Published by HMS Music (A0.1435814). ___________________________With a nice minor mode sound and a propelling timpani line, TIDINGS OF JOY opens with God Rest Ye, Merry, harmonized in drone fashion, then features a soli middle section of Pat-a-Pan for which you audition the players who get to play this more difficult middle section (keeps your best players challenged!) while the rest of the band vocalize a single pitch on ahh. The piece then recaps with God Rest You Merry with a slightly fuller instrumentation and a simple flute obligato line.FEATURES: Melody opportunities for all wind parts; Multiple percussion parts give colorful sound; timpani provide bass ostinato; Students sing ahh on a single note - great for improving intonation!; Soli section in middle will motivate players to learn the part so they get to play the melody (keeps your better players challenged); Low brass parts are very simple.RANGES: C minor (3 flats). Published by Stephen Davies (A0.891956).   CLARINET CONCERT CONCERTINO FOR WIND BAND I don’t normally enter long descriptions of my arrangements, nothing worse than seeing that little sign on the bottom right saying ‘see more’, however this piece has a rather interesting story that I’d like to share with you! It was maybe 8 or 9 years ago that I helped in the library of the Band Of The Guards Association, a group of musicians who were all members of the Household Division Bandsin London, that is to say the Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Irish, Welsh, Life Guards and Blues & Royals bands, chiefly known the world over for Changing The Guard at Buckingham Palace and many other ceremonial occasions. The Band Of The Guards Association were privileged to rehearse at the Royal Hospital Chelsea, home of the famous Chelsea Pensioners, renowned for their Redcoats and medals as veterans of the British Army. Our library of music for the band at the time was held in an air raid shelter deep in the cellars underneath the labyrinthine corridors of the old building built by Sir Christopher Wren back in the 1680’s. When I say ‘air raid shelter’, that is exactly what it was like! Can’t go into too much detail, but suffice it to say that it was like being transported back in time! But this is where the library was kept, complete with dusty shelves, blackout warnings, obsolete bulb replacements and tunnels to the Thames! The man in charge of the library was Mr.Gordon ‘Joe’ Stafford, former Solo Clarinet with HM Band Of The Welsh Guards (ret’d), a fine player of that instrument in his day, and revered as such even now. About 8 years ago, our ‘underground ‘ library was deemed a fire hazard, and we were ‘invited’ to move it elsewhere. As we had our practice room nearby in the Chelsea Hospital, we decided to relocate the whole library there, shelving being built and constructed by enthusiastic band members. Joe Stafford and myself were not particularly enthusiastic about this, but it had to be done. Having looked at the enormous amount of music to be moved, we thought about ditching some of the scores which would never be played again, for instance selections of musicals long forgotten, scores with multiple missing parts etc. Lots of that music went to local music organisations simply for sight reading purposes, and the more complete versions went to bands and orchestras to bolster their stock of scores. After the laborious sorting out in the air raid shelter, Joe and I had the unenviable task of discarding the scores and parts that were incomplete, defaced, or just basically useless. It was an arbitrary case of ‘keep or throw’, and at the time we were doing this, Joe was desperate for a pint in the bar! I agreed, and was anyway on my last batch of throwaways when I found a piece titled ‘Clarinet Concerto’, by A.E.Williams. Written in pencil, with ancient sellotape, and signed by all the people who played it many years ago, including the Soloist and composer, I thought that that should not be binned, so I kept it! Joe Stafford suggested that I should ‘get it out there’ , so I have. Incidentally it has a cracking Cadenza towards the end, it was a bit smudged in the original score, but I’ve filled in the gaps!! This would be an ideal addition to the band repertoire for Clarinet!

Flute, Oboe, Bells 2. clarinet (trumpet double) no playing across the break 3. Alto Sax 4. Tenor Sax (horn double) 5. Trumpet (clarinet double) 6. Horn (tenor sax double) 7. Trombone, baritone, bassoon (bass clarinet and bari sax double) 8. Tuba 9. Percussion (snare and bass drum) I include a bass clarinet/baritone TC part and a bari sax part. Measures are numbered in both score and parts. This arrangement ends with a fun waltz, I keep the horns low to work on accuracy and a big sound instead of doubling the alto part. After the assembly, I was also asked, What, no Air Force Song?I tried a version of Military Jamboree with the Air Force Song, but because of the meter, 6/8, I found it tobe a lot more difficult for my students. They could play everything else, except the 6/8 rhythms. So, the musicteacher in me made the difficult decision to remove the United States Air Force Song from the finalarrangement, and thus, making it more playable for a developing band.

