The music is consistently melodic, with harmonies that are modal and consonant. The piece begins with a simple, folk-like theme, played by the solo flute, alone. The theme is then repeated in the full band, with a chord progression that is not as simple as the tune seems to imply. The piece continues with several variations on that chord progression. Some variations feature the soloist, some feature specific sections of the band, and some use all the resources of the full band. Some variations are brisk and playful; some are quiet and tranquil; some are expansive and forceful. In the final variation, the full band builds toward a climax, and then, just before the final chord, stops abruptly. After a moment of silence, the solo flute, again playing alone, reprises the theme, and a quiet two-bar coda in the woodwinds and horns ends the piece.

The theme and variations suggest life's varied paths. Similarly,throughout the piece the different harmonies of the main theme's phrase endings remind us of our wide-rangingchoices as we grow. The piece is meant tobe performed with full concert band. However, the arrangement's flexible scoring provides the most performingopportunities for smaller ensembles of all sizes and configurations, as long as all four voices are included.Furthermore, the arrangement's solo and soli passages provide varied sound textures in the context of thisflexible scoring. The piece's ample yet judiciously placed cues allow instrument combinations other than thosewritten. I was exposed to some beautiful melodies from the weekly Masses, including one I particularly remembered, but which was under copyright. So I decided to create a similar modal line and open the composition as if it were being sung in a church. I play the French horn which is why I chose that voice to express the theme. The variations which followed were to begin as historically simple, but move toward a more contemporary sound. I have always loved the percussive sound of Vaclav Nelhybell's music and that is what I intended for the ending.

First, see if your students can figure out the title before the composition is played.The Theme (Three blind Mice) is introduced in Eb Major, common time, as a cannon in three parts. The first variation is in 3/4 time in Dm, followed by variation #2 in DM, in an easy Jazz style, back in common time. The 3rd variation, also in D Major, is a Viennese waltz in 3/4. Variation #4, comes back in Eb Major, common time, as a chorale with a typical classical Coda. Best of all, every woodwind and brass player has a chance at the melody, and parts are doubled to sound full with even the smallest bands.
