identical step-sister murders Domeicka. The king finds out about this, via a golden spinning wheel, who brings the girl back to life. Then king hears about what's happened, he punishes the sister and mother, and throws them to the wolves and lives happily ever after.

For Concert Band 12mThe anthropologists say that Cro-Magnon men lived in caves and used some basic tools, such as hooks and needles. They cooked, made clothes, and buried the dead. Some say they made art, painting on the walls of the caves. They were the first to question things. I imagine that, with curiosity, they invented faith. They cooked faith with fear to invent courage. I made this piece in 2011 when I started researching new languages ​​for my writing. The previous piece, Eli, Eli, sought to represent a current men walking on their faith, searching for it. Magnon seeks to represent an older man, seeking to give reason to his own fear. The style of musical writing is different from my other works. There are three distinct pieces within this piece, almost like movements, unified by a structure of relationships between notes and use of motifs, although these rarely occur in the same way. The melodies are divided and their pieces are thrown for as multiple possibilities of the timbres. Above technical considerations, there is a constant sense of instability more or less pronounced. Louise Farrenc (1804-1875) was the only woman to hold a professorship at a European Conservatory (Paris) in the 19th Century.  They would only allow her to teach piano, not composition, because she was undeniably a virtuoso pianist.  During her lifetime she mainly composed for piano, but also wrote works for the orchestra, including three symphonies, and a great deal of mixed chamber music. She wrote no works for wind band of any kind, yet she lived in a golden age of especially French band music. As such, I felt a new generation of music students should hear the music of this incredibly talented composer who had the misfortunate of being born female in the 19th Century. This work is certainly characteristic of the Romantic Era and would make a lovely concert overture. the main sub ject of her variations is Martin Luther's A Mighty Fortress is Our God. If you purchase this score (and like it), please write to me at debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc and I will send you a copy of the wav file as well as a link to her original piano work (I;'ve not taken too many liberties). If you still like it, parts may be had for $100 via Venmo or personal check. Write to debbaut@gmail.com, subject Farrenc..

Emmanuel Chabrier (1841-1894) wrote this as a piece for piano (4-hands) in the 1880s after attending a performance of Tristan and Isolde in Munich. Chabrier had been moved to tears by Richard Wagner's romantic music drama, but when Chabrier returned home to Paris, he wrote this burlesque, a pastiche of the various themes from the opera. It was a curious thing to do, because instead of writing a tribute to Wagner's masterpiece, it was as if he instead squirted Wagner in the face with a seltzer bottle. Wagner's champion, Hans von Bülow, became enraged when he heard Chabrier perform the parody, but Wikipedia reports that Francis Poulenc described Souvenirs de Munich as irresistibly funny, where Wagner's principal themes appear with false beards and fake moustaches.This arrangement for wind band is greatly simplified from the original piano piece to make it more playable. Still, bands will find it a challenge, although instrumentalists and audiences both are certain to enjoy this clever novelty from La Belle �poque.

Â This piece opens with a bold brass fanfare introduction, then it has a 16 bar excerpt from a famous Fred Jewell march. Â Franklin has a long history of community bands and a Jewell march would have been a characteristic sound over the past 100 years. Â And furthermore there is a direct link to this town since in 1927 Fred Jewell was appointed Director of the Masonic Home Band in Franklin, (and Jewell also happens to be a cousin of this composer!) Â The middle Chorale section of this composition has woven in 11 very short quotes from known songs that will remind listeners of Franklin institutions or values and virtues that helped build the town. Â The final section is pure celebration in the form of a Caribbean calypso. The inspiration, and title, of this work is derived from the mythical phoenix. The phoenix is a bird with colourful plumage and a golden tail. There are many variants on the colours depending on the legend, which include scarlet, purple, blue, and green. According to the legends, the phoenix's cry is a beautiful song. The legends also tell how the phoenix builds itself a nest towards the end of its life. At the end of its life cycle, the phoenix and its nest burn away until both are reduced to ashes. From the ashes, the phoenix is reborn.
