Bet you never knew the sound of a train whistle was actually a Diminished 7th Chord! Well, it is, as your band will demonstrate clearly when they play the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo! Watch the eyebrows in your audience go up as they, too, realize the musical nature of that train! After four progressively louder and longer blasts from the Chugga Chugga Choo Choo, the band settles into a jaunty melody, replete with your percussion section providing that rhythmic clackety-clack that put so many cross country passengers to sleep in the heyday of train travel. An ascending scale pushes the train to the top of a hill, and a descending scale brings everyone back down to the plains. Finally, the destination is in sight. As the train slows gradually to a stop at the station, your band members vocalize Chugga Chugga Choo Choo Woo Woo in unison, and everyone can disembark. Scored for Elementary Band, be sure to prep your concert-goers with a hearty, All Aboard, when introducing this piece! .

Simple harmonization, limited ranges, and basic rhythms ensure success and enjoyment for both the musicians and the audience.The work creates a musical picture of a slow-moving camel caravan crossing a desert. This is a work you will continue to use for years to come. And with the license to copy all the parts you ever need, you can let the students keep their parts as souvenirs and just print new ones the next time!LEVEL: Appropriate for 2nd-/3rd-year players or advanced beginners. (BcP-YB) PROGRAMMING:Winter/Christmas concertModerately slow tempo provides nice contrast with faster works. These percussion parts are simple, using only quarter-, half-, and dotted-half notes (slow eighth-notes in the Tambourine), and provide the rhythmic ostinato upon which the work progresses. The parts can easily be divided to provide playing opportunities for up to 8 percussionists. Transport your audience back to the “Old West†as you cross the nation by covered wagon to join the California Gold Rush, move a herd of cattle over the plains to new grasing lands, and be a part of the adventure of early rail commerce.Price discounted on my website “Sweet Betsy from Pike†is a comic folk ballad chronicling the trials and successes of Betsy, a mid-19th century pioneer woman, as she migrates from (perhaps) Pike County, Missouri (or Illinois) to the California Gold Rush town of Placerville (known colloquially as ‘Hangtown’). The journey across the Wild West was full of hardship, peril, and loss This song battles the very real struggles with levity and humor. It was first published in 1858.“Git Along, Little Dogies†is a cowboy ballad, also known as “Whoopie Ti Yi Yoâ€. While likely older, the first mention of the song was in author Owen Wister’s 1893 journal. It was first published in 1910. “Dogies†is a reference to small or orphaned calves. The narrative of the song quotes a cowboy singing to the slow or stray dogies as they move along the cattle drive to Wyoming.“Rock Island Line†refers the Rock Island and La Salle Railroad company (established 1947) which soon after became the Chicago and Rock Island Railroad. When construction of the railroad arrived at Rock Island in 1854, it became the first to connect Chicago with the Mississippi River. This folk song references an encounter between an operator of a toll gate and a train engineer who is let through without paying by lying about his payload. Once safely through, he yells back his confession as the train speeds onward. The earliest known version of the song was published in 1929.Grade 3.5 Performance time: 10:00.
