The composer writes : This work was premièred on April 27, 2003 at the Eglise Saint-Roch in Paris with the prestigious Orchestre de la Musique de L’Armée de L’Air, under the direction of my friend and colleague, Claude Picheraureau. I have always been fascinated by the beauty of the Cosmos, which has inspired many of my works. Feelings of infinite movement can be expressed musically and it seemed to me that one of the ways to do this was to end this work on a repeated phrase played in a long perdendosi, to give the impression that one is hearing the echoes of the finished phrase as the instruments stop playing. I had just started to write this work when I received a note for the Paris Observatory which gave me the news that the astronomical community had decided to name a newly discovered asteroid for Jean-Pierre Luminet. When I wrote to Jean-Pierre to congratulate him on this honour, reminding him with the Petit Prince that not everyone has their own star, I asked him if he would accept that I name this work for concert band with the full name of his asteroid: 5523 Luminet 1991 PH8. Jean-Pierre accepted my proposition by return letter : ..., not only do I not have any objection, but I would be very honoured. To be in the celestial spheres in the form of a rock and also in the form of music, what more could one ask for? Note in particular that material Saint-Saëns assigned to the cor anglais has been reallocated.Most of the scherzo has been cut. The closing bars that remain serve as a brief, sweet introduction before the organ comes crashing in.Metronome marks have been adjusted, and are based on the 1957 recording by Paul Paray and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra. Recordings vary considerably with regard to tempo, and directors are encouraged to listen widely and experiment.Editorial amendments include modern percussion notation, shorthand piano parts for ease of study, ample cue notes, and well-padded page turns whenever possible.Musically, kindly indulge an added final crescendo in the timpani part, as lifted from Edo de Waart's riveting 1984 recording with the San Francisco Symphony.With acknowledgement and thanks to the teams behind IMSLP, MuseScore and GNU LilyPond.

The Nutcracker Suite is an interpretation of the music from Tchaikovsky's 1892 ballet by American pianist, composer and bandleader Duke Ellington and his long-time collaborator and orchestrator, Billy Strayhorn. Recorded for Columbia Records in 1960, it features jazz interpretations of nine movements from the original work in various styles and in a slightly different order, including more exotic instruments than would normally be found in the jazz ensemble:Overture Toot Toot Tootie Toot (Dance of the Reed-Pipes)Peanut Brittle Brigade (March)Sugar Rum Cherry (Dance of the Sugar-Plum Fairy)Entr'acteVolga Vouty (Russian Dance)Chinoiserie (Chinese Dance)Dance of the Floreadores (Waltz of the Flowers)Arabesque Cookie (Arabian Dance)Now fully arranged for concert band, without piano (as Ellington didn't actually play very much on the original recording) this is a difficult work, but players and audiences will love it - starring roles are given to most of the band at various points and the original solos played by the Ellington orchestra have been included for authenticity but chords added as well, should your players wish to make their own music. The Oboe part doubles Cor Anglais in a few movements, but this is cued if not available and important moments are also sensitively cross-cued throughout should the ensemble not be complete - absolutely essential, however, are the drums and bass, who are ever-present throughout and provide the beating heart of the work. Ryuichi Sakamoto (å‚本 é¾) (1952-2023) was a Japanese composer, pianist, record producer, and actor who pursued a diverse range of styles as a solo artist and as a member of Yellow Magic Orchestra (YMO). With his bandmates Haruomi Hosono and Yukihiro Takahashi, Sakamoto influenced and pioneered a number of electronic music genres. As a film score composer, Sakamoto won an Oscar, a BAFTA, a Grammy, and two Golden Globe Awards. 'Merry Christmas, Mr. Lawrence' (1983) marked his debut as both an actor and a film-score composer and his most successful work was 'The Last Emperor' (1987). 'Blu' (ブルー) was composed for an advert to mark the 50th anniversary of the Japanese clothing brand Aoyama Shouji and the title could be a reference to the colour of their business suits; the structure, after a quiet opening, is very reminiscent of Ravel's 'Bolero' and accompanies visuals of workers going about their day, gradually ending with a bit of a night out at the end before slumping into bed. There are some lovely moments for alto flute, cor anglais and tuned percussion; 'Blu' would be a great companion to a performance alongside 'Bolero' or other dance pieces.