Medioevo is a Composition based on impressions from the dark ages. The composer wrote the piece to take you on a journey through this remarkable period of time.Part 1: The Promised Beginning Land Of Departurethe part opens with a decisive rhythm in the lower brass, woodwind and percussion section. The theme played by the woodwinds is written to give the listeners a middle eastern feeling. This represents the crusades. The higher brass section play a nice and static counter theme.Part 2: Enchanted DominionThis section a bit mysterious and magic, played by mallets and flutes. The theme from the Oboe represents the ghost of a warlock trapped on the dominion. As we pas trough the dominion we need the protection of the church represented by the Harpsichord (clavecimbel) and clarinets.Part 3: The rustling ForestsAfter leaving the Enchanted Dominion we gallop with our horse trough the Rustling Forests. These forest show fast winds and have a lyric theme played by the trumpets and saxesPart 4: The SquareOnce trough the Forests we get to the Village square where the market is on going. We have several sales men selling their goods. These are represented in the themes of the woodwinds. The confusion gets to much and we try to hide from the sales men. The trumpets represent this part in a piano 5/4 movement which bring a big contrast trough the noises from the market place. In the end we need to get through the market place so we find a way to keep the sales men away by playing a wonderful legato melody which the dwarf’s taught us.Part 5: Dwarf’sThese social and kind people have a little village outside of the town where joyful melodies sound from both children as adults and elderly dwarf’s. the themes are divided under the different solo players of the woodwind sections.Part 6: Run or HideAfter a nice time with the Dwarf’s we continue our path but soon we face a large army coming our way. What do we do Run or Hide? This part is full of different melodies and counter melodies to represent the indecisiveness of the Dark Ages.Part 7: NeverlandWe arrive in the land of the elves where the tenor sax and horns play an agitato atmosphere to represent our hart beat when we see these beautiful creatures. The themes from the flutes and euphoniums show the grace and beauty of the elves. While the harp creates an elf like atmosphere.Part 8 The castle Gardenswe arrive in the castle gardens. These gardens are the most beautiful in the whole land. It makes the orchestra say Ahh. While the percussion section gives it a magical feeling. After being amassed we soon find out that these gardens are made for the Authorities and paid by our tax money which gives us a double feeling. Should this money not be better spend on good music?Part 9 Black Powderafter we find out the castle lord wrongly used or tax money we go and find some black powder to blow him up. After being hunted down by the castle lord trying to get some black powder. We find ourselves in the glorious fight.Part 10: Rageour glorious fight with the castle lord continues into an enormous climax where we are stroke down and ends up with a one way ticket to the graveyard.Part 11: The GraveyardThe whole orchestra sings a spiritual song to guide us into the afterlives. An angle comes to collect our soul (represented by the piccolo flute). And slowly or name is forgotten.

On one of the shows, the celebrity guest was ballet star Doreen Wells who asked if she could dance to music of the Beatles. It fell to Wilkinson to arrange some of the hit songs for use by a ballerina. He hit on the idea of Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker Suite as a model; it was so popular that further movements were added for an EP recording and the complete Beatlecracker Suite is the result. A percussive opening sets the rhythm of the clouds as they sail by the moon, and then the low woodwinds pipe out a baseline for nature. A clarinet sings of the howling wind through the trees, and then the other woodwinds whistle like birds. As the jubilant sounds of night rise, a trumpet calls again the clarinet theme. The piece slows down dramatically, accelerates, and stops suddenly at an impressive climax. A duet between the Bb clarinet and bass clarinet end the piece, as the echoes of night roll across the landscape.

This Christmas carol has had a number of different versions, starting out in the 18th Century as a French carol, Quelle Est Cette Odeur Agreable?. It has been translated into English as What Is This Fragrance? Other lyrics were written for the same tune, such as Thou Who Wast Rich Beyond All Splendor by Frank Houghton in 1934, based on 2 Corinthians 8:9: For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that you through His poverty might become rich. In 1997, Houghton's wife Dorothy modernized his lyrics as Lord, You Were Rich Beyond All Splendor for the Haven of Rest Quartet to record with the title For Love's Sake. It has also been recorded by Marilyn Baker in the UK and Keith & Kristyn Getty in the UK & Ireland. This is a flexible band/choral arrangement which, in its demo configuration here, is presented by a keyboard and a double quartet of wind instruments with a string bass.The performance time is approximately 3:30.

In commemoration of this historic event, and because of the greatness of his music, I composed A Beethoven Celebration for concert band. Included is music from five different pieces: Symphony #3 (The Eroica); Piano Sonata #8 (The Pathetique); Symphony #5; March for Military Music in F; and Symphony #9 (Ode to Joy). Optional parts for harp (or piano) and soprano saxophone (substitute for oboe) are included.