John Ireland studied piano with Frederick Cliffe and composition with Charles Villers Stanford at the Royal College of Music in London, where he himself taught between 1923 and 1939, his pupils including Benjamin Britten. He worked as organist and choirmaster at St Luke's Chelsea between 1904 and 1926, while developing his career as a composer. Ireland retired in 1953, settling in the hamlet of Rock in Sussex, where he lived in a converted windmill for the rest of his life. It was there he met the young pianist Alan Rowlands who would be Ireland's choice to record his complete piano music.He died of heart failure aged 82 at Rock Mill in Washington, Sussex, and is buried at St. Mary the Virgin in Shipley, near his home. His epitaph reads Many waters cannot quench love and One of God's noblest works lies here. His organ music belongs largely to the early years of his composing career (1902-1911), however, the 'Meditation' on John Keble's Rogationtide Hymn was written in 1958, and was his very last composition. Arranged for concert band, including parts for string bass and contrabass woodwind, as well as attractive moments for Cor Anglais.

Fast Car is a song by American singer-songwriter Tracy Chapman, released on 6 April 1988 as the lead single from her self-titled debut studio album. Chapman's appearance on the Nelson Mandela 70th Birthday Tribute helped the song become a top-ten hit in the United States, reaching number six on the Billboard Hot 100. In the United Kingdom, it reached number five on the UK Singles Chart in 1988. The song went on to receive three Grammy Award nominations: Record of the Year, Song of the Year, and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance, the latter of which it won. It also received an MTV Video Music Award nomination for Best Female Video in 1989. In 2006, Enya started work on a Christmas album of traditional carols and original tracks, but the idea was changed to a collection of songs with a Christmas or winter theme as it better suited the style of the new material. It was recorded with her long-time collaborators, arranger and producer Nicky Ryan and his wife, lyricist Roma Ryan. Journey of the Angels is from this album, 'And Winter Came...' and was written in the style of what Enya described as a slow traditional carol; she chose it as a personal highlight. The song is dedicated to the American director and editor Tim Royes, who produced the music videos for Enya's songs Amarantine and It's in the Rain and died in 2007. This arrangement for concert band is part of an ongoing project to bring more music by women composers into the worldwide repertoire and features prominent parts for Cor Anglais (cued if not available) and tubular bells (chimes) to really bring out the wintery atmosphere. The lyrics were written in collaboration with Lori Lieberman after she was inspired by a Don McLean performance in late 1971. Denied writing credit by Fox and Gimbel, Lieberman released her version of the song in 1972, but it did not chart. In 1973, it became a number-one hit in the United States, Australia and Canada for Roberta Flack, and also reached number six on the UK Singles Chart. In 1996, Fugees recorded the song with Lauryn Hill on lead vocals. Their version became a number-one hit in twenty countries and since then, the song has often been performed by Flack and Fugees together on stage. This version for concert band features cor anglais on the opening melody but plenty of opportunities for expressive playing throughout the band.

'TRON' is a 1982 American science fiction action adventure film starring Jeff Bridges as a computer programmer and video game developer who is transported inside the software world of a mainframe computer where he interacts with programs in his attempt to escape. The soundtrack album was composed by Wendy Carlos with two additional tracks performed by the band Journey. Carlos came to prominence with 'Switched-On Bach' (1968), an album of music by Johann Sebastian Bach performed on a Moog synthesizer, which helped popularize its use in the 1970s and won her three Grammy Awards; the combination of synthesiser and live musicians (provided by the London Philharmonic Orchestra) for TRON can be seen as a benchmark for later scores using this innovative approach, although Carlos was initially not happy with the result after the film was released. This lovely theme is heard throughout the film and has been arranged for concert band (with additional part for Cor Anglais, where available) to expand the worldwide repertoire of music by women composers as part of an ongoing project. #ArrangeMeGoals2023.

For full Wind Band including many of the optional instruments that are often left out (Cor Anglais, Eb Clarinet and Soprano Saxophone), this arrangement features each section of the band on the tune, and really captures the original EWF groove. Jazz articulations and an ability to play the nuances in the tune are important here, so really dig into your bands groovy side to bring out the funk. Pay careful attention to note lengths, especially in the bass line and let your drummer drive the rhythms.
